Date: 16. October 1997 7:45 here we go again! ---------- Phewee,...difficult to start, but I'll have a go anyway! I'm a 25 year old Brit, married for two months, definately no kids, and no pets (if you don't count my husband.) I've been living in Finland for 5 years, (where I came on my undergrad. degree as an exchange student, studying Finnish Folklore & Language and the like),..I fell in love with the town where I live (Turku, south-west coast of this beautiful country,) which was my first reason for staying here,..... I work for a Finnish telecommunications as a Quality Specialist of sorts, but my real loves are music, writing and crafts/painting, the first two of which I would dearly love to do for a living if I could, as the corporate world seems to suck the very life out of me,..not a good place for me,..I feel too much. I too have a masters thesis (about the internet) sitting unfinished, for me, because of my job, (so your not the only one with unfinished business there, Robin! hell,...or was it robyn? sorry,....:-) ) As well as my first love of of making and listening to music (my parents are semi-pro folk musicians,) I'm a big Sci-fi fan, which I think goes part of the way toward explaining how I got into Thomas' music,... Apart from loving the big 80's hits (She Blinded Me,..Hyperactive,..), I got my first dolby album when I was 16 on my first trip to Finland, in a record shop near my penpal's home, (the penpal, still a friend of mine, was the original reason why I became interested in Finland). I remembered the name when I saw the album, but what really drew me to it was the weird technological cover,..especially considering that, at that age, I already had a major thing about intelligent looking guys with wild hair and glasses, and a serious penchant for sc-ifi (oh god,...the embarrasement of being a teenager(!) Even though it was already quite a few years old, Europa & the Pirate Twins seemed years ahead of anything I had ever heard,...(I still love getting my friends to guess when dolby's older music was made, and invariably, they guess it's much newer than it is.) Our honoured prez's music was and still is a massive influence in my musical life. I've been playing every kind of music, folk as a professional, and done everything from Sinatra to blues, jazz to cajun, classical to Techno. Nowadays, I'm concentrating on a local funk band, and most importantly, our House music endeavours with a very talented local artist called Sasse, who sits and listens with amazement to not just Dolby's music, but the stunning production on his tracks,..(when you really sit down and try to figure out how he does it, you get to a whole new level of appreciation in his music). As I mentioned before, there's not a whole lot of market for our House music here in Finland, but now things are looking up a little,...and let's face it, whilst it's nice to make a buck, we do music for the love of it. Now all we need is Beatnik, (and please, some good support for our vocal samples, Thomas!), and we can start getting our music out there! Thanks for what you started with Beatnik and the RMF format, Thomas,...I hope we can live up to it's promise! Ooops,...this got way too long. Thanks for your patience guys! Another Biography makes it's exit,... Your mate, Lissu P.S....I need a new Fiddle, Robin,...D'ya have any brochures? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Oct 1997 17:13:22 -0400 (EDT) From: RThurF@aol.com Subject: Re: Re: Alloy: Laurie Anderson In a message dated 10/18/97 1:14:34 PM, Jeff wrote: <> I saw the ad for the show on Friday morning, and called for tickets the moment the Sanders Theater box office opened at noon (12pm-6pm, 7 days a week; the # is 617-496-2222). That sort of thing just isn't his style at all - and anyway, "artistic license" doesn't really allow for that kind of thing unless said artist wants his neck wrung (perhaps for the sake of bad "performance art"?) I was also going to mention that I hope Beatnik wins Cool Tool of the Year or whatever, but someone beat me to it. Yay! Maybe now we'll get an update more quickly. The winners will be announced tomorrow (Monday, 10/20). - -- Elaine Linstruth Palmdale, CA (USA) ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V2 #223 ***************************
