(Woohoo). It would be great if we got such a turn out this year that we needed to make it a double tape set. Glad you're going to contribute this year. As for the 4-Track... the type I used (Tascam Porta Studio One) sells used here in Canada for around $350. I don't know what they go for in the States though. They make new ones in the $500-$800 price range depending on what sort of features you're after. Those 4-Track porta-studios have got to be the best thing to come out for the unknown musician on a budget, even better than MIDI. And you combine the two and you're unstopable. I get very good results with my simple 4-track/MIDI setup. Infact, if you want to get into MIDI it's never been cheaper. I've found a whole slew of old Atari ST computers at the Goodwill and Sally-Anne for only $10 each (well... I paid $15 for one, but it was a Mega-2 ST). They may be ancient machines, but I can do more on them than I can on my 486 when it comes to MIDI (and they don't crash as much either). Of course, all of use obviously already have computers so the lack of a computer isn't really an issue. But for someone just starting out, I recommend hitting the thrift shops looking for an old ST. And just think, probably by the year 2005 there'll be digital porta-studios that are just as cheap as the analogue ones are today! One of my problems with the film was that the Southern soldiers were at least three times the shot that any Northern soldier was, and would have picked Kevin Costner off that horse in about two seconds when he rode out onto the open field, crazy or not. They've had some great adverts on TV as well, usually starting as some sort of sophisticated product which fools you into thinking it's for something else, often featuring a world class model in an apparently exotic location surrounded by bronzed studs, and it's only at the end you find out it's for Boddies, probably in Blackpool or on the Manchester Ship Canal and with the punch line delivered in a Manchester accent. The current one involves a black athlete running across the desert a-la Pirelli tires advert, which you may not get in the US, and a vehicle streaking along in the distance, chasing the athlete to an exciting musical soundtrack. This goes on for some time until the vehicle overtakes the athlete and stops in a cloud of dust, but it isn't a Ferrari or Porche, it's an ice cream cart, driven by the lovely Melanie Sykes, a gorgeous model and TV personality from Manchester. She hands the athlete a pint of Boddies, with its trade-mark creamy head, and asks him, 'Do you want a flake with that, chuck?' in her broad Mancunian accent, which immediately destroys her air of sophistication. One of the first ads showed a beautiful woman in a trendy apartment getting ready for a night on the town while her dinner suited beau waits on the balcony. She applies a very rich face cream to her velvety smooth cheek, but on the second application you see that she's scooping it from the creamy head of a pint of Boddies. As her beau places her wrap around her shoulders he says, 'By 'eck, you smell gorgeous tonight sweet heart,' in the typical Mancunian accent and surreptitiously takes a swig from the pint as she gets up to leave. If you're not sure what a Mancunian accent sounds like, 'Daphne' in Frasier is a close approximation, though she's supposed to be from Rochdale, which is a few miles north of Manchester.
