"Reckless Nights and Turkish Twilights" is a release of most all of the Raymond Scott Quintet's 78s from the 30s and 40s. There exists two other CDs you may with to seek out: "The Raymond Scott Project Vol. One: Powerhouse" on Stash Records. This came out prior to "Reckless Nights" but contains many alternate (usually live) versions of the same pieces, plus a few other tracks. Much of this material was taken from Scott's archive of material in his garage. "Celebration on the Planet Mars: A Tribute to Raymond Scott" is a bit easier to find, I think. It is on Koch Records, and is a collection of newly-recorded Scott classics by the amazing Beau Hunks Sextette--the same group of delightfully nutty Dutch musicians who faithfully re-created not one, but TWO full CDs worth of the music of the Hal Roach "Our Gang/Little Rascals" shorts. His work couldn't be in better hands than with these guys. Finally, to correct the slightly out-dated liner notes that Robin quoted, I'm sad to report that Raymond Scott (nee Harry Warnow) died in February of 1994. I was sad to hear that Raymond Scott had passed on (I was afraid the liner notes might have been out-of-date, but didn't want to admit it to myself!) I'm glad he lived long enough to see how the electronic/computer-based music - which he'd helped nurture in its beggining days - came to blossom in his own time. I've posted here a couple of times as "Alex" and due to change in circumstances I can now do the "polite thing" and properly introduce myself: My names Zoe and I've only recently acquired internet connection at home, until now all my web meanderings have been via college network computers,(never very reliable)but now I'm finally able to get more involved in net "going-on's"! I won't bore y'all to tears with my life story, but the basics are I live in Leicestershire:UK, I'm 18 years old and currently doing a media GNVQ and A-level in photography. I'm a (can I bring myself to admit it?) MASSIVE fan of Duran Duran, and it was while on a Duran hunt in my local vinyl emporium that I stumbled across the "She Blinded Me With Science" 12". I scooped it up along with the pile of Duran 7"s, Japan LPs and Howard Jones 12"s and made my way home. I knew of TMDR from my books on synth artists and had been making a concious effort to seek out his music (which until then had been impossible). I heard the extended mix of "One Of Our Submarines" and was converted. The bottom line: I've never heard anything like Mr Dolby's music and I don't believe I ever shall...so I find myself here. Pleased to meet you... *cuts herself off mid-poetic flow to let the cat out* Zoe xxx (soz for any spelling mistakes, it's way past my bedtime! *grin*) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Dec 1998 19:22:08 -0500 From: Rochelle Kirby <104040.2055@compuserve.com> Subject: Alloy: Mind if I sit here? As for Duran Duran, don't feel you need to hide your enthusiasm for them. I'm 29 and still love their music. If you want to know more about TMDR's music you are definately at the right place. There are SOOO many knowledgable people here. Any question you have is likely to be answered here. BTW, nice to know you've a cat (I've got five...). You are every bit as purely talented. One difference you might be sensing is that you are very adept at accomplishing ten thousand projects in the span of time that most ordinary musicians/composers might do two or three. You may be thinking of the way some musicians are able to devote themselves to just one creative discipline & remain completely enraptured by it for years & years, while it seems to me that just one discipline could never be enough for you. There are so many things you're good at, you can't just pick one, or else all the rest will be stifled. Do you feel as if your talent is somehow being diffused because of this? If so, you shouldn't at all. In fact you have the sort of brilliant mind that can create complete works of art by writing & arranging disparate elements and making them come together beautifully. This is so much harder to do than any other creative act i can think of, & requires a much farther reaching imagination, focus & determination than most musicians or composers should ever hope to possess. (As you may recall from a previous episode of "As The Stomach Turns" Melissa had in her hands someone else's copy, but couldn't make herself watch it for foolishly, painfully lost cause-ish romantic reasons...) Well... I just got finished watching it. Wowa zowa. God, how I wish I hadn't been living in the backside of hell in the '80's. What I would have given to be at a Dolby concert in person. Until Our Fearless Leader decides to perform again, this tape will have to suffice. (And, when he does decide to perform again, won't we all be like Charlie Bucket and the rest of the kids, looking frantically for a golden ticket to get in?) There's a lot I'd like to write now - including some thoughts on what Robin wrote earlier today about TMDR the Innovator, but my computer is crashing repeatedly, and I have to wait for some stuff to come from Gateway to save me. I don't want to start any thoughts and have them vanish on me, so I'll wait. Nice words and thoughts, there, Robin. Oh -- for the Duran Duran folks (at least on this side of the pond) -- isn't it nice to hear "Ordinary World" (even if it isn't the REAL version) used prominently as the background in the omnipresent advertising for NBC's new medical/family/whatever drama "Providence"? Hoping to keep this sucker from crashing long enough to send this... Cheers, M. - -- Melissa R.
