I sure that song has appeared on hundreds of compilations around the world. Of course, I'm sure TMDR is happy to see that song is still bringing him some $$$. (Though not as much as before I'm sure) Oh, and speaking of 80's, if you have VH1, set your TVs and VCRs to that channel from August 17-24 for the "8 Days of 80s" special. All 80s videos, songs and interviews [including a "Where Are They Now?" show that will be feature such 80s artists as Howard Jones, Mike Score (A Flock of Seagulls) and others]. It's suppose to be hosted by Huey Lewis and Daryl Hall. Maybe we'll see TMDR somewhere in there... (or see SBMWS for the bazillionth time...) Hi y'all, Over the last couple of days I've been having a chat with our intrepid hero's manager, Ms. Mary Coller. She's been kind enough to give me some really good advice on a couple of things we've been talking about here. One thing that's come to light is that while both the B'day tape and shirt projects are really singing along (pun not intended) and they're 'internal use only', we do need to pay attention to respecting the rights and wishes of the creators/rights holders of the works we're going to be deriving the shirt and the tape from. I know the last thing on your minds is to tread on anyone's toes and I feel confident that everyone here has nothing but the best of intentions in these respects. So, if we're going to it, let's do it right. Firstly, regarding the tape. Mary's been able to confirm that we're in the clear on this one rights-wise /providing/ we don't sell it. Secondly, regarding the shirt, if we use the 'science' image - or any other copyrighted image for that matter, we'll need to get permission to use it from the original source of the image. This may involve some licensing arrangement but let's come to that when we come to it eh? It shouldn't be difficult, but it's a detail that does need to be taken care of before we let Karen do her thing. cheers, Paul. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Aug 97 01:16:37 +1000 From: Paul Baily Subject: Alloy: Armaggedon - how to. (Benevolent omnipotent entities willing, I'm talking the Gate track here. :) Hi y'all, A few days back I indulged the little kid in me and bought a Sony Playstation. I've always liked video games (I admit it: I'm a Daytona junkie :) and have a fair CD library for my Mac here but I've never admitted it enough to buy dedicated hardware for the cause. I've had the chance to play a few playstation games now and they're mindblowing in their intricacy presentation-wise. It's a bit sad when one of the components of your AV system has a faster processor than your main computer! Okay, okay, here's the point. One game I've tried (and subsequently become addicted to) is called Wipeout 2097. It's basically a race of specialised vehicles down a series of futuristic channels and tunnels. As the 2097 suggests, it's set in that year; civilisation has crumbled to the point of near anarchy: high technology, but grimy, and low on all the human graces. Very Bladerunner-ish. Sound familiar? Anyway, if you get the chance, play it, or at least have a look at the opening animation. Then go watch your Gate To The Minds Eye vid (you /have/ all bought a copy, yes? :) and pay attention to the Armaggedon clip, especially the chase sequences. The similarity is uncanny! For an even bigger spinout, I tried playing it while listening to that track - I highly recommend it! cheers, Paul. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 08 Aug 1997 17:18:07 +0100 From: Lem Bingley Subject: Re: Alloy: Armaggedon - how to. I've only seen the Gate video once (on PBS in a hotel room in Seattle) but I'm 99.9% certain that the sequence you're talking about was originally generated as graphics for one of those immersive 3-D simulator rides (kind of like the Back to the Future ride at Universal stuidos). In fact I'm pretty sure that the graphics can be seen doing their original job on a ride called 'The Imaginator' at the Trocadero in London's Picadilly Circus. Well, I'm still compiling tour cities, although it sounds like the shirt image/copyright situation may be the straw that breaks Joe Camel's back. Do we still have sufficient motivation/interested numbers to go through with the t-shirt thing? I'm just curious. We seem to have a real ebb and flow with the dynamics and participation of the children of the Alloy nation (which is probably a good thing, as I hope it reflects the existence of real lives out there!), and I'd hate to see Miles or anyone else going to great trouble if there aren't enough interested bodies to really do this. On the city front... still haven't heard from some of the regulars, like Crackers or Deputy Fearless Leader Paul (ahem.) ARMAGEDDON ( & the whole GATE soundtrack actually) is even more fun to listen to LOUD through headphones while grinding your violin making tools or your ice skate blades, or whatever you may have worth grinding. Sparks fly and everything, it's a very sensual experience. TRY IT!
