Hello Alloyds! Well, I guess I'll take the floor for a bit. But first I have a question I always forget to ask; What is the significance of the word "Alloy" (ie - A macroscopically homogeneous mixture or solid solution usually of two or more metals) to the Thomas Dolby list? I'm just curious. Perhaps it means we're all elements of a whole new substance? If it's a blatant lyrical reference, I'm quite embarrassed!! :> 1. If you had to live on a dessert island (or a crisp mountain hideaway) for six months which ten (10) Thomas Dolby tracks would you want to take along on MiniDisc with you? (Someone would provide the MD player, don't worry :-) This can be particular mixes, from videos, live, whatever. The Flat Earth Mulu The Rain Forest Leipzig (since I'm just getting into it) Radio Silence Airwaves Windpower (because I'd be needing that!) (& love the song) Cloudburst At Shingle Street I Live In A Suitcase Beauty Of A Dream Valley of The Mind's Eye 2. If TMDR were to produce a rarities CD, what do you think would be a good name for it? Ideas: "Dolby R" (hmm... quite silly) "Unreleased in Europa" "And... The Other Ones..." "John's Favorite CD" (now I'm getting real silly) (sorry... bad night for ideas, I guess!!) 3. Let's say our intrepid Hero was going to do a tour (to promote the rarities CD? ;-) - one catch: he wants *YOU* to pick the playlist! Go ahead, line 'em up, but much though we think he's not, the guy is mortal so don't go picking the entire discography now... I already did that a while back! There wouldn't be any changes (except final final encore - ILIAS + if I knew of his rarities, they'd be in there too). I'd reprint that dream show, but it's a long e! Most of us have read it already... but I'll send it along to anyone interested. 4. You probably know what your all-time favourite Dolby track is. Which one do you think Thomas' is? ...and if possible, why? Thomas' favorite Dolby track? Geez. My guess would be "Neon Sisters" because it is a very strong dedication to a friend of his, and is a very very very very moving song. But I'm no Thomas, I'm merely a John. (BTW, I didn't mean to rhyme, this time). oh lord.... next question!?!! 5. You wander into your favourite cafe for a quiet latte (or if in California, a doublecafdecafcapwithhalfskimmilkandatwistoflemon) and you stop dead in your tracks, rub your eyes to make sure: no, it can't be, it IS! There! Sitting in the corner! Thomas Dolby in YOUR coffee shop! He looks a little weary (maybe winding down from the Rarites tour?) but nonetheless approachable, so you introduce yourself. When he says he's heard your name somewhere before, you say you're an Alloy subscriber which of course gains you instant credibility (hey who says I can't do plugs!) so you both sit at a table sipping away.... what do you ask him? "Thomas, what the heck am I doing in a cafe? I should be in my basement recording stuff. Wanna come along?" (hey who says I can't dream!) (hee). 6. We know Thomas has had Eddie Van Halen as a neighbour. Going by his musical style, who else would you say Thomas has been neighbours with? In other words, who do you think may have influenced his work - these can be as obvious or as obscure as you like. Andy Partridge, Brian Eno, Paddy McAloon, David Bowie, Bruce Hornsby, Trevor Horn (or was that the other way around!), and Thomas Edison. Well, I gave it my best shot, anyway. (John steps down back to his chesterfield armchair in the Clubroom... gazes at a regal oil painting on the wall, and open fireplace beneath, as the next beloved Flat Earth Society member approaches the floor.....). xxxooo, John Neil ------------------------------ From: Keith Dawe Date: Tue, 5 Nov 1996 23:21:33 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: Alloy: The new rarities CD Okay, here's my answer(s)--but will anyone read them? > 1. I'm not too picky; there'll always be the old standards that he'll play, I'm sure. I'd like to throw in Budapest By Blimp, 'cause that's my favourite. Now, if he were to play at my house, he can play *any* song he wants! :) > 4. You probably know what your all-time favourite Dolby track is. Which > one do you think Thomas' is? ...and if possible, why? Howard the Duck? Seriously, how about Budapest by Blimp? Okay, so it's my favourite--but why not? The song sounds confessional; what he's confessing I'm not quite sure... > 5. There! Sitting in the corner! Thomas Dolby in YOUR coffee shop! He "How's the coffee?" :) Or: "Um, er, um, ah...oh, um, er...I think you're real swell!" Or: "So what was it like being born on a submarine?" ;-) > 6. We know Thomas has had Eddie Van Halen as a neighbour.
