I'm posting this to the list so that others can prevent it from happening to themselves. I came home from a long night at work, with my brains more scrambled than usual, and decided to pop the tape in for a quick listen. I hit the play button on my semi-ancient Aiwa AD-S27, waited, and wondered why I wasn't hearing anything. I looked back at the deck and noticed something that made my stomach churn... I HAD PUSHED THE PLAY AND RECORD BUTTONS TOGETHER BY ACCIDENT!!!!! The tape was cued up on my own submission, so by now the first few seconds of Big Bang Backwards were blank. I hit stop as fast as I could, but the damage was already done. Just to make sure that I wasn't hallucinating, I pulled out the tape and looked at the tabs. Sure enough, the tabs were in place. Suffice it to say that they are no longer in place on my copy. Fellow Alloy-ites, do yourself a favor - CHECK THE RECORD TABS ON YOUR TAPES. If yours are in place, yank 'em post haste. I only hope that Ian will consent to do a re-record for me - my stupidity doesn't deserve one, but I'll go to him on bended knee if need be. // Lee Jackson // ljackson@nstar.net // Garland, TX ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Oct 1997 05:47:09 -0400 From: "Stephen M. Robin ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Oct 1997 18:36:40 -0400 (EDT) From: RThurF@aol.com Subject: Alloy: Artists/Writers/Photographers/Musicians wanted I would be overjoyed to take the reins of an art book project for next year, to coincide with the Alloy music/greetings tape as masterminded by CRACKERS. I'm posting only basics here. If anyone wants more specific details, please e-mail me at RThurF@aol.com Please save this post for future reference. THE BOOK CONCEPT THUS FAR: an 11(horiz)x14(vert) volume of original short stories, poetry, photographic work, drawings, paintings etc, to be carefully hand bound by me, all the work having to do with interpretations of or feelings inspired by Thomas' work. Thomas will receive the original, and I will make copies of the book for members who would like one. Some basics: Stories and poems can be e-mailed to me or sent to my land address; no need for special format because we can do the typesetting here. Indicate if you have a preference for a specific typeface, point size etc. Illustrated stories and poems can be completed & sent to me at my land address; be sure to use acid-free paper & leave enough margin space for binding! I would like to handle the artwork in the following manner: Original work - if you would like your ORIGINAL 2-D piece of artwork (photo, painting, drawing etc) to be mounted in the book, please make sure to paint, draw or print it11x14 size or smaller. In the case of drawings and paintings, please take steps to seal & protect the surface of the finished work adequately so it will not smear or become damaged through ordinary handling. If you do NOT want the original of your piece to go in, please proceed as follows: For photographs - scan the negative or slide into the computer & output, getting the size (to fit on an 11x14 page), color, sharpness etc. exactly as you would like it to appear in the book. Make at least two copies like this, exactly identical. Then send one copy to me in a cardboard-reinforced mailer. I will be archival-mounting it into the book exactly the way it is given to me. The extra copies I asked you to make are in case the first one somehow becomes lost or damaged, and I need another - so you won't have to go through the whole annoying scanning-in process all over again. For any other artwork - have a good photographer take a photo or slide of your work! Then follow the same steps as above for photographs. If you wish to contribute an ORIGINAL 3-D piece of work, please e-mail me for additional details. If anyone has any questions about any of the above, please e-mail me. I can begin accepting contributions immediately, and I encourage you to send more than one example of your work for inclusion in the book (I hope the book can be varied and interesting). There are many multi-talented people here at Alloy, so I hope that many of the people contributing to the music tape will also contribute to the book, and vice versa. Ultimately, I'd like it if we could coordinate the book and tape efforts well enough so that the tape and the art collection, though produced separately, could be sent out in the same package - or hand delivered by Steven, Brian, Stephen, Mary and Monya again - together, as one gift. For the sake of not ruining a certain person's birthday surprise, please save all discussion of the details of your work for personal correspondence! Thanks, Robin PS - may I take this opportunity to say..... Thanks to Thomas, a major hurdle was overcome in getting Algarve into my Home Page. I was able to feature it but only for the one play. Now it just goes on and on. And that's OK by me. This melody is haunting, sort of wispy. It really seeps into to your very soul. My sites can be viewed by Netscape Navigator, Netscape Communicator, and Microsoft Internet Explorer. Presently I have installed Netscape 3.01, Communicator 4.02, Internet Explorer 4.0. It was touch and go but finally the sweet smell of success. Voila! I pass this along to you all so that you can appreciate Algarve too. It is reminiscent of Portugal. At first I thought it had a Spanish influence but TD corrected me. It is named after a Province in Portugal on the South Atlantic Coast. Many people retire there. I have had a lot of help along the way. And there is still so much to do. But it is a challenge and a lot of fun. Remember, the Tripod Site has Algarve. Enjoy it along with me. Your ol' codger from San Diego Frank Wheeler Remember Algarve is an RMF file and can only be heard through Beatnik.
