I prefer it this way anyway, dear Miles, as the post office is too busy right before Christmas anyway. Less chance of my treasured shirt being lost forever somewhere in that void between here and there. Robin ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Dec 1997 07:42:10 EST From: RThurF Subject: Alloy:???BigMusicEx.(proposed) Oh, I am so behind on my reading. It sounds as if Copse is proposing that we each contribute one personal favorite song to a single compilation tape, and then distribute copies so that everyone can hear all sorts of strange things they might never have heard otherwise. is this true? And is copse organising it? Does the tape travel around to each of us to be recorded upon, then passed to the next contributor - or do we tape our favorite song & then send it to someone for compiling? Robin ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Dec 1997 08:34:05 -0500 From: Beth Meyer Subject: Re: Alloy:???BigMusicEx.(proposed) Hi, Robin et al; >It sounds as if Copse is proposing that we each contribute one personal >favorite song to a single compilation tape, and then distribute copies so that >everyone can hear all sorts of strange things they might never have heard >otherwise. is this true? Right purpose, but the proposed implementation is a little different. The idea is that we each make a whole 90-minute tape of (as I interpret it) music that we would like to share with other Alloy members, ideally that they're not likely to have heard. (Though a few of my own selections are depressingly mainstream -- apologies in advance.) Also, along with the tape, you ideally write up some background notes about the music -- artist and album, best album by that artist in your opinion, why this music is important to you, etc. Once you've compiled an original tape, you then dub a bunch of copies onto CR-90 cassette tapes and send them out with copies of the notes to the other people on the list. At about the same time, you get back a bunch of other people's tapes with samples of cool music from them. So you end up with as many tapes as you purchased, all filled with cool music from around the world! I've got my tape compiled, and had a whale of a lot of fun doing it too! However, I'm still working on the notes. (That may be my Christmas project.) I get it now! It's like a Chris Sheppard Pirate Radio Mix then selected by the alloy members. We submit a song we really like and they're all compiled onto a single tape sort of like the B-Day tape but with other people's stuff. Hey, I'm up for that. I can easily submit a song or two. I thought I had to put together 90 minutes of music I listen to which would be hard to do since I really don't have that much other people's music on tape. Count me in then. I have a CD of a local group I really like that I'm sure would be appreciated by my fellow alloyites. Crackers - Hot Sauce Keith Stansell - Wreck of the Fairchild Jose Gomez - Puppet Theatre Miles - The Flat Earth The Copse - One Of Our Submarines Lee Jackson - Dissidents JAMac - Beauty Of A Dream Croydon - Valley Of The Mind's Eye If you don't see your name up there and you want to contribute to the project, send in your dibb on a Thomas Dolby cover. Remember, first in my e-mail box, first counted. Also for those of you just joining us this year's Project B-day will be more special than last year's. This year, in addition to submitting a cover of one of Thomas's songs each contributor may also submit an ORIGINAL SONG!!! If you're not a musician and you'd still like to contribute to the tape then record a "birthday greeting" and send it in on a 90 minute, chrome cassette tape (with return postage). The deadline for submissions is SEPTEMBER 1ST! Now that really seems like a long long way away right now, but last year some people put their recording off to the last minute and missed the deadline. So don't delay! Also, Robin and Dave are running a special B-Day book project for non-musical artists to contribute to. So don't be left out of this year's B-Day Project! Get your dibbs in now! Then record your original and Dolby cover and mix them to a 90 minute chrome cassette tape. I'm pretty sure that Ian will be doing the final compilation on the project but I'll find out for certain. Also I'm taking suggestions for the title of this year's Project B-Day tape. So post your title suggestions and we'll vote on them later. As well... if someone else would like to design the J-Card for this year's project, just let me know. After reading a letter from copse just now, it's beginning to look as if it really is meant to be a whole tape that we each contribute, and then mail around to each other. Anyway crackers, I know that we'd love to hear 90 minutes worth of your own work & that of other local musicians, if this is most of what you have.
