Crackers, you'll probably be surprised to learn that the book came about following the collapse of Sagan's first movie deal. He'd been commissioned to write a screenplay, but the whole deal fell apart and so he re-wrote it as a novel. It says something like that in the foreword of my copy. I haven't seen the film, but I liked the book, even if the characters were a little flat. The central theme of hidden messages in transcendental numbers just leaves your jaw hanging.
