Right now in Canada we're getting the Teletoon channel for free. Every Saturday Night at midnight the have "Late Night Anime". I've been taping them while I can. Two weeks ago it was "Wings Of Honneamise/Royal Space Force". I watched it and I thought, "Man, that's some damn good anime." The artwork was increadably and the story was very touching. I thought the soundtrack was extremelly well done too. But I didn't even think to look to see who did it. It certainly wasn't like the soundtrack of the last Anime movie I watched on the Space Channel... sheeesh. I didn't even bother to tape that one. It was about some solar sail space ship searching for the planet Odin. The story was week, the voice acting poor, and the soundtrack just blew bigtime. I've said it before and I'll say it again... THOMAS DOLBY SHOULD BE SCORING ANIME SOUNDTRACKS!!!!!! As well as voice acting in the english dubbs. Hell, I'd LOVE to score an anime soundtrack. I'd do it for room and board! It would give me a great chance to put my japanese to some practical use. Any anime producers on this list reading this, just think how much some wethifl accordion could enliven your next picture! You can also find a lot of high quality PD sequencers on the net. One thing though, the Mirage is not a multi-timberal synth, so it can only play the sounds that are currently loaded into it. Of course you can load different sounds on different halves of the keyboard, but you can't have different sounds on different midi channels. It's really amazing what the ST can do when it comes to midi. I've got a 44MHz 486, 8meg memory, and 500Meg HD, and it can't even come close to doing what I can do on my lowly 1meg, 8MHz, no-hard drive 1040ST. Of course, with the PCs it feels like 90% of your system resources are dedicated to just running the damn operating system. It freaks out all my PC friends when they see what I can do on my 10year old ST. They have a hard time getting over the fact that the machine is completely usable without a hard drive. Oh the joys of having the operating system on ROM. I can't wait until I build a keyboard for the Mega 2 ST I found the other day. Although I've yet to max out the resources of my 1 Meg ST. ~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~ >The minor snag being that my PC doesn't have any Midi sockets at all. >I think I'll need to get back to you when I've tracked down an ST. Even with the expansion cartridge it was still a weenie little sequencer. The only time I've ever used it was when I needed a rough midi "note pad". Incidently, if you're handy with a soldering iron there are some hardware modifications you can make to it (like giving it stereo out put, etc). Of course I haven't been able to find them yet. I'd like to be able to modify it to allow realtime control of the analogue filters as well as a filter input to run external audio sources through the filters. ~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~ >While I'm here, I'd like to lay a very tentative dibb on The Valley of the >Mind's Eye... One other thing you might want to keep your eyes open for is a General Midi synth module. You should be able to get a second hand, discontinued model like the Yamaha TG-100 for under $150. This will give you a much larger sound pallet as well as letting you easily play General Midi midi files you find on the net. If you get one of these your midi hook-up will go.... Mirage Midi Out -> Atari ST Midi In. Atari ST Midi Out -> GM Synth Module Midi In. GM Synth Module Midi Thru -> Mirage Midi In. Do you have the manual for the Mirage? Or the Quick Reference Card? Incidently, there were a series of disks for the the Mirage called the "Signature Series" which were used as promotional items. They were disks of samples created by big musicians of the 80s. Peter Gabriel made a signature disk for the Mirage, but I have one disk that's not an original that is labled. SND #1 Gabriel SND #2 Dolby SND #3 Sherlock Comp I don't know who or what a Sherlock Comp is, but it would seem that the first two sounds on this disk might have been copied from the Signature Series. Although I don't know if Thomas Dolby ever created a signature disk for the Mirage, or if these are just samples that were transfered from his Fairlight library. Incidently, as an interesting side note. The Ensoniq Mirage has better resolution, filters, and twice the polyphony of the original, $250000 Sinclavier I. And when hooked up to an ST using Sound Designer and Notator or Q-Base, it has better sample editing and sequencing too. Makes you wish you had a time machine. "Hey Mr. Studio Guy, don't pay $250000 for that Sinclavier, I'll sell you this superior system for only $150000 cash!" Of course then you'd probably get the Time Cops all over your ass. Why did the chicken cross the road? MOSES: And God came down from the Heavens, and He said unto the Chicken, "Thou shalt cross the road." And the chicken crossed the road, and there was much rejoicing. FOX MULDER: You saw it cross the road with your own eyes. How many more chickens have to cross the road before you believe it? RICHARD M. NIXON: The chicken did not cross the road. I repeat, the chicken did NOT cross the road. JERRY SEINFELD: Why does anyone cross a road? I mean, why doesn't anyone ever think to ask, "What the heck was this chicken doing walking around all over the place, anyway?" FREUD: The fact that you are at all concerned that the chicken crossed the road reveals your underlying sexual insecurity. BILL GATES: I have just released the new Chicken Office 2000, which will not only cross roads, but will lay eggs, file your important documents, and balance your checkbook. OLIVER STONE: The question is not, "Why did the chicken cross the oad?" Rather, it is, "Who was crossing the road at the same time, whom we overlooked in our haste to observe the chicken crossing?" DARWIN: Chickens, over great periods of time, have been naturally selected in such a way that they are now genetically disposed to cross roads. LOUIS FARRAKHAN: The road, you will see, represents the black man. The chicken 'crossed' the black man in order to trample him and keep him down. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.: I envision a world where all chickens will be free to cross roads without having their motives called into question. GRANDPA: In my day, we didn't ask why the chicken crossed the road. Someone told us that the chicken had crossed the road, and that was good enough for us. MACHIAVELLI: The point is that the chicken crossed the road. Who cares why? The end of crossing the road justifies whatever motive there was. EINSTEIN: Whether the chicken crossed the road or the road moved beneath the chicken depends upon your frame of reference. BUDDHA: Asking this question denies your own chicken nature. RALPH WALDO EMERSON: The chicken did not cross the road; it transcended it. ERNEST HEMINGWAY: To die. In the rain. But nobody can seem to remember his real name. I still have a hard time seing him as a futuristic warrior, but everybody I know who worked on the set said that he is actually really cool. So I don't know.>> Actually Doogie wasn't a warrior in it. He was a colonol working for army inteligence. You didn't see much of him, but when you did he was in sort of a Gestapo (sp?) uniform. Its a silly movie, but as far as violence, its all comic book stuff. So although its quite graphic, the characters are so two dimensional that it doesn't really hit you the way it would in a more realistic film. - --Dave ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Nov 1997 17:31:33 -0500 (EST) From: DThurkirk@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: Caligula was an amatuer In a message dated 11/18/97 4:07:51 AM, you wrote: <> You're sure this was a "B" movie? That would be the so-called "synth version" with Akiko Yano, yes that's Ryuichi's wife, Ms. Sakamoto (that's not her in the SBMWS video, BTW.) The "guitar version" of Radio Silence features Lene Lovich performing the manta "Try to think of nothing." However, she stars as "Caroline" (with blonde wig) in the Radio Silence video--which, of course, is tracked with the synth version. Anyroadup, Mr Connolly is allowed a certain amount of artistic license, and you have to admit that in some cases the flask and oranges, viewed in isolation, are pretty weird looking equipment. Then again I've seen some pretty ugly women in my time ...... hell, I'm digging myself into a corner and painting myself into a hole here. I know, I know, it's all subjective, and in the eye of the beholder and all that jazz, but I can't help what I find attractive and what I don't, particularly as I'm now at that dangerous age (i.e. any age over 40) when I find more young women attractive than I would have done at 21. Or maybe it's just that with a little more maturity I appreciate more than just the physical attributes of women. Bugger it! You've got me thinking about this now. I remember when I was on a residential training course a few years ago, with a mixed group of other trainers that I knew very well, and as well as the lads leering after the females at the centre, some of the lasses were jokingly talking about what it was about men that turned them on. Most like a nicely rounded bottom that filled a chap's trousers nicely, but others remarked about other physical qualities. I think this was the first time that I'd heard women talking about men in the same kind of way that men talk about women and it gave me a different perspective on the whole subject. For one thing it made me realise that in some ways there are less differences between the sexes than I'd previously thought. I'm sorry, I rambled off again there. It's Dave's fault.
