A synth module is just a synth that doesn't have a keyboard. Once you've bought a midi synth with a keyboard, you no longer need to buy keyboards from then on. You can buy synth modules instead and control them from your master keyboard. Because they don't have keyboards and are in much smaller packaged, synth modules are significantly cheaper than keyboard synths. General Midi is a midi standard that determines what sounds a keyboard has, where those sounds are located, where the drums are mapped, and other functions like polyphony and what not. This means if you compose a midi file on one GM synth then someone downloads it and plays it on their GM synth, it should (in theory) sound very close to what you recorded. The problem is while the standard sets parametres for what sounds you got and where they are, it doesn't set standards for the quality of those sounds. So one synth's trumpet may sound like a blast from the angel Gabriel and another synth's trumpet may sound like the blast from the back end of a fat man who won a chili eating contest. The TG-100 is a very cheap (because it's simple and discontinued) GM synth module and it has very good sounds. There are some GM modules which sound like absolute garbage (they basically sound like the old 8-bit Sound Blaster emulating General Midi with it's FM voices). So you'll want to give them a listen before you get one. Most of the midi files you find on the net have been recorded in GM. (The ones on my webpage are all GM... although one of them uses some percussion sounds that are unique to the TG-100 so they might sound odd on another GM module (the castinets in the Speghetti Western song)). Since the Mirage isn't a multi-timberal synth, you're going to be rather limited in your arrangement capabilities unless you get some more synths. Now adays a single synth can often give you 16 or more multi-timberal channels, but back in the days of the Mirage many synths were mono-timberal. And those that were multi-timberal were seldom capable of more than 4 different sounds at once. Of course, like I mentioned before, you can get around this problem by loading different sounds into the upper and lower keyboard halves.
