December 27th, I got a call from a old friend, and former Salt Lake co-worker who has been staying with his sister in San Francisco looking for a job in the Civil Engineering / Environmental field. He said his luck at finding a job that would support the cost of living there was difficult and wanted to come to Denver to see what he could find here. So as of December 29th I've had a house guest in my small one bedroom apartment. He's been using my computer for job hunting, so I haven't been on as often. I guess it's not so bad, he's been cleaning up (and I can't find anything) as a way to pay me back for my hospitality. I haven't had a chance to work on the mix tape, and I'm not sure I'm totally clear on the concept. I'm supposed to send one to everyone on the list, myself excluded - is that right? Happy belated New Year everyone, Keith Stansell Denver, CO (Go Broncos!) __________________________________________________ http://www.concentric.net/~kasman ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jan 98 22:17:19 +1000 From: Paul Baily Subject: Re:Alloy: messagefromTMDR [...] >>Now the real question, did Thomas receive your question 10 years ago?.... >> >>Here's the header for our timeless leader's message: >> >>> From: Thomas Dolby >>> To: alloy@smoe.org >>> Subject: Alloy: message from TMDR >>> Date: Thursday, March 20, 2008 5:17 AM > >Then it's even worse than I thought... it isn't even Christmas where Thomas >is! Okay, I think enough (relative) time has elapsed that I can divulge the true cause ...okay, so I meant to reply to this last year but I'm only just catching up with my mail and I can't be bothered jumping again (see below.) This actually ties in with Thomas' work at Headspace, specifically a classified project known as Temporal Recursive Engineering Enhancement (TREE). Simply put, the principle is this: what one of us hasn't ruefully thought the infamous 'if I knew then what I know now' line? Well TREE essentially takes advantage of this and applies it to practical, but temporally stable areas. The idea is Headspace starts work on a brilliant new technology today, then a small team uses the TREE system to jump forward to a point in the future, say 5 or 10 years. They then learn everything about the now-completed technology, then return to our timeline with the new knowledge. The recursion starts when you repeat the process, e.g. if a process is going to take 20 years to develop, you simply use TREE for two 10 year cycles. End result: many years worth of R&D done in a few days. I'm still not privy to the specifics (though they did let me try a jump with a short range prototype - the 'lude did 0-100 in under 4 secs that day!) but hopefully you see the potential and why they've had to keep quiet about it. To answer your original question about why Thomas' message was dated so far in the future, well that occured on the third jump I believe. Long story, but he was using his laptop halfway through the jump to do some fine tuning and the message somehow went out. To sum up, the lad was slightly out of his TREE. Paul. [Time on hands. Weird mood. Sorry.] ________________________________________________________________________ Paul Baily paulb@thehub.com.au JustSomeGuy http://www.thehub.com.au/~paulb Brisbane tel: +61-7-3857-8048/+61-411-875-009 Australia When your turn comes round and the light goes on. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 18:26:45 EST From: RThurF Subject: Re: Alloy: messagefromTMDR [...] In a message dated 98-01-12 07:27:48 EST, Paul wrote: << The idea is Headspace starts work on a brilliant new technology today, then a small team uses the TREE system to jump forward to a point in the future, say 5 or 10 years. Hey, got my first tape from the club - (From JAMAC - lives just down the way) I guess I had better get going on my tape. Sorry, it's just difficult because my new (temporary I hope) house mate has taken over my Audio/Video system and so it's a little difficult to find the time to tape between the movies and Melrose Place. So please be patient. - -- Keith Stansell Denver, CO __________________________________________________ http://www.concentric.net/~kasman ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V3 #10 **************************
