He spoke about the inevitable sonification of the Web, and Headspace's part in it, both presently and in the future. Beatnik was demonstrated to a crowd of web developers and received quite well. Thomas was in top form, and looking very sharp (I mention that last bit for you ladies. :) I didn't get a chance to say hi, but I enjoyed the event. Well done, Mr. Dolby! I've thought of trying to conclude it on my own, but it would probably require the deletion of at least the last couple of chapters. We were building up to the conclusion but a lot of new people started joining the story and too many new plot twists and characters got introduced. But we did a pretty good job of keeping it relatively cohearent up until maybe chapter 8 or 9. Chapter 10 was an awful mess. Maybe I'll strip the HTML code from the chapters and post each one to Alloy so those who missed out on TEP on FES can catch up on it now. Even if for nothing other than the scenes where Miss Sakamoto's breasts were exposed. ;) Speaking of Miss Sakamoto, where the heckety heck has she been lately? Has anyone heard from her? I seem to recall something about her switching ISPs but then what? I'm going to isolate the various plotlines that need to be resolved and the characters involved in each. It would seem if we discarded Chapter 9 and 10 (this is where things started to fall apart) and worked on bringing the plotlines to a resolution instead of bringing in new plot twists and characters TEP could be saved (and two years after it's birth). Slavi, if you could send me chapter 2 of TEP that would be grand. There must have been a problem when I downloaded that chapter because it's incomplete and ends with "Transfer Interupted". I'll strip the HTML from the text and save each chapter as ASCII. Isolated the plotlines needing resolution and then perhaps we can all work together to bring the story to a close. Then perhaps next year if Robin is successful in generating enough interest in a Project B-Day book a completed TEP story can appear in it. It was fun to reread the story and see all those Thomas Dolby references appearing in it as well as all the old FES members in it. In anycase, if Slarvi would be so good as to send me chapter 2 I'll post each chapter to Alloy (with the exception of chapters 9 and 10). We can all work together on resolving the story and after we've finished it, I'll post the original chapters 9 and 10 just so people can see what a mess the story turned into just before the death of the Taproom. It would likely be easier for us to resolve the plotlines without the influence of the last two chapters. I came into it at a late stage at the old Tap Room & couldn't for the life of me figure out what was going on. Sadly I don't forsee a B-Day book ever coming about again from my hand anyway. I did my best this year & the project dissolved. I even tried to salvage it together with the two contributions I did eventually receive but it hasn't worked to my satisfaction. I'm going to give it a permanent rest... sorry to disappoint, but those two lovely people who sent in contributions mustn't feel discouraged from making a gift of their work to Thomas directly if they so wish. Which means that if anyone else here wishes to take up the challenge of putting a B-Day book together, they have my blessing (I still think it would be a cool idea) Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Nov 1998 14:18:49 EST From: RThurF@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: journal keeping In a message dated 11/11/98 10:18:41 PM Eastern Standard Time, 104040.2055@compuserve.com writes: << Is this anything like the Man on the Moon character (so wonderfully played by Robin Williams) in "The Adventures of Baron Von Munchausen? >> LOL! Isolated >the plotlines needing resolution and then perhaps we can all work together >to bring the story to a close. I'm not sure how we could do that in Alloy. In the Tap Room the plot was taken up by the next person to open the thread and post to it. This was possible because we were all accessing the same file in the same place, but how can we do that in a mailing list? In the other interactive story I was involved with at work, we had a strict rota, so the whole story was posted to everyone on the list (there were only four or five of us) but each took their turn to write ONE PARAGRAPH of no more than ten lines, then posted it on to everyone again. That way no one person could have a disproportionate influence on the plot. But here .... how many of us would participate ... if several people wanted to follow on from the last posting, who's would be the one that was used? The logisitcs could be complicated. >In anycase, if Slarvi would be so good as to send me chapter 2 I'll >post each chapter to Alloy (with the exception of chapters 9 and 10). >We can all work together on resolving the story and after we've finished >it, I'd still like to know how! Now, more than ever, we need something akin the the original Tap Room. What a shame this is not included in the new Dolby website. It was fun while it lasted but ran out of momentum and, as you say, got more confusing (it was always a bit confusing anyway) toward the end. I would have been quite happy to let it run and run so long as it was still fun. When I started out, the idea was partly to write a story, but also to have a purpose for popping in to the FES each day, and to encourage participation by the members. Somehow I feel that trying to tidy it up would be slightly sacrilegious, but if you want to have a go I can't really object. The thing belonged to us all. >We were building >up to the conclusion but a lot of new people started joining the story >and too many new plot twists and characters got introduced. Slarv. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Nov 1998 22:44:12 -0000 Greetings.... I'm new to ALLOY and have one burning question.... I have an old (1982, I think - Science was a hit in the UK at the time) = cassette of a TMDR televised gig (the prog was on a regional UK = commercial station and called "Off The Record"). TMDR performed a slow song called Urban Tribal - this is just about my = favourite song ever (well, almost..) I know that he performed it again on a live BBC TV prog a short while = later, and I think it was made available on one of those awful = flexi-discs given away on the cover of SMASH HITS magazine in the UK.=20 Unfortunately, the "Off The Record" prog was way before nicam, and my = recording is mono and, er, crap. The BBC performance featured clips of TMDR pretending to be a = projectionist showing his 'own' gig and had sound effects and drop-outs = all over it - you only heard a few secs of the song itself. The flexi-disc disintegrated a long time ago and anyway sounded like the = band were playing in a cupboard three houses down the street. I have never (in the past 15 years or so) been able to find a recording = of this fab song - so, my question: Does a recording of Urban Tribal by TMDR exist? If so, where? (I know, = that's two questions..) Hoping (in a sad sort of desperate way) that someone can help, Regards, Andy BOUCHER. UK.
