Hi Everyone, I just moved from Salt Lake City, Utah to Denver Colorado. Are there any fellow Alloy's in Denver, or am I the only inter-mountain west Alloy representative? If anyone else on this list is in Denver, write me, we can have a few microbrews in LoDo. Now for some Dolby business: Before I left Salt Lake City, Utah, I went into Modified-Music, a really good source for difficult to find CD's. Some of the Dolby singles that Neil referenced in his posting were there. Here's the store information in case anyone wishes to contact them: Modified Music Salt Lake City, Utah Store Hours: Monday - Friday 11:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. (Mountain Time) Saturday 11:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Telephone: 801-355-1770. http://www.modified-music.com <--- this wasn't working last time I tried, but you can give it a shot. Cheers! Keith Stansell Denver, CO ________________________________________________ http://www.concentric.net/~kasman PS: Thanks for the virtual trip Melissa. Your writing paints a picture of Russia that most people would never know. Your anger and frustration over the old lady you met is very thought provoking and yet your enjoyment joining in with the buskers came across really well. And you did keep a TMDR link with the mention of "Retrospecticle" - which I've just found out had been deleted in the UK (the unkindest musical cut of all). Hi y'all, If I may I'd like to make a plea for your assistance on behalf of someone who doesn't get nearly enough credit for what he silently provides us. First, if you'll humour me, a little history. Alloy first started on 2 Feb 1996. I started it because the original dolby-list residing at Kaleidospace (I'd only just found it) had closed down, but the official FES list wasn't an open list yet. I thought that unless something was done quickly, these people that had formed a close association through a common bond would slowly drift off in different directions. Since it was intended to be temporary in nature (hence the name), Alloy started out as a manually run list. By that I mean people had to send me their messages and I'd get my emailer to forward copies of the message to everyone else individually. It hammered the &^%! out of my email program, and my ISP's DNS & mail server. (Tip o' the hat to Claris Corporation for Emailer which handled the load admirably!) It took a while though and meant that messages had to wait until I went and checked my mail which I tried to do at least twice a day. It was a tad costly in terms of time and phone bills but very, very rewarding because I got to feel I played a small part in bringing you all together. In May of 96, a gentleman by the name of Jeff Wasilko (one of our silent subscribers who's an avid Dolby fan) approached me and offered Alloy a home on his listserver at smoe.org. Alloy was born for real. I should point out here that Jeff wasn't just offering the services of some monolithic corporation's battery-hen unix box hidden in a cleanroom somewhere. The machine that makes Alloy what it is today is run purely at Jeff's personal cost. You're probably thinking 'this is all very warm & fuzzy Paul, but what are you hogging bandwidth (again) for?' Okay, let me cut to the chase. Jeff needs our help. One of the main hard disks on the server that runs Alloy has died an untimely death. They're currently running with the standby disk. The last time this happened, one of our sister lists, Jewel, that also runs on smoe, ran a collection of it's members and came up with the money to replace the disk. So how about we return the favour? Jeff estimates the cost of a replacement disk to be about US$400. I'm already sending US$50 to him, any chance any of you could help further? If so, please do get in touch with Jeff at . In fact, even if you can't spare money for the cause (and that's quite understandable: my operating account's usually in the red too! :-) please think about sending Jeff a thank you note anyway for giving us a home here at smoe.org. The guy does his best to avoid the spotlight but he really does deserve a round of applause! thanks for your time, stay well, Paul. ________________________________________________________________________ Paul Baily paulb@thehub.com.au Consulting SE/IT Mercenary http://www.thehub.com.au/~paulb Brisbane tel: +61-7-3857-8048/+61-411-875-009 Australia There is a spirit here that won't be broken. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Jun 1997 23:30:56 BST From: the copse Subject: Alloy: Heeeeeeeeeeere's.............. the_copse Hi everybody, I'm not sure exactly how many people on this particular list know me already, but here I am anyway. Thanks, Keith, for this information. > http://www.modified-music.com <--- this wasn't working last time I > tried, but you can give it a shot. The web site works, but I couldn't find any reference to TMDR on it; so I called them up. As of today, they have: Close But No Cigar Pt. 2 $10.95 Quantum Mechanic $10.95 Silk Pyjamas Pt. 1 $11.95 Silk Pyjamas Pt. 2 $10.95 I Love You Goodbye Pt. 1 $10.95 I Love You Goodbye Pt. 2 $16.95 These are all new imports from Europe, according the sales clerk. > > Brian Clayton - Part 1 of Close But No Cigar cd set > > Part 1/2 of Silk Pyjamas cd set > > Part 1/2 of Hyperactive cd set I'm going to order the Silk Pyjamas set myself. I also asked to be added to their notify list (snailmail and email) so when the other items I asked about come in, I'll be contacted. Anyone else looking for such items should do the same. > > Mary (Europa) Brown - > > Part 1/2 of I Love You Goodbye cd set > > Part 1 of Close But No Cigar cd set > > Anything from Aliens Ate My Buick Mary, here's your chance for ILYG, but we'll both have to wait for CBNC Pt. 1! As always, but especially since you've been giving us the play-by-play on your current trip. I had a baby in February. Prior to becoming pregnant, I was always one of those people who never cried.. never felt the urge. I was always told that I was "un-chick-like." As my pregnancy progressed, I found myself crying at the slightest little thing -- and I always assumed it was "just hormones" and a passing thing. I now feel (or fear?) that I've been changed permanently by the experience: I cry at all kinds of things, even though I stopped being pregnant almost five months ago. Anyway, to make a point the long way.. must be the combination of my new outlook on life and the way you write, but I've teared up twice this week. Reading your post, and on Friday when they sentenced the convicted terrorist McVeigh to death. (Driving out here to CA from the east coast last summer, we stopped at the Murrah building site. The most hardened person couldn't stand there without at least a lump in his throat -- I cried very easily.) Anyway, keep letting us know what it's like there. I don't see myself ever visiting a place like that, and I look forward to reading about your experiences. On Thu, 12 Jun 1997, Melissa Jordan wrote: > P.S.
