Hi y'all, Well fair's fair, guess I should have a go at answering these...while waiting for TMDR, Clif and co. to finish their answers. ;-) >1. If you had to live on a dessert island (or a crisp mountain hideaway) >for six months which ten (10) Thomas Dolby tracks would you want to take >along on MiniDisc with you? (Someone would provide the MD player, don't >worry :-) This can be particular mixes, from videos, live, whatever. Okay, here they are be gentle! 10. Moonbase - hey I'm a sci-fi fan, what did you expect? :-) Seriously, I don't know why but it has a real sense of optimism over adversity to me, besides I _love_ the video! 9. Flying North 8. My Brain Is Like A Sieve (simply beautiful) 7. Europa And The Pirate Twins 6. I Scare Myself 5. The Flat Earth 4. Eastern Bloc (for the volume-craving Van Halen guitarwork and the continuing story) 3. Valley Of The Mind's Eye (seldom is romance expressed so eloquently) 2. Budapest by Blimp (On the corners of boulevardes, I call your name...) 1. I Love You Goodbye (need you ask?) >2. If TMDR were to produce a rarities CD, what do you think would be a >good name for it? 1. Oh, you're not there either [:-)] 2. Alphanumerals 3. Of Dirty Datsuns And Everglades ...I really liked Retroactive! myself. >3. Let's say our intrepid Hero was going to do a tour (to promote the >rarities CD? ;-) - one catch: he wants *YOU* to pick the playlist! Go >ahead, line 'em up, but much though we think he's not, the guy is mortal >so don't go picking the entire discography now... Europa and The Pirate Twins Radio Silence Flying North I Live in a Suitcase Windpower It's Probably Me (cover of that excellent Sting[?] song- okay so TMDR hasn't done it yet but just think how well he'd do it considering how he transformed I Scare Myself) The Flat Earth Budapest by Blimp White City Eastern Bloc I Love You Goodbye ...of course the following are assuming the audience have a pulse and have responded! encore 1: New Toy encore 2: Hyperactive! encore 3: May The Cube Be With You (half a million people, such a sight to see...) >4. You probably know what your all-time favourite Dolby track is. Which >one do you think Thomas' is? ...and if possible, why? I'd say like every one of us, TMDR's fave would vary on the day - especially since a performer would have to virtually live each song when they're doing it - but I Love You Goodbye would be my pick. >5. You wander into your favourite cafe for a quiet latte (or if in >California, a doublecafdecafcapwithhalfskimmilkandatwistoflemon) and you >stop dead in your tracks, rub your eyes to make sure: no, it can't be, it >IS! "Hey Thomas, when are you going to respond to my emails!?" :-) Seriously, I'd be trying to spend all my time listening, not talking (nay, chattering nervously! :-). >6. We know Thomas has had Eddie Van Halen as a neighbour. Going by his >musical style, who else would you say Thomas has been neighbours with? In >other words, who do you think may have influenced his work - these can be >as obvious or as obscure as you like. Um, I think others have answered this question much better than I could (hey I'm allowed to cop out on /one/ question aren't I?) stay well, Paul. ________________________________________________________________________ Paul Baily paulb@powerup.com.au Consulting SE/IT gun for hire http://www.powerup.com.au/~paulb/ Brisbane, Australia There is a spirit here that won't be broken. ------------------------------ From: Brian Clayton Date: Mon, 11 Nov 1996 11:58:58 -0800 (PST) Subject: Re: Alloy: The Flat Earth Society- old news to some, new to me On Sun, 10 Nov 1996, Monya De wrote: > Hmm...that looks a bit familiar :) > That article was actually on the FES website for a while--it's not still > there is it guys?? Gotta be I Love You Goodbye! It really seems to have struck a chord (ouch!) in the Alloy subscribers and I agree completely with Monya - every part of it just fits together so well. And considering I listened to bayou rain this summer with a prominent Alloy member by my side, it's my favorite too. > When he says he's > heard your name somewhere before, Jeez, I would hope he still remembers me! Jokingly! What are you talking about?? I must have read Melissa's post too quickly. How funny would that be, girls, the three of us backing up TMDR? Hey, I know the background to The Flat Earth by heart :) Monya ------------------------------ From: Keith Stansell Date: Mon, 11 Nov 1996 22:32:55 -0700 Subject: Re: Alloy: The new rarities CD - whachafink? I feel bad, I'm the 100th member of this list and I've hardly written a word. I take and take and never give, so here goes my contribution: Paul Baily wrote: > 1. If you had to live on a dessert ...which ten (10) Thomas Dolby tracks would you want to take long on MiniDisc with you? I travel often, and I usually prefer to take The Flat Earth, and A&H with me, however, since I have to take a solar powered MD player and one disc with me, here goes: 1. Airwaves (I enjoy singing along with this one) 2. Cloudburst At Shingle Street (for those dry island days) 3. Screen Kiss (Soothing) 4. I Scare Myself (I like the guitar in this one) 5. My Brain Is Like a Sieve (Another sing along song) 6. Budapest by Blimp (I have just always liked this one) 7. I Love You, Goodbye (I'm from Louisiana, and our Sheriff really did have a hair-lip) 8. Silk Pyjamas (Fun - I like the mental images I get from this song) 9. I Live In A Suitcase (I just about do) 10. Quantum Mechanic (You just got to dance sometimes) > 2. If TMDR were to produce a rarities CD, what do you think would be a > good name for it? 1. Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop (Oh wait, Stone Temple Pilots are using that) 2. Field Work 3. Tiny Insects In The Palm Of History > 3. Let's say our intrepid Hero was going to do a tour (to promote the > rarities CD? ;-) - one catch: he wants *YOU* to pick the playlist!... 1. Hyperactive! (start the show with a bang) 2. Europa and the Pirate Twins (keep the momentum) 3. ...Europa changes seamlessly into Eastern Block 4. My Brain Is Like A Sieve (slow down the pace a little) 5. Radio Silence 6. The Wreck of the Fairchild (this is a rarities CD were promoting here after all) 7. Airwaves 8. Silk Pyjamas (get the audience to sing along on this one) 9. Field Work (another rarity) (break) 10. Budapest By Blimp 11. May The Cube Be With You (Perhaps the audience thinks, this the last song?) (break - but no!) 12. She Blinded Me With Science (however, a completely re-worked new version that has Alloy members going "Oh WOW!" and yet satisfying their friends who have only heard this song from TMDR) 13. I Love You, Goodbye (end of show - goodbye!) > 4. You probably know what your all-time favourite Dolby track is. Which > one do you think Thomas' is? ...and if possible, why? Neon Sisters - There is a lot of emotion in that song. > 5. You wander into your favourite cafe for a quiet latte... what do you ask him? 1. So, have you ever been stopped for a speeding ticket in Tensas Parish Louisiana? and if so, did meeting the sheriff there inspire "I Love You-Goodbye?) 2. Will you autograph the jacket of my "Rockula" Laserdisc? I carry it with me always! Actually... 3. When you read the Alloy newsletter, is it difficult resisting the urge to respond to every question about you and your music? and.. 4. Have you been working on any new tracks, I'm dying for a new album?! > 6. We know Thomas has had Eddie Van Halen as a neighbour. Going by his > musical style, who else would you say Thomas has been neighbours with? Robyn Hitchcock (around 1983) Bootsy Collins (around 1988) Well, I've made my contribution for now. Speaking of rarities and contributions, I have a copy of "The Wreck Of The Fairchild" on an early cassette version of TGAOW. I would be willing to post this song on my WWW page in real-audio format if I knew there would be no "copyright" complications from doing so. Any thoughts? Would this get me in big trouble? I'll be gone for about a week, so I'll watch for answers when I get back.
