This sounds very familiar Melissa,...I listen to this song almost every time I'm flying these days, especially when homeward, the song has special significance for me, seeing that I live only a couple of hundred miles south of the artic circle, and what is even stranger is the fact that I first "discovered" the TGAOW album when I was in Scandinavia for the first time as a 16-year old, quite a few years back. Perhaps it was a strange augury,...WOW! now his records even predict the future,...is there anything this man can't do ???!!! (ahem,...) S'cuse the outburst,.....I'm always rambling on,....anyways, after flying quite a lot, I've been getting increasingly scared of aerial transport,...so the song has become flying mantra over the last few years for me too.....although I don't find the line about the "useless prayer" going up exactly comforting,..it's at least nice to know someone else has pondered these things. He's wang in the gold again,.... I got it on CD in a Tower Records (the one in Georgetown, DC) last summer and they had another copy as well, so I would think it should be available. Mostly instrumental, with the exception of 'Screamin Lord Byron." It's sort of out of the mainstream for TD, although that phrase doesn't really mean much given his oeuvre, I suupose. I've always liked the "down with the landing gear/up goes the useless prayer" line because it reminds me of my mom, believe it or not. She was a U.S. military pilot in WWII, and she had an experience flying a war-weary P-47 fighter craft into a base for repairs one particularly dark and stormy night. A tremendous rain storm had knocked all the lights out at the airfield, and, when mom tried to put the landing gear down, there was no indication that she'd been successful. She had no idea if she could safely land, and she spent a half-hour flying around the airport, offering up prayers to whomever might be listening, while someone on the ground tried to locate her gear by flashlight. Turns out the gear was down, but, by the time it was noticed, she'd run out of fuel, had to coast in on fumes, and ended up planted in deep mud off the runway. Mom actually told me this story on a long car trip after hearing "Flying North" coming from my boombox in the back seat. She asked me to tape her a copy of the song. Neat. Be careful up there in Northern Lights territory - I understand that Tupolev-154s still occasionally plummet from Russian skies into Scandanavian permafrost! Best off before Tropical Storm Fran knocks my cheesy computer out again. Cheers, Melissa J. - ----------------- Melissa R.
