[Hi y'all, I know many of you will be heading home for the holidays so I thought I'd send this out now so you hopefully get it before you go. PB] - ----- It's an especially crisp, clear, starry night outside the hallowed Society clubrooms. Inside, however, the temperature - and atmosphere - is much warmer, thanks to the open fire burning heartily, and the heavy curtains that were closed just after the sun retreated below the horizon (as they customarily are before dinner.) The drawing room is also warmed by the presence and relaxed rapport of the Society's members reclining on the dignified yet accomodating Chesterfield furniture. Some recounting their opinions on the finer nuances of our Founder's works or speculating on future works, while others are content to nod sagely and gaze thoughtfully into the fire's embers or at the austere oil paintings adorning the walls. I look around the room and with a touch of pride, note that we have such a rich variety of Society members: people from every corner of this flat Earth: every age, every background, and every vocation, but with an overriding commonality. Yes, there is indeed a spirit here that won't be broken. At a pause in the conversation, I get up from my chair, refill my glass from the small bar in the corner and wander over to lean against the mantlepiece as is our custom when addressing the group. I take a sip of my red wine - a '95 Cabernet Merlot from Tyrrells winery, New South Wales, Australia - and clear my throat... "Ladies and gentlemen, if I may, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your tremendous support throughout the year and for making Alloy go from one crazed person's idea to what it is today. It's been really good getting to know you bit by bit. I'd also like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! For those of you travelling over the holidays to be with family or loved ones, please, PLEASE do so carefully. Let's see you back here next year in one piece." "For those of you spending Christmas alone (as am I) please remember, Alloy and the clubrooms are always open to you." After a short pause, I return to my chair and continue gazing into the flames. Other conversations resume... - ---- stay well, Paul. ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V1 #97 **************************
