Yes, it's just you, everything is just fine here ..... only kidding. Yes, as Croydon predicted, it's fallen over again, and it's no surprise really, as there were so many threads. I've mailed Netrex to ask them to feed the hamster, so now we'll just have to wait and see. Ah, you see - therein lies the problem: so many threads, but only ONE hamster... (And the life expectancy of a single hamster just ain't all that long...) Ok, Paul usually starts these things, but I thought I'd relieve him of his duties this time around and see if I can't start some discussion. Lets just say that a bunch of musicians decided that it is time that TMDR got much deserved credit for being a great songwriter and decided to do a tribute album with proceeds going to the charity of TMDR's choice. The album would have other musicians doing TMDR's songs. Who would you like to hear, doing which Dolby songs? What charity do you thing TMDR would like the proceeds to go to? I'll post my choices later because I haven't thought them up yet. It'd be a nice self-efacing comment on the comment of the song. Okay here goes: Sting - Valley of the Mind's Eye (good crooning material! Although Lee's pick of Billy Joel sounds good, maybe an acoustic version with Eric Clapton on guitar?) Faith No More - Pulp Culture and/or Key To Her Ferrari (maybe a mix of the two? Also think these guys could do a killer mix of May The Cube Be With You) R.E.M. - Flying North (it'd be interesting to hear how this sounds with a little more guitar edge) Marc Almond/Depeche Mode - Flying North reprise (think Enjoy the Silence from Violator) Paul Buchanan or Blue Nile - The Flat Earth (if you've heard Stay from A Walk Across the Rooftops, you'll know what I'm getting at) Peter Gabriel - Screen Kiss Bono/U2 - Neon Sisters (This is a song that would have to be handled delicately to do it justice - I'm thinking of their Unforgettable Fire sound here) K's Choice - Cruel Power of Seven - Big Bang Backwards? Track 2 from the Gate. (I've only ever heard these guys do instrumental content but they do it very well) Elastica - White City (you never know, it could just work :-) Concrete Blonde - New Toy (slow it down a bit and I think Jeanette Napolitano's (sp?) sultry voice could add a whole new smouldering light to it) ...and of course, the final track: Thomas Dolby - I Love You Goodbye (There is no substitute. 'nuff said.) >What charity do you thing TMDR would like the proceeds to go to? Um, the Society of Starving Hyperactive Astrophysicists and Xenobiologists (Rocket Scientists 'r' Us)? stay well, Paul. __________________________________________________________________________ Paul Baily paulb@thehub.com.au Consulting SE/IT Mercenary http://www.thehub.com.au/~paulb Brisbane, Australia There is a spirit here that won't be broken ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Feb 1997 18:08:26 -0800 (PST) From: Brian Clayton Subject: Re: Alloy: Dolby Tribute Album On Tue, 11 Feb 1997, Keith Stansell wrote: > Who would you like to hear, doing which Dolby songs? Retreading the 'collaboration idea' list, I'd like to see The Bobs do something like 'Pulp Culture' or 'Puppet Theater'. I like the Billy Joel / Valley suggestion, as well as the notion of They Might Be Giants doing their spin on a couple of TD favorites. 'Windpower' by Kate Bush, as a counterpoint to her 'Cloudbusting', perhaps? And of course, 'I Scare Myself' by Dan Hicks. **WHACK** Ow!
