Re: Alloy: The new rarities CD - whachafink? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Paul Baily Date: Mon, 4 Nov 96 22:22:35 +1000 Subject: Alloy: The new rarities CD - whachafink? Hi y'all, Okay, okay, I admit, the subject was a blatant attempt at getting attention. So sue me. :-) While the civilised clubroom of our society with it's tall heavy curtains blocking out the cold night, it's low lighting, it's regal oil paintings, it's welcoming yet respectful chesterfield furniture, and open fireplace are a wonderful setting for reflection, one can gaze silently at the open flames only so long... It's silent times like this that a list owner is tempted to start sending test messages out and checking that the list is going to air. Not this little black duck! To try to get you talking again I thought I'd try something a little different here. Now remember one of the golden rules of Alloy: the only silly question is the one that goes unasked, and (okay so make that two rules) /everyone's/ opinion counts! Okay, I've got some questions for you, and since we're all Dolby fans here EVERYONE should be able to answer them: (don't feel you have to answer all questions. Just whatever grabs you.) TMDR and collaborators (you know who you are!), I'd be particularly chuffed if you could maybe answer some of these - we'd all be really curious to hear it! 1. If you had to live on a dessert island (or a crisp mountain hideaway) for six months which ten (10) Thomas Dolby tracks would you want to take along on MiniDisc with you? (Someone would provide the MD player, don't worry :-) This can be particular mixes, from videos, live, whatever. 2. If TMDR were to produce a rarities CD, what do you think would be a good name for it? 3. Let's say our intrepid Hero was going to do a tour (to promote the rarities CD? ;-) - one catch: he wants *YOU* to pick the playlist! Go ahead, line 'em up, but much though we think he's not, the guy is mortal so don't go picking the entire discography now... 4. You probably know what your all-time favourite Dolby track is. Which one do you think Thomas' is? ...and if possible, why? 5. You wander into your favourite cafe for a quiet latte (or if in California, a doublecafdecafcapwithhalfskimmilkandatwistoflemon) and you stop dead in your tracks, rub your eyes to make sure: no, it can't be, it IS! There! Sitting in the corner! Thomas Dolby in YOUR coffee shop! He looks a little weary (maybe winding down from the Rarites tour?) but nonetheless approachable, so you introduce yourself. When he says he's heard your name somewhere before, you say you're an Alloy subscriber which of course gains you instant credibility (hey who says I can't do plugs!) so you both sit at a table sipping away.... what do you ask him? 6. We know Thomas has had Eddie Van Halen as a neighbour. Going by his musical style, who else would you say Thomas has been neighbours with? In other words, who do you think may have influenced his work - these can be as obvious or as obscure as you like. Well, that's about all I can think of. 6 is a nice round number (not a sharp pointy number like 7) so, ladies and gentlemen, you have the floor. stay well, Paul. ________________________________________________________________________ Paul Baily paulb@powerup.com.au Consulting SE/IT gun for hire Brisbane, Australia There is a spirit here that won't be broken. ------------------------------ From: "Melissa R. I will ponder your list o'questions and offer up my thoughts, gladly - just give me a day or so - I'm fleeing the office early today, to make up for being forced to attend The Meeting From Hell on my birthday last Friday. Thanks for making an effort to keep Alloy lively - while the Tap Room provides a neat outlet, Alloy offers a different forum for communication and creativity. (And, I have to say, after my last post, I no longer wake up with "One of Our Submarines..." in my brain!) Cheers, Melissa - ------------------- Melissa R. How his day has been. I'm a fairly polite person, and would keep the conversation short. If I were feeling gutsy, I'd ask him what the answer to number four. ;-) 6.
