Oh what a web we do weave when first we practice to enter the www. No rhyme, but you get the gist. When I download it's by guess and by God. I don't think the instructions are written for a newcomer. And I am discovering that plug-ins don't work with all browsers. Crescendo was part of Netscape Navigator 3.? It is not necessarily so for Communicator which includes an update for Navigator. Microsoft Internet Explorer is not a suite but Communicator is. Why was I lead to believe that Communicator would cost me around $49.00 more but I was able to download it for free? And the confusion continues (and the beat goes on). Do I have any of the above properly understood? Sort of humor this old duffer. OK youngster? I am quickly discovering the everyone is younger than I am. Ha! You know what bugs me? A computer generated dialogue that states everything but the obvious. "Hey, jerk you're not connected to your server". How many times I am crestfallen only to discover that the solution is that simple. Just connect with the Server and then email and the web are yours for the taking. So often I just don't see the obvious. Thanks for clearing up this color palette thing. I'm now in high gear. I (an adult) especially like "Roll Back the Rock (To The Dawn of Time)" on the "We're Back" soundtrack (separate versions sung by John Goodman and Little Richard). It's quite a snappy tune I think kids and adults will like. Adele Bertei from "The Flat Earth" album sings background vocals on this track too. "Roll back the rock (roll back the rock) Turn back the clock (turn back the clock) Roll back the rock to the dawn of time, And sing this song with me." Oh yeah, you mentioned Raffi. Other physical stats: blond hair, green eyes, 170cm, and about 65-70kg (Imperial? Hey /you/ do the maths for a change! :-) Nationality: Depends. Queh?: Depends what passport I'm carrying at the time. : Okay okay, born in Wellington NZ, spent the last 10 years in Australia, had to get Aust citizenship for a security clearance while working for a defence contractor (but would have anyway, it's a great country!) so have joint Aust/NZ citizenship. So you're...: An Aussie. But that can change depending on who's winning the cricket really. (John, I'm _kidding_!! :-) So, tell me about your childhood: Well not much to tell really, born in Wellington, NZ, but grew up in Dunedin (NZ), LA (US), Sussex (UK), P'welli (Wales), Auckland (NZ), Wanganui (NZ), Adelaide (Aust), Sydney (Aust), Brisbane (Aust) ...hmm, y'know that could explain my weird accent. Aussies can't pick I'm an ex-pat kiwi (you can usually pick one a mile off), I've also been accused of being either Canadian or American. No offense, really. :-) Marital status: Single. Engaged once, deeply smitten a few times, but single. Occupation: Consulting Systems Engineer/IT contractor - I work in the computer industry. Sorry to hear that: Thanks. It's nothing counselling couldn't fix. Favourite/fortuitous number: Five. Why? Well I just thought I'd ask: Oh, okay then. Favourite cartoon: Roadrunner. Forgive me for forsaking the more sophisticated ones, but it's a real simple concept done really funnily. I grew up with it and I still get a giggle out of it. Everyone has to be a child once in a while. Favourite book: Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. Most valued possession: Friendship. Not that it's a possession, but I think it's the most valuable thing one could ever hope to have. Favourite pastime: Looking at anything that doesn't have a scan rate, listening to good music, Saturday & Sunday morning coffees at a local cafe with my best friend Jan, curling up on the sofa on rainy afternoons with a good book and a nice glass of red, cooking, being in the company of good people, cooking for said good people, trying to truly appreciate what or who is around me. Hmm, pretty deep for this time of night: Sorry. Favourite drink: anything, provided it's in the company of good friends. Toohey's Dry (Beer), Hahn Premiem (Beer), Crown Lager (beer), Fosters (beer kinda), beers from various microbreweries visited with the one and only Europa about a year back, or bourbon, depending on how fast I want the anaesthetic to hit I guess. :-) Also having a bit of a bent on some Australian red wines these days. Favourite musical instrument: Saxophone. It just exudes expression and sensuality. Cello is a close second. Excuse the cliche but I just love hearing Four Seasons played live by a string quartet. Played well, it brings a tear to the eye. Favourite musical instrument that you can play: Acoustic guitar, with piano a close second...though whether I can play them is a matter of interpretation! Biggest claim to fame: having the same hairdresser as the guys from Savage Garden. (Well it was the best I could come up with at such short notice. :-) What music do you listen to (apart from Thomas Dolby of course): Well, it varies, but these days I'm listening to: Blue Nile, K's Choice, Everything But The Girl, Icehouse, Midnight Oil, R.E.M., Vertigo, Psychedelic Furs, The The, Depeche Mode, Enigma, The Smiths, U2, Seal, Daryl Braithwaite, The Cure, Police, Peter Gabriel, Simple Minds, etc. Favourite Dolby CD: Tricky since it depends on state of mind. I'd have to say The Flat Earth. Favourite Dolby track: No comment. Hey that's a bit rude: Sorry, just can't pick one. A lot of them are special for different reasons. If you became Miss Universe, what would you wish to change in the world: Hey, um, I think you're reading from the wrong questions. Oh, sorry: 'sokay. There's nothing more that I like to wrap my hand around than a bottle of Mackeson Ale. For those of you that haven't tried it, Mackeson's is an English varietal that tastewise is VERY close to Guiness only not as bitter, much thicker in consistency, and with a bit more alcoholic kick. Really a shame that I only know of one place locally where I can get it, and I don't like that restaurant. :( ****** Charles E. Story came out earlier this year -- Dave's Laser Video in North Hollywood should be able to hook you up, and they do rental. Name: Tom Slack Occupation: Technical Writer, Webmeister Non-Paying Occupation: Musician, Songwriter, Producer Residence: Pittsburgh, PA Born: October 2, 1954 (you figure it out) Family: Beautiful Wife, Daughter, Step-Daughter, Dog, 2 Cats (all females!) Dolby: Introduced to the Golden Age of Wireless EP (mentioned recently) during a bizarre El-Nino winter in Orange County, CA in '83. This music sent me into another world, and perfectly encapsulated that period of my life. (I often site my enjoyment of this record as an example of why I think current releases contain too many songs). Moved to NYC that year to write and produce some "new wave dance" tracks that were purchased by Emergency records but never released. These tracks were *very* Dolby-influenced. Jump ahead to '91 when I met my current wife, and we realized that we were both very much into the music of Mr. Dolby, and it further strengthened our bond. We were both very pleasantly surprised when Astronauts and Heretics was released, as we had lost track of what Thomas was doing, and it was such an incredibly excellent release. Didn't mean to drag this on endlessly- just trying to express that the music of Mr. Dolby has been intertwined in my life for a long time. Other Music: XTC (mucho), Robyn Hitchcock, Robbie Robertson, Lloyd Cole, Indigo Girls, Beatles, Matthew Sweet, The Story, Richard Thompson, Suzanne Vega What I'd Like to Get Around To: I have a bunch of songs that I've recorded in my home 8-track studio that I'm trying to figure out what to do with. I'm associated with some A/R types in LA, but they just keep wanting to tell me how to re-write my material. Am considering the notion being pioneered by Mr. Dolby of just putting them on the Web. OK, enough about me. Wanted to mention that I ended up in a small town on the northern coast of Spain last month called Tossa de Mar - beautiful little town, very old, with alley-like streets, a huge castle, and very scenic shoreline dotted with outdoor cafes- the kind of place where I would probably rent a villa for a few months if I were commissioned to write a novel. Anyway, walking past a record store, I glanced over the rack that they had outside in front of the store, the kind of rack where you would normally put new releases (at least in America), and there in the middle of all of these cassettes was a copy of The Flat Earth! Nice to know Thomas is popular in places that most of us wouldn't even know existed. No way could I explain... I think a game for women ought to involve shoe buying and if you are successful in finding your size on sale, you automatically lose 10 pounds without even trying! Personally, the game I used to play most often when I had access to a computer at home (thanks to my best friend) was Shanghai because the colors were so pretty. I am such a girl!
