Could be cool . . . I just saw an ad for that today in the SF Sunday Chronicle Datebook! It was just impossible to miss with that big picture of TMDR and "he blinded us with science..." motto used yet again. Is there going to be an Alloy get-together of some sort? I don't know yet if I can make it, but I hope to know by later this week. - -Phil ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Sep 1997 07:33:10 -0400 From: "Stephen M. Pictures and everything. TD looks like he does in one of the photos of him at the Beatnik Site, the walk through. If you use netscape then this gets you to the Home Page, I guess. I don't understand Networks too well. Cox@Home is a Network and they push Netscape. Here is the Web Site http://www/netscape3/ On the Cox@Home Network and their Netscape this is what I go to when I press or click their ICON on my Desk Top. http://www/netscape3/ From there you have a multitude of choices. They are all good. Some require downloads. All require Beatnik. Good luck. TD is quite the man. I hope all can visit the web sites. http://www.headspace.com/beatnik/index.html Hyperactivity http://www.tdolby.com/ http://www.thesite.com/0697w4/iview/iview619_062697.html Again good luck. OKAY....! :) Let me clarify the issue for Frank and Alloy readers. @Home is a High Speed ISP (Internet Service Provider, you know...the guys you pay a monthly bill to have you connect to the Internet and have access to e-mails.) This ISP provider, @Home, offer services in only a few areas of the US. Its so happen that Frank is in that particular area and, perhaps, subscribe to this ISP. What is unique about this ISP is that is HIGH SPEED connection, usually cable (as in Cable TV). Thus, it is possible to see digital video in real time, download items instantenously instead of waiting hours for it to come through that dingy dinosaur telephone line. In a nutshell: it is the future of the Internet. The way it ought to be...REAL FAST. Now, @Home has an Home Page; primarily, the login entrance point. Apparently, that is where our illustrious hero is plastered. Unfortunately, those of us who do not subscribe to @Home are unable to access that home page since it is proprietery. However, what I believe Frank will also like to convey is that --- on that same @Home Home Page, we are able to listen to some .RMF files. These files are only recognized by the applet Netscape plug-in called Beatnik, a revolutionary...uhhh...scratch that.! AN EVOLUTIONARY software playback technology far superior to Real Audio playback and such...which CEO T. Dolby Robertson is co-founder. Apparently, thru my altered senses, I am intuit-ing that the Home Page has a direct link to the following URL address: http://www.headspace.com/beatnik/?plug-in. On this page, there is the "Thomas DolbY's Beatnik Walkthrough." This nifty little series of guided web pages allow you to test-run the Beatnik player ONCE it has been downloaded and installed into your trusty Netscape 3.0 or above browser. Needless to say, it is a fascinating exploration through hands-on interactivity and displaying all(?) the possibility of what Beatnik provides. Interestingly, there is an alterable rendition/example of "Hyperactive" whereby one can change the tempo, volume, omit an instrument and so forth...as an Beatnik quasi-editing medium (DRASTICALLY, FANTASTICALLY RAD!!). Moreover, Headspace, sell packages of these .RMF files at about $49.99 a pop. Each set has several different types of music licensed to be embedded into a web page. Most excerpts .RMF files were authored, from what I have heard so far, by Brian Salter and/or Paul Sebastien. Some of the tunes being very interesting and "contemporary" --- well suited for a Web Page inclusion. I suppose this is what Frank is alluding to, unless there are some freeby downloads. As far the Beatnik Web Site...well this is some serious sh--t! Of course, I haven't exhausted the site. I believe Headspace is going to take some acclimitizing...a New Toy to learn and use effectively...please TDR don't hesitate to have your cohorts send me evaluation packages...I will be a-Knock, Knock Knocking at Headspace Door for those Win '95 beta's. So Paul B...I was mistaken...I didn't COMPLETELY visit the Headspace joint. I hope this clarifies Franks' Alloyed e-mailed excitement which, through our private e-mail "conversations," the ol' codger provoked me to download Beatnik, sooner than I intended, for examination and its potential use (TDR, if you are listening, -- I think he deserves an honorary commission :-P ). And for those of you that have already explored the alternative hallowed halls, excuse my journalistic endeavor. For those of you that haven't... JUST DO IT! electrix RThur...it is the same Frank...with a.... let's just say, "warped-out-dated-yet-friendly" sense of humor. If you ever want to know the history of "good" music...knock at is mailbox. He will unfold the mysteries of the '30s, '40,s and '50s for you. ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V2 #201 ***************************
