There's also a Chorlton-on-Medlock within a few miles and Chapel-en-le-Frith less than an hour's drive from here. we have plenty of weird names in England and these are some of them. >Now Slarvi, that's not a very good attitude. And I wondered if the project had run out of steam, as mail on the subject suddenly dried up. Perhaps I was being too cynical, but I've seen this kind of thing before; someone gets an idea, lots of others get all fired up about it, lots of planning takes place, then people start to disagree about how to progress the work, then ....... it all goes quiet, sometimes because the main protagonists got over enthusiastic about it only to find that it's too much work or too difficult and things don't work out as planned so it goes on indefinite hold. I hope this isn't the case here. I feared that the Birthday Tape might go the same way, and I'm dead chuffed that it didn't. As for having Chorlton on the tour list, I simply thought it would add something a little unusual. Here I've been a fan of both Thomas Dolby and "Weird Al" since the early 80's (seen them both in concert, even) and I never picked up on this. Though I think part of the reason was that I had "Dare To Be Stupid" on tape rather than CD, so I hadn't listened to it in a while. But, upon reading this, I dug it out and gave "Slime Creatures" another listen. Sure enough, it's pure "Hyperactive!"/"White City"-style Thomas Dolby. Got the little effect-laden high voice in the chorus, what sounds like exactly the same sort of bass line, a spoken voice over the ending choruses, etc. My husband was around when I put it on, and without my having told him anything about why I was playing it, he immediately commented, "Oh, that's Weird Al doing Thomas Dolby -- at one point in his career, anyway." The song is similar in style to "Hyperactive!" - even has >that patented Dolby "aaaaaaAAAAAAHHHHHH", if I remember correctly. >-- Actually, it's an "ooooooOOOOOOOH". But yeah, it's there. I can't believe I didn't pick up on that (or don't remember having picked up on that). Wow. > ^ > ` ` "I am Ohm of Borg. I hope that you've ALL been mulling over your various ideas for poetry, short stories, drawings, paintings, photographs, etc to contribute to Thomas' birthday art collection, which will coincide with the music tape for next year!! Again, even if you already plan to do a song for the tape, you are encouraged to also be in the book - and visual/literary artists shouldn't hold back from trying their hand at recorded music too. Right now, I do need to hear from those who plan to contribute, so I'll have some vague idea of how thick the book will be (I'm designing the binding now). Please let me know at your earliest convenience: RThurF@aol.com Specifications for submitted work are still available if you missed them the first time. Of course I'd love it if everyone in Alloy could contribute & that includes those of you out there who are rarely/never actually heard from on the list (you may make your contribution anonymously or under a pseudonym, if you like). It would be a real honor to have everyone represented!!! Any work of art and/or literature having to do with Thomas, or a personal interpretation of his work, is welcome. Everyone may contribute more than one piece. Get as creative or weird as you like... even if it's just that there's this knot in your wood paneling that's always reminded you of Thomas - feel free to take a picture & send it in. This is a project I think can be a lot of fun for all concerned, so don't be shy! I hope to get in touch with crackers very soon, to see if we can agree on a good way for the tape and book to be visually coordinated as a joint effort. CONTRIBUTION DEADLINE will be JUNE 1998. I tried to send a message about this earlier this week, but the computer ate it (*$&@# UNIX!) and I didn't have time to send another one -- it's been a particularly hellish week. So the subject line was particularly appropriate. Anyway, I wanted to say a big THANK YOU to Slarv for this little post, as well as to crackers for the comment on Slarv's picture around the same time. You see, this past Tuesday night, I did not check e-mail as I was too busy weeping on my husband's shoulder about how badly my experiment was going. I'm spending two weeks, three sessions a day (one right after the other), teaching 26 senior citizens how to read diagrams of logic gates. It seemed to be going particularly badly on Tuesday: this is tough stuff, and most of them just did not seem to be getting it at all. My whole dissertation seemed in question. That Wednesday morning, I spontaneously woke up at 5:00 am (couldn't sleep much) and trudged into the lab, a little dark cloud over my head. Having plenty of time after preparing everything for the day, I checked e-mail and got this message. And started giggling. When I got to this part... >>==================================================================== >>For further information on the genitalia of our IT staff at >>Britax-Excelsior visit our web pages at >> >> http://www.britax.co.uk/Neil's_Willy.html ....I just howled. In a good way. Then there was the aforementioned message from crackers. All of which went a long way towards dispersing that little black cloud and helping me be cheerful and encouraging with my long-suffering participants. Oh, yes -- and on Wednesday, they did much better, such that now 22 of them are successfully solving problems with whole diagrams of logic gate circuits. So the dissertation seems to be out of danger. Sorry for the extensive non-Dolby rambling -- that's probably more about my life than you really wanted to know -- but I always like to publicly acknowledge a well-timed good deed. Oh, and by the way Slarv -- don't listen to your critical companions, I think your picture is absolutely adorable. So there. (Uh-oh, does that qualify as more flirting on Alloy?) Our finances are not so finely balanced, and we have splashed out for far more frivolous things (such as that big green glass egg on the mantelpiece, or the "Weird Al Bad Hair Day tour" t-shirt in my dresser)... First of all, I don't think anyone has mentioned the greetings. I actually enjoy listening to them every time I rewind the tape. Particularly crackers' and Elaine's and Neil's. Also, at this point just about every song has taken a turn at being my favorite. I've gone whole days with someone's version of a TMDR song going through my head (Friday it was Stephen & Mary's "Therapy/Growth," while Erik's "Weightless" lasted for a couple of days). I have definitely decided that I would pay good money to hear crackers perform live or to buy an album by Lissu. (Probably the reverse too.) I have once or twice listened to Erik's "Weightless," then had to rewind the tape and listen to it again immediately -- something I rarely do. It really grew on me! That guitar arrangement is gorgeous. And yes, Erik's vocals do sound a little like Canned Heat (as I recall, they did a song that keeps repeating the phrase, "I'm going up the country, mama do you wanna go?"). The vocals also reminded me of the band Flaming Lips -- they did a song called "Vaseline," about a woman who spreads Vaseline on toast and eats it for breakfast. (A use of Vaseline that has NOT appeared in a Thomas Dolby song, to my knowledge.) Only Erik sounded better than the guy from Flaming Lips. I particularly liked the harmony parts. And Erik's vocals actually have one up on Thomas' -- the words were a bit clearer. If I'd heard Erik's version earlier, I wouldn't have made that embarassing knitting gaffe this summer (I always thought Thomas was singing, "drop one, drop two"...something something). About the copse's "Flying North" -- a lovely rendition. Anyone else find the opening bars reminiscent of The Pretenders' "Ohio"? About Stephen & Mary's "Therapy/Growth" -- very cool to finally hear this song, and done quite nicely. It tends to get in my head and stay there. And who knew that, in addition to her other many talents, Mary spoke beautiful French? Of course, I've been racking my brain trying to interpret it with my very rusty French skills. Is this what you're saying? "One cannot find this song of Thomas' anymore for certain." (And of course, the "Happy birthday, Thomas!" at the end.) Well, that's all for now -- off to give it another listen...
