But thinking forward I do really worry about how we're going to bring kids up in the future, especially with me working in a filthy capitalist industry and without the same religious background my parents have. Fortunately Nadia has a little more moral substance than I. I really learned all my music from church, which even today is still the most thorough grounding in the basics you can get. It gives you a real appreciation of strong tunes and logical harmony. Of course I'm not suggesting in my comments that we should restrict what they listen to, and I'm sure that ours will turn out ok, but sometimes (grumpy old codger's hat on) you wonder what future there is left for pop music. I'm not that depressed about it at the moment, as the other day I wrote a huge new song to lead off the next album, and it rocks! the_copse ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Mar 1998 07:31:38 EST From: RThurF Subject: Alloy: Dreams of Slarvi I just woke up from a dream about Slarv & his family. Anyone famous ? Me, in 1980 I was singer / occasional guitarist in a garage band called the XM-18's. (Lousy name, lousy band). We mostly did cover versions, including Hawkwinds' Masters of the Universe & Brainstorm (the guitarist once had herbal tea with Nik Turner), Motorheads' Stone Dead Forever and a memorable version of Crass' "Shaved Women". I left & went to Sheffield Poly. Needless to say we never did any gigs, but they did a couple after I left. At Poly, I was in a twopiece with a failed poet called John; we took our influences from Lou Reed & were called "All Tomorrows' Parties". We did a couple of gigs before John left & went home to Grimsby. He wrote some bloody good lyrics, mind. I played guitar (badly). Now my stage appearances are limited to drunken Karaoke appearences (belting out "Keep Your Hands to Yourself" in front of 500 bewildered French people in a restaurant in the Sixteenth once), and encouraging my soccer teams ("If I Had the Wings of a Sparrow" at Boston Utd). Basically I am the musical equivalent of Worksop Town FC... they'll never win the FA Cup & I'll never get to number one. Mind you, if a gang of Tesco shelf stackers (a.k.a. the S.G.) can get to the success they have, there's hope for us all yet. Anyone famous ? >> Well, I've been a bit quiet lately, keeping my nose to the grindstone except for trips to see other Alloy members :-), or else you wouldn't have gotten this impression. I'm one of several scientists, former scientists, and almost-scientists in the group. I guess I'm in that last category, since I'm finishing up my Ph.D. (hope to defend that puppy in about six weeks or so). Engineering psychology is my area, which is the branch of experimental psychology that looks at how people learn skills and do tasks, including issues of motor control and perception. So, where do I fall on the musical continuum? I think I'm well below the people who do it for beer money. I've plinked around on the piano and played trumpet and French horn in the past, but none of that ever went anywhere. (Let me tell you, playing French horn during marching season is deadly!) My one strength is a good ear for harmonies. I sing in a tiny-and-rhythm-impaired-but-spirited gospel choir, which I find to be good for the soul, in several senses of the word. I mostly get picked to sing in duets, since the director knows I can hear and hold harmony parts (unlike our entire tenor section, alas). However, I do think I am the member most likely to be swaying in the opposite direction from the rest of the choir. This caused considerable giggling in the audience during a concert once. But hey, it wasn't as embarassing as the time I got accidentally hit in the nose during a tap dancing recital in college. That's probably more than you wanted to know -- better get back to work... I got an acoustic guitar for Christmas when I was 11 or 12, and I've been playing on and off (mostly off recently) ever since. Mainly self taught, I can tinkle around pleasantly, but I don't know what I'm playing .... er, hang on a mo, that doesn't sound right. What I mean is, I don't know the names of the notes or chords I'm playing, but I DO know the names of the tunes.... usually. When I was about 16, I got roped in to play bass in a 'progressive rock' band that my friends were in, but they couldn't find a bassist, so I had a go. We rehearsed for a few months, played one gig at a local hotel that featured local bands, then I was ejected because one of the other guitarists decided HE wanted to play bass after all. I wasn't to bothered about that, as I'd only joined to fill a temporary gap. That was my one and only performance in front of an audience. One great regret I have is not taking up my dad's offer of piano or guitar lessons when I was about 8. I didn't fancy it then, but I wish I'd done it now. I keep thinking I should spend more time playing, and learning more about music. I'd love to be able to read the dots, but I'm just too lazy, and don't seem to be able to find the time, more's the pity. Slarvibarglhee alias Bill Hargreaves I.T.
