In other words, putting whip cream on BS. I started listening to TMDR when Blinded came out on MTV, and then learned that there was much more depth to his music than ever expected. I now collect TMDR items. Some of the more interesting item are from his early days like a record when he was with the Fallout Club, and the Europa & the Pirate twins 12" single with Therapy/Growth. And posters from all albums except Astronauts. Other musical interests include Pet Shop Boys, Propaganda, Prefab Sprout, Art of Noise, New Order, etc. And Lee...if you have read this far, I was also in Drum & Bugle Corps. It's a nocturnal marsupial which grows to about the size of a small-medium sized dog. Despite their size they have incredibly strong jaws which can break bones with a single bite and can be somewhat aggressive. They make a horrible grunting/screaming/barking noise at night. They do not spin around at high speed devouring trees as they go (well I've never seen it but there have been rumours..). They do NOT make good pets!! Also I missed two things off my bio. 1/ Born: Lancashire, England. 2/ Dolby: After seeing a video clip of 'Europa and the Pirate Twins' on tv I went out and bought the single, followed by the EP. 'The Golden Age of Wireless' wasn't released locally for a month or so after that, but when it was I went out and bought that. What an incredibly album! (and still a favourite of mine to this day). Of course following that I was hooked and bought 'The Flat Earth', 'Aliens Ate My Buick' and so on throught to my first TMDR CD 'Retrospectacle'. I also bought the EP version of 'She Blinded Me With Science' (although I never really liked it much) and picked up an EP of 'The Cube' (which I hadn't heard of - but bought anyway). In fact i've never heard 'The Cube' played on radio anywhere to this day. I also got hold of Ryuichi Sakamoto's 'Musical Encyclopedia' (or whatever it's called) because I liked 'Field Work' so much. And thats it. We used to have to march, at certain points in the parades or competitions, in front of the snare drummers so they could "ride" the cymbals.... ....So one day we're in the U.S. (Michigan or Ohio, I can't remember which it was, it was in '79), and this kid (who was the corps directors son) is following me around yelling "where were you at the last practise" and "you're such a slacker, I should have my dad kick you out of the corps". Needless to say this kid is pissing me off! So then we are in the parade and we're marching over this bridge and when we get to the very centre we were supposed to go around to meet the snare drummers. Then just as we are quick stepping around to that point this kid (Mark was his name-I believe) falls flat on his face when his untied shoe-lace got caught in the grate of this bridge (which was a drawbridge of sorts I guess). So There I was, in front of ten mirthfull snare drummers (3 of which were Mark's brothers) holding up 2 cymbals for all ten as the rest of the corps were stepping over and around him shouting "get up Mark, quit Slacking Mark, We should have your dad kick you out of the corp Mark" and that day was when I first discovered the true meaning of Nemesis!! BTW- the corps name was the "Bluewater Buccaneers"---->(another short one for you..... my dad used to say "hey Ian wheres your Buccaneers?" to which I'd reply "under me buccan hat!") - ---Ian Gifford (flirp/folkie) mailto:giffordstrasser@oiart.org =^.^= ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Jun 1997 11:59:08 -0400 (EDT) From: crackers@hwcn.org Subject: Alloy: A birthday present for Mr. Dolby Hey gang, this is something we discussed on the Tap Room, but now that it's a mere shell of it's former self, it might be better to discuss this here. Thomas's birthday is in October, I believe, and we were discussing the possibility of getting him a birthday present. And of course it's very true that the most special gifts of all are the ones you make yourself from the heart. Mr. Dolby's music seems to attract a lot of very creative people and a large percentage of his fans are musicians therefore we thought that perhaps it would be a good idea for each of the musicians in the FES to record a cover of one of Mr. Dolby's tunes. We would then send a cassette of our cover to someone in the FES who would assemble all the covers together on a single cassette album which would be sent in to Mr. Dolby. As well for the non-musically talented, FES members, they could submit either artwork inspired by Mr. Dolby's music or poetry/prose inspired by his music to be included in the cassette's J-Card, or even just home-made birthday cards. These would be sent to someone else in the FES who is experienced in graphic design (and has a colour printer of good quality) would would then put together the J-Card. The artwork can be submitted as scaned GIFs via E-mail. When the whole project is put together it would be sent to Mr. Dolby in October as a birthday gift to show him how much he and his music means to all of his faithful fans. Now, for those who contribute to this birthday project and would like to get a copy of the cassette, they could send in a cassette with return postage to whoever is assembling the final project and get a copy sent back (the musicians sending in music on tape could just include return postage and specify that they'd like a copy of the album returned on the cassette they submitted). Now the people who have the hardest job in all this would be the person who assembles the songs into an album and the person who assembles the J-card (and if they turn out to be the same person... Oi!). I think that was where the project got bogged down last year, finding such talented, creative people who would have the time for such a project (we had no shortage of musicians wishing to contribute). But perhaps here on the Alloy list we'll have better. luck. Anyways. What do you think of this idea? Any takers? Oh.... and by the way.... I CALL DIBS ON "NUVOGUE"!!!!! I performed a cover of this song last night at a local pub (on accordion no less) and the crowd went NUTS over it (they loved doing the "Eye eye eye eye" bits) CRACKERS (Sounds like a plan from hell!!!) - -- Accordionist - Wethifl Musician - Atari 2600 Collector | /\/\ *NEW CrAB URL* http://www.hwcn.org/~ad329/crab.html ***| \^^/ Bira Bira Devotee - FES Member - Samurai Pizza Cats Fan| =\/= ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Jun 1997 11:59:07 -0400 (EDT) From: crackers@hwcn.org Subject: Re: Alloy: Whoa, what a backlog. What a shock! (my fave is >Mercury as well) ;) Not my favourite anime though. ~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~ I have a 5" PVC Sailor Mercury on a stand on the top of my monitor. But I wasn't pleased with the way in which it was painted at the factory so I hand painted it myself to make it look more realistic. Of course, luckily I have many outside interests that occupy my time because otherwise repainting a figurine would probably come close to qualifing me as an Otaku (Watashi wa otaku dewa arimasen yo.)... actually, after seeing documentaries on Otaku, it wouldn't even come close. However, there's a picture of Ami-chan on my monitor, as well as my phone. My accordion case is covered with Sailor Moon, Samurai Pizza Cats, and Gatchaman stickers. Not to mention a little Sailor Mercury figure on a key chain on the handle. But I'd still say I'd have to worry more about being an Atari 2600 otaku than an anime otaku. Speaking of Gatchaman (or Battle Of The Planets, G-Force, and currently Eagle Riders as it is known in North America) I currently if a subtitled Gatchaman Movie and a couple of episodes of Battle Of The Planets on tape. It's hilarious watching that old show that I LOVED as a kid. It was really so cheasy and the translation is so.... creative. Iw ould have paid anything to see Zoltar standing over top of a dismantled 7-Zark-7, gleefully ripping out his circuits and wires. Back on the subject of Sailor scouts... I haven't seen any of the later series where they being in the outer senshi (Neptune and Uranus (the lesbian scouts), Pluto, and of course Saturn (the Deathbunny Scout)). And I won't count Chibi-Moon because so far I've only seen her as "Reenie". But from what I've seen so far, my least favorite scout would have to be Venus. She just doesn't do much for me. Ami is my favorite because she's the smartest and I go weak in the knees over an intellegent female. (if I was going on purely physical looks then Jupiter would be the hands down winner... she's got legs that go all the way up... whatever that means) CRACKERS (not an otaku from hell!!!!!!) - -- Accordionist - Wethifl Musician - Atari 2600 Collector | /\/\ *NEW CrAB URL* http://www.hwcn.org/~ad329/crab.html ***| \^^/ Bira Bira Devotee - FES Member - Samurai Pizza Cats Fan| =\/= ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Jun 1997 12:03:33 -0400 From: Ian &/or Heidi Subject: Re: Alloy: Whoa, what a backlog. ASHLEY MACISAAC!!!! Wow! I didn't think anyone who wasn't a canuck would be into Ashley! He's a sort of Young Canadian hero these days! I just had to respond when I read this! This excites me! Being a Canadian musician, we have this sort of loathing for U.S. record companies because most people believe that the U.S. companies choose to ignore Can-bands and artists while we push their stuff quite heavily! It's also next to impossible for Canadian bands to tour the U.S. extensively due to customs laws and paperwork etc., etc., blah, blah, blah! Personally I don't think it's all that bad but you read this kind of stuff in Canadian rock mags and papers almost every week! Like "why can't the U.S. open it's arms to the Tragically Hip?" etc. So yes I do get a warm feeling in my heart for any mention of a Canadian artist (is that silly? :^) - -- - ---Ian Gifford (flirp/folkie) mailto:giffordstrasser@oiart.org =^.^= ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Jun 1997 12:12:51 -0400 From: Ian &/or Heidi Subject: Re: Alloy: Re: alloy-digest V2 #125 Neil Leacy wrote: > > Subject: Re: Alloy: new Alloy introductions > > >RThurF@aol.com wrote: > >> > > >> and a quick NEWS FLASH before Dave needs the computer: I just found > >>out that > >>Gerald Scarfe, who is one of my all-time favorite illustrators (he did > >>the > >>animation for Pink Floyd's The Wall) designed all the characters for > >>the new > >>Disney movie Hercules! I don't know what song I'll do yet but I would like to offer my services for the editing and compilation! I have access to "Pro-tools" and "sound designer" software so I could load all the submissions into the Computer and edit them digitally and try to extract any cassette noise that may occur as well as doing a sort of master! Also I can except DAT's or ADAT Tapes or DA-88 tapes should anyone need their song mixed! I can also burn CD's at my school for $35 each (canadian funds and that's at my alumni discount!!) Lemme know how I can be of service to Y'all. great idea Crackers - -- - ---Ian Gifford (flirp/folkie from hell?) ;^) mailto:giffordstrasser@oiart.org =^.^= ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V2 #126 ***************************
