As you know, we here on Alloy are always eager to learn anything new about Thomas' exploits, especially when it comes to appearances, articles, as well as new things Headspace is up to. Since there are just under 100 of us and we're spread throughout the world, we're getting pretty good at catching some of the occasions TMDR is caught in the public eye. This is a hit & miss affair though: we're still missing some of the major events, e.g. we've received unconfirmed reports he was doing regular spots on David Letterman's Late Show last week in place of Paul Schafer. Problem was that none of us found out until after the fact: it would have been great to have caught it. So, I've got a favour to ask if I may. I realise that along with everyone else at Headspace you're (as we say in Australia) flat out like a lizard drinking, but given you're Thomas' manager and likely privy to the details, is there any chance you could let us know when events like above are likely to happen? Even a quick one-liner like 'Hey guys, Thomas may be doing a cameo on Friends showing next Thursday.' to either myself or the list would be something we'd be really grateful for. In fact, since most of us evangelise a bit when it comes to TMDR and Headspace, it could actually turn out to be quite a productive PR mechanism for prospects that may not otherwise be realised. Actually, my dream usually starts off that I'm in New York on vacation and I was lucky enough to score tickets to Letterman. I'm sitting in the audience waiting for the show to start when Biff comes out and says, "Does anyone here play keyboards." and I put up my hand. I'm suddenly whisked backstage by two stage hands. I discover Paul slipped on some ice and has broken both arms and they need someone to fill in in an emergency. Then I'm plopped down in Pauls "Cockpit o' keys" and I'm being given the 10 count. The keyboards are all these wierd mutant keyboards with whacked out alternate tunings and nothing makes any sense what so ever and everyone's looking at me like I'm supposed to know what's going on. I usually wake up very paniced. I don't know why I get these dreams. I'd love to have Paul's job (I'm Canadian, I wear glasses, I play keyboards what more could they want?). And I have no performance anxieties what so ever. Infact "stage fright" is one of the last phobias I'd ever be struck by. I've performed live for over 250,000 people ("Days Of Action" rally in Hamilton) without a single jitter (well a guy who hated accordions and threatened to beat me up did make me a little nervous). I've played infront of crowds of drunken irishmen who are eager to beat you to a pulp if you "suck" and I was cool as a cucumber. Infact, I've got my PhD in performance from The Centre Of Attention. But I get this same performance anxiety dream you mentioned. I also get dreams where I'm a musical guest on Letterman and those dreams always go very well (I love those dreams). The only thing I can figure is that the "Fill in for Paul" nightmare is symbolic of something other than performance anxiety because that's just simply something I don't have. Maybe it's triggered from a feeling of being out of control in a situation in which you are supposed to be in charge. I dunno. ~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~ >Now, I can barely play the keyboard parts to my own songs, let alone rattle >off an instant 15-second rendition of "My Sharona", waving my arms to conduct >an eleven-piece band, while packed into a shiny red suit. ~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~ Just bounce the octaves and you've got an instant "My Sharona". ;) It's mostly just a matter of building a library of standard "quick stop" endings that can be cued when needed. You'll notice that's mostly what Paul does when he's conducting is to cue a quick stop. It's nothing to be too scared of you just have to make sure you cue it in a spot where it makes musical sense. Actually, it's not all that different from what you do when you make music soundtracks for games and you have to cue quick stops or score changes based on variables in the game. It's also pretty much what happens when you're jamming with a band of talented musicians and you're ad libbing to songs only one or two of you are familiar with. Just watch for your cues and rely on standards. No doubt you've heard the saying, "God bless the man who invented 'cha-cha-cha'." Bira knows he's saved my ass more than once. The "shiny red suit" is what would scare me the most. I'm more of a tuxedo man myself (Bira how I love a good tuxedo). ~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~ >All that said, I'm hearing a strong desire form this list to be kept abreast >of any live performances, lectures etc that I do, and I will certainly try to >make sure you know about them.
