There are folks here in suburban DC who are stocking up on tinned meats, dry milk, candles, oil lamps... and weapons. No joke. There was just an article in the Washington Post about a couple somewhere in the Virginia 'burbs who have moved into this huge home with lots of acreage (they called it their "perimeter") and they're introducing themselves to the neighbors by showing up with a gift of an emergency lamp and "The Survivor's Guide To The Y2K Disaster." Oy vey. Well, I wouldn't be surprised if fridges and lights went on the blink for a while, but heck, I always loved camping anyway. It's been weighing heavily on my mind of late, as a small, relatively techno-savvy group of my close friends (well, more than that really, but it's a loong, complicated story) are taking the whole thing VEEEEERY seriously. Since I have the luxury of being able to, I've dropped everything else to research it, for their sake and mine. No joke. The media's having too much fun with it. The two big scenarios everyone brings up are airplanes falling out of the sky and the economy, uh, falling. The first, well, on-board airplane systems don't tend to be written in COBOL (the old computer language that's the main cause of the biggest y2k problems), and don't know -- or care about -- the date, anyhow. The only plausible concern is some air traffic control systems, and I'm thinking they'll probably be pretty careful that day. As to the economy, well, a lot of bank systems *are* written in COBOL to some degree, so they could have a problem -- but even if the precautions (including buying duplicate systems and setting their dates to Jan 1, 2000, just to see what happens) don't work, it won't be that big a deal, since they're basically all going to back up their records on December 31, 1999, and if the numbers change much before the next morning, they'll be able to fix it pretty easily. The moderator of a mailing list I'm on (for owners of the car I have) is an expert on the computer systems in the car. He wrote a message -- last April, I believe -- about how he'd investigated the y2k bug in our cars by setting the clock on his ECU (Engine Control Unit) to the doomsday date, and he related the resulting dire effects on the engine due to a few particular miscalculations in the ECU. Within a few days, it had shown up on several key places on the internet (comp.risks, for instance), and reporters from CNN and others were calling him... the thing is, the whole thing was an absurd joke, making fun of the y2k hype. There are no y2k bugs in cars. Except for dashboard gadgetry, they don't even know what the date *is*. The only thing that worries me is insane fanatic-types who decide that the new millenium would be a good time for armeggeddon, and manage to, say, get their hands on a strain of anthrax. But that scares me *all* the time, 2000 just happens to be one of those human-nature magnet points. On an unrelated note... Melissa, you mentioned you ate at a Russian cafe the other day... I'm curious, where's it at? I can't say I'd enjoy eating Russian food *all* the time (based on only one trip to Moscow & St. Petersburg), but I'd enjoy trying it now and again. Oh, I should mention that I live in the area, of course; a bit west of the District. - -spc (usually a lurker lost in the woodwork, I pop my head above water once in a blue moon, and try not to put my foot in my mouth, usually without success... hey, mixing metaphors is as much fun as shooting monkeys in a barrel! Most folks in Boston can't even do basic repairs on their own homes without it turning into a circus act. Can you picture them with firearms? The funniest thing is how they're nagging the Amish to make things for them which don't require electricity. However the Amish are not planing to speed up production to meet any demand. Yes yes yes yes! Actually, for my birthday last year, the one thing I asked for was the new CD compilation of Psychedelic Furs songs, entitled "Should God Forget: A Retrospective." My one issue with it was that it did not include enough songs from Talk Talk Talk, one of my all-time favorite albums that I never got around to getting on CD. You have a cool last name -- how is it pronounced? The place is called "Balalaika," and it's at M and 33rd in Georgetown. Small restaurant, painted "Bordello Red" (that's what I call it) -- reminds me a lot of cooperative cafes in Moscow. Very friendly -- they have this Georgian dude who plays Russian ballads on Saturday nights. The food is very good -- it's very much what you would have if you were invited to someone's home for dinner. Yummy borshch. Mom in the kitchen brought me and my friend fresh piroshki for free after I'd greeted her in Russian. So, when did you visit Mutha Russia? > Oh, I should mention that I live in the area, of course; a bit west of the District. I see that Springfield is your stomping grounds. I was in NoVa (Loudoun County - South Riding) for a Christmas party this evening (at the ENORMOUS and GORGEOUS home of an up-and-coming graphic designer.) One of the guests was a fashion photographer -- he started out in DC and is now in NYC -- but he was kinda creepy and was name-dropping right and left and had brought negatives from a shoot he'd just done with some big name models. I thought it was kinda weird to bring this stuff to a Christmas party and show it to whomever, but, then again, maybe that's just me... I felt very, very poor and working class tonight. I was just a guest of a guest -- I'd asked what the dress code was and was told "very casual." Wrong. I show up in baggy cotton trousers and a comfy sweater, only to find myself surrounded by $300 dresses. There was a lot of silk and velvet and beautiful women with long, coltish legs and men in expensive casual gear and trendy eyeglasses. One of the beautiful female guests took a look at me and then (I assume) thinking I had walked far enough away said, "Well, I sure don't feel so bad about that ten pounds I put on last year!" And everyone laughed. I found a quiet room with some books and a piano for most of the evening. All in all, I think I'll avoid hobnobbing with the beautiful people in future. Give me a good book, some cool tuneage, and a comfy chair, and I'm pretty happy. - -- M, resident homebody - -- Melissa R.
