I finally rented a laserdisc player to watch/dub some laserdiscs (including TMDR's "Live Wireless") that have been gathering dust. It was quite a bear to FIND a place that rented laserdisc players. Everywhere I called, they only rented DVD players. By late afternoon, I finally found a small store that did rent laserdisc players. I went to rent it, quickly hooked it up to my VCR and popped in my Live Wireless LD. What can I say? It's excellent! Thomas sounds a bit different live but not by much. I did notice that "One of Our Submarines" is exactly the same as on The Golden Age of Video. Who made that decision?! I also enjoyed Kevin Armstrong's "Samson and Delilah". "Puppet Theatre" was quite different with Thomas at percussion too. Lene Lovich is....umm, weird. :) I wasn't too hot about "Jungle Line" when I first listened to it on the B side of the 12" version of "She Blinded Me With Science", but I enjoyed it here. I guess seeing it performed live added something to the song that wasn't there when I was just listening to it. Overall, an excellent 58 minute concert that I can now pop into my VCR and watch at anytime. My next LD was Rockula which I found in the $4 bargain bin. Exactly like the VHS version only everything was sharper and cleaner. My VHS tape looks so fuzzy now. :) My newly made dub of the laserdisc even looks better than the old original copy. As been said before, Thomas was excellent promoting Stanley's Death Park (still humming that darn jingle! "Come to Stanley's....Death....Parrrrk") :) BTW, I chose the "Adventures in Laserdiscs" subject because of all the people I'm reading on the Asia mailing list seeing the Buggles reunion concert this past weekend with Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes performing live as a duo for the first time. One thing that caught my eye was a band that played after the Buggles called Headspace. I'm sure this isn't the Headspace we know, so I say "Down with these imposters!" :) Ah, to be closer to London this past weekend..... - - Phil (who will be drooling over that Pioneer LD/DVD player I saw today and who will be watching "People" magazine for the Buggles interview on the 20th anniversary of "Video Killed The Radio Star") ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Dec 1998 13:33:08 EST From: TBlagg@aol.com Subject: Fwd: Alloy: what's up with FES site ? I, personally, laughed my fool head off at this picture when we got it back from the lab. I had no idea the ferret had been standing next to me at the time (this is the brilliantly intellectual Ramirez, my second-youngest ferret)... nor did I realize that Snuffy was poking his orange head in, echoing the wide-eyed look of Thomas' poster photo. I just realized that I had a good UK resource right here, so I'll throw this out for any of you that could help or have any ideas. My husband wants a football like those used in the Premier league. Did I understand correctly that they're made specially for the league? I've managed to glean that if I could find one it'd be rather expensive, but I can't get one in the US, not that I can find anyway. I'm sure I'm asking about this too late for Christmas, but his birthday is in March :) Any ideas? I'd be more than happy to pay in advance including shipping, if I can get my hands on one. Strange that you mention Kevin, as I meant to write to Alloy about him last week. I've been working a lot of Saturdays recently, doing a variety of techy things while there are no users logged in, and I've been listening to the radio on my Walkman, something I haven't done for a LONG time. Radio 2, which used to be 'old hat' when I was a nipper, is now a pretty good station for my generation, with a lot of progs with music from the 60s and 70s, plus some good progs breaking contemporary music in the afternoon. Anyroadup, there I was, grooving along to something or other on the Johnny Walker Show, when he announced that he was going to have a chat with Vonda Shepherd, who as you no doubt know is having some overnight success with her album of songs from Ally McBeal. After the chat she performed live in the studio, accompanying herself on the piano, but with just a guitarist backing her and singing backing vocals. The guitarist was none other than Kevin Armstrong, and in the intro Johnny mentioned that he'd played with such distinguished musicians as Thomas Dolby. Had he not mentioned it I wouldn't have made the connection. A couple of days later Vonda was on VH1 (well, you can't blame her for getting as many plugs in as possible while she's over here) and there was Kevin, in the flesh. Nice one. As it happens I put Vonda's CD on my Christmas pressie list before I knew anything about Kevin's involvmenet with her. I also put 'The Wall' on my list, but it seems that it might not be available at the moment. Am I imagnining it, or did someone on Alloy say they have a pre-recorded copy? The English weather, and other circumstances, seem to be trying to thwart my efforts to do more than a quick spin around the block. Black ice, fog, week-end working, taxi-ing the family to work/Christmas shopping, DIY, I've suffered the lot. Never mind, I'll HAVE to use it for work next week when my boss is back from holiday and will want her car park pass back. It's now registered on TWO recovery databases, and with the fuzz. I just need a radio transmitter on it now and I'll be able to follow my progress on satellite.
