Men At Work just played here a month or two ago at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. I saw their ad in the paper, but I heard that only 3 of the original members were performing. :-( I hemmed and hawwed and decided to skip it... I certainly wish I was at that one-time reunion show. They were one of my first favorite groups when I entered the world of rock. :) - -Phil ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Apr 1998 14:38:29 EDT From: DAbbitt32 Subject: Re: Alloy: Men at Work In a message dated 98-04-16 02:22:36 EDT, Phil said: << Men At Work just played here a month or two ago at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. Actually, the a buddy of mine, who was a campus promoter at the time gave me a list of who was on tour, and asked me who was good ... when I saw Hay's name on the list, I was ecstatic. It was a great little show... It was just Colin, and his acoustic guitar. There wasn't a big turnout, but it had a very homey sort of intimate atmosphere... he mostly concentrated on Topanga, but with a little encouragement in the form of shouted requests, from my friends and I, he played some of Wayfaring sons. Hearing Mr. Hay play Wayfaring Sons and Don't Drink the Water, in person, acoustically, is one of the high points of my musical life. After the show, I met Mr. Hay... Unfortunately, I was so completely inebriated by that time that he was in no great rush to make my acquaintance. The Teletubby debate has raged in the UK for months now, and the consensus seems to be that they are harmless and should be embraced at every opportunity. Just don't start saying 'Ay Oh' when you meet people, that's all. Was that a link from the Headspace page or something else? I'd like to get a band I know on it. Some of the folks here already know which one that is. It's the Georgian Festival Orchestra's rendition of Gustav Holst's "The Planets." The problem was not with the composition, which is one of my favorites, but with the performance. At the end of the "Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity" section, where there is this great majestic trumpet fanfare, one of the lead trumpet players quite audibly misses a note. I mean, COMPLETELY blows it. The end of the piece sounds like this: DA! (blatt!) DAAA da-DAAA... DAAA (With apologies to everyone who doesn't read e-mail in a monospaced font.) Even though I bought another version of "The Planets" as soon as I could, I still cringe every time the "Jupiter" section nears the end. I guess the life lesson here is: never buy a cheap classical CD that does not even show the name of the orchestra on the front cover. You know, the way Thomas responded to you at the reception after the lecture I can quite understand how any Beatnik content might've been driven right out of your mind. I didn't get a kiss (or a hug ), but I do remember the website. It is: http://www.headspace.com/beatnik/showcase/gallery/index.html "The Beatnik Gallery is the place to hear what composers across the Net are doing with RMF and Beatnik. Hear a wide variety of musical styles from an international group of composers, and SUBMIT YOUR OWN FILES!" You go girl! Nice to hear from you. Affectionately, Stephen P.S.
