The track you refer to is called "Born Slippy" by Underground. It got it's original boost from being on the soundtrack for the film "Trainspotting", but they played it to death in the clubs over here, and now I'm a wee bit tired of it. Pretty much everything they make sounds identical,...the only other track by them that I like, much more than this incidentally, is a track called "Pearl" that's on another soundtrack,.. this time from the film "The Saint". And I have to say I feel the same way about Kylie's new music,...even though I don't fancy her :-) So tell me, John, howz life in Taz these days? I still haven't caught up with all the mail I should send to people, but I will,...the irony of the situation is that I'm enjoying the new job so much that I don't have so much time to send e-mails,...sods law, really!I still have so say though, that at the old job, when things were about as bad as they could get, reading the alloy mail really cheered me up. So I shall remain at the end of the bar, quietly sipping boddys, chipping in once in a while, throwing peanuts occasionally at customers, throwing jealous glances at the lovely Robin's flirtatious antics over the bar, and wishfully hoping that some guy with a black belt in Bun-Fu will slaunter over to have a chat,..(sigh),.... But I do respect the opinion of the very beautiful & very talented Louise, who I've missed seeing on this list (I'm glad you're new job is going so well! Any more close encounters with the local fauna?) In a road documentary I saw a couple of days ago, Mr Cave reads a review out loud to a bandmate seconds before going on stage.. which those who dislike him may appreciate. I just wanted to say that the reason that people attack the Spice Girls so much is that they do go around trying to have credibility and represent Modern Woman, which I'd take as a mortal insult. Equally talentless cretins such as the BStreet B*ys, while being equally execrable, at least do not have the bile to try and actively portray themselves as meaningful cultureless icons. Also, on the subject of their voices, you really don't need to be so equivocal - you have the necessary qualifications, where singing is concerned, to say "If I don't like it, it's no good!" Very > smoky. > > Perhaps the gifted Melissa, our rezident Russophile, has something to add...? No one I ever met in Russia had heard of Russian Caravan tea! I found that quite amusing. I was a student in Krasnodar, down in the deep Russian south (and the residents have the accents to prove it) near the Black Sea. The tea produced there (Krasnodarskiy chai) is remarkably tasty - and very hard to find out of town. There used to be a store in Moscow called "Kuban'" (the river that flows through Krasnodar) where this tea was sold in tins, complete with dried lemon rind mixed in. Can't find any of it anymore. Krasnodar is dotted with tea houses where people come for an afternoon of tea-tasting. Each table has a samovar bubbling away, ready to mix boiling water with the pots of concentrated tea that is prepared in advance. Really great stuff. I recommend black Georgian tea (Gruzinskiy chai) for its strong, somewhat earthy flavor, and green Uzbek tea for its wonderful mellowing effect (my blood pressure always sinks when I go to Uzbekistan.) The funny thing is that most Muscovites prefer now to buy English tea (by the bag yet!) from street vendors. The markets are drying up for the lovely local products - very sad! I miss the tea culture down in Krasnodar. Then again, I miss sampling funky stuff at Twinings' London shop (right across the street from the London School of Economics.) I'm feeling inspired. I'm off to the kitchen to fix some wild, almost scary-looking stuff that a colleague brought back from China recently. (I have a funny feeling this stuff probably shouldn't have made it through the USDA inspection point at Dulles Airport...) Oh, hey -- I got a screamin' deal on a trip to Thailand in May -- $790 r/t to Bangkok and 6 nights in a pretty nice hotel. I think I'm travelling via San Francisco, and, if so, maybe I'll have enough time to see some of the Alloy folks for one brief shining moment! Cheers, Melissa - -- Melissa R. To Lissu (nice try), t'other John and the_copse - and anyone else I miss in the mail cross-over, thanks for the lager info. I'll rush out today and buy it ! (only the single I think). I had an idea it was on the 'Trainspotting' soundtrack. Thanks to Miles for the insight into the origins of Russian Caravan tea (actually quite interesting) and Melissa for the insight into teas great and small !. It does sound very sad to be losing so much tea culture from Russia. Oh, and let us know what that 'scary-looking stuff' was like. Lissu, Tassie is great at the moment - El Nino has been kind to us and given us an exceptional summer. We are still experiencing warm weather (saturday is forecast for a nice 30 C - very unusual for mid/late March). The down side is the dry conditions (also unusual for Tassie). Because of the height of the property where I live we rely on tank water so I've had to cart water on a regular basis over the past few months. Anyway, back to work.
