MTCBWY John ______________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________ Subject: Alloy: Allright :) Author: Elaine Linstruth at Internet Date: 03/03/98 16:43 Yay, I haven't been pummelled with ICK. Awesome. So, in the spirit of things, here's a question I was wondering about: (TMDR-related in a tangent sort of way). Have you all heard that the Artist (Prince) has released his new album (another double album), and it is for sale in one retail outlet only? (In the US, it's Best Buy.) I was reading an article about this, and it appears that what they're trying to do is circumvent the usual 4th-5th-6th middle man thing that is so much a part of any artist's trying to get a record made/marketed/sold/accounted etc. This is a goal of Beatnik too, no? Anyway, it sounds intriguing to me.. of course, Prince has his own recording studio and doesn't need any label to produce an album, so it's all relative. But, if he succeeds in making this album sell, it might signal a turn in how we are marketed and/or how we shop for music in the US at least. (Internet notwithstanding.) I thought I'd open this up as a topic, because I wonder what parallels we can draw between this approach and Beatnik, and also what some of you who know more about the recording industry can tell us. Like, is the Artist really doing something special here, or is this all just pure hype. Btw, the supposition is that he chose Best Buy because they are Minnesota-based, as is he. (This is why he didn't choose some major outlet like Tower or HMV.) - -- Elaine Linstruth Palmdale, CA (USA) - --IMA.Boundary.339100988 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; name="RFC822 message headers" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Description: cc:Mail note part Content-Disposition: inline; filename="RFC822 message headers" Received: from ns2.baxter.com (159.198.1.38) by ccmailgw.mcgawpark.baxter.com with SMTP (IMA Internet Exchange 2.1 Enterprise) id 0033D06C; Tue, 3 Mar 98 18:56:37 - -0600 Received: from siren.shore.net (siren.shore.net [207.244.124.5]) by ns2.baxter.com (8.8.0/8.8.0) with SMTP id TAA20280 for ; Tue, 3 Mar 1998 19:09:45 - -0600 (CST) Received: from smoe.org [204.167.97.154] (root) by siren.shore.net with esmtp (Exim) id 0yA2XV-0006CD-00; Tue, 3 Mar 1998 20:00:05 -0500 Received: from localhost (daemon@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/listq-jane) with SMTP id TAA10799; Tue, 3 Mar 1998 19:53:36 -0500 (EST) Received: by smoe.org (bulk_mailer v1.5); Tue, 3 Mar 1998 19:53:31 -0500 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/listq-jane) id TAA10701 for alloy-outgoing; Tue, 3 Mar 1998 19:46:13 -0500 (EST) Received: from mx-a.qnet.com (mx-a.qnet.com [207.155.33.13]) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/daemon-mode-relay2) with ESMTP id TAA10697 for ; Tue, 3 Mar 1998 19:46:06 -0500 (EST) Received: from cello.qnet.com (elaine@cello.qnet.com [207.155.38.12]) by mx-a.qnet.com (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id QAA07470 for ; Tue, 3 Mar 1998 16:43:39 -0800 (PST) Date: Tue, 3 Mar 1998 16:43:36 -0800 (PST) From: Elaine Linstruth To: alloy@smoe.org Subject: Alloy: Allright :) Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-alloy@smoe.org Reply-To: alloy@smoe.org X-To-Unsubscribe: Send mail to "alloy-request@smoe.org" X-To-Unsubscribe: with "unsubscribe" as the body. The artist's duty towards his art - this is really tricky. It's so hard to say what someone as monstrously talented as Thos should or shouldn't do with his music. Although he brings us all great joy through his talents on a daily basis, creating like that, as most of us know, is not only physically and mentally draining, but is also a huge emotional commitment, which I would probably not enter into if I had any choice about it. Thomas really probably is fed up of having to submit his beautiful work to the record industry rats, the kind of people who initially refused to release OK Computer etc etc. Also, as I think Omega said, he is already known as an '80s man - even my producer, who is a man of uncommon musical knowledge, doesn't know anything beyond Hyperactive and Science. Sure it's sad, but that is the way of things - the greatest majority strive to the basest mediocrity in matters of art, and Thomas will know that better than anyone. So quite apart from the fact that he may not feel he has much more to say to us (though I personally doubt it!) the logistics of it might prove insurmountable. And, of course, he does have other eggs to fry.... 2. The best album - I love this one! The arguments will rage on and on - I tell you what - why don't we have an Alloy survey? If everyone mails me with their preference we can get it sorted out once and for all, and then still argue after that. I'll compile the results and post in a couple of days or whatever. Let me know if this is a cool idea, we could even broaden the survey to encompass other things, a bit of a census. All suggested questions to me! For my money though, Aliens still has it - it really is the summit of Thomas' musical achievement, especially in the realms of innovation. Each song is driven by such a wild visionary idea that it is impossible to imagine how he talked people into doing it. The lyrics are smart and fitting and funny, and the performances are exquisite; and then of course, there's Budapest..... I do love A&H, which has perhaps greater emotional depth (to use too grand a term) tied up in the lyrical conceits, particularly on ILYG, Beauty and I Live In A Suitcase, and the arrangements are just as sharp, with the amazing use of the ground bass better even than on Airhead. OK, there's not much in it, but I'm sticking with Aliens. If anyone has any ideas for an Alloy census then mail me asap - I'll administrate as there's not much else to do here at work at the moment.... the_copse ps. welcome John, and don't worry about excommunication - we're not excommunicating types (much) If we were I for one wouldn't still be around.... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Mar 1998 10:10:14 -0600 From: John_Hanson_at_FRMA01@ccmailgw.mcgawpark.baxter.com Subject: Re: Alloy: Interesting link - --IMA.Boundary.137300988 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Description: cc:Mail note part "Great Lift Journeys of Norwich (and other stories)" has to be perhaps the finest album titles of all time, and if not, certainly ranks alongside the following... Is there something you haven't told us, young man? (Switching to old fart rambling mode) As a parent of two (count 'em, TWO) teenage kids, I have always thought it my duty to a) ensure they have the opportunity to hear as many musical types as possible, and b) not dismiss music THEY like just because it's not my personal taste. When my son was around 11 or 12, he was a big Michael Jackson fan, but this didn't worry me because he often as not borrowed my Beatles albums as well. ( I must confess here that I think 'Give In To Me' is a superb song, possibly partly because of Slash's [if that's what his name is] excellent guitar work, which shows that even MJ can turn out something out of the ordinary from time to time.) Since then my son's been into heavy/thrash metal, grunge and even rap (which I personally can't stand). He also went through a phase of borrowing from my TMDR collection, 'Astronauts and Heretics' being the item most often loaned. My daughter prefers modern soul and dance, but also borrows from both my wife and myself, so we can often hear the strains of anything from Louise or All Saints to Carol King or Sheryl Crow (did I spell Sheryl right this time? I don't know, because both albums are in my daughter's room again). It's also surprising how many songs from the 60's, 70's and 80's she's familair with. My wife and I play 'em, but we had no idea Jenny was paying attention. Her boyfriend professes to be a jungle fan, but after finding me watching 'The Golden Age of Video' and 'The Gate..' one day, he's also becoming a keen TMDR fan. Neil Leacy, who appears to be a clone of me ... or am I a clone of him(?), well, either way, I recently sent him a tape of the latest Brand X album, and when he mailed me about it, said he'd only been able to listen to it all the way through once because his 10 year old son had overheard it and subsequently commandeered it. Sounds like another child is being brought up in the right musical atmosphere, despite what the 'men-in-black' try to foist off on today's youngsters. Good music IS out there, sometimes it takes a little finding, but it is there. If your home is filled with a wide variety of music, your kids are sure to pick up on some good stuff. But remember 'good' is subjective, and we're all allowed to enjoy whatever jangles our bells at any given moment. In my record collection I have both Abba and Frank Zappa, and a lot of stuff in between. There's something in there to suit any mood. What puzzles me about ME is that my parents weren't big music fans so where did MY eclectic love of music come from? Answers on the back of signed blank cheques, please. Fortunately I had two older brothers who broadened my horizons with more popular music of the time like Beatles, Kinks, Small Faces, Animals etc. But it was not until late high school that I discovered 'alternative' music (which in this case was anything not played on commercial radio). As part of a trial music corriculum, a non-music teacher (he actually taught physical education) was brought in to introduce us to something quite different. He started the very first lesson without saying a word playing Pink Floyd's Meddle (quite loudly as I remember it). This was the 20 minute intrumental side 2 bit. Nobody knew what to say - it was so ... so... wonderfully weird. Anyway in coming weeks he played all sorts of really cool stuff like King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Mike Oldfield, Steeleye Span, Bowie and so on. A lot of the others switched off to all this 'new' stuff but I had an insatiable thirst which couldn't be quenched. In coming years I would spend all the money I earned (after school doing all the crap jobs at a local supermarket) on all sorts of really cool music. But I digress...
