One meaning of SMPTE is Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers See www.smpte.org jeff ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 05 Nov 1998 22:42:15 -0700 From: Erik Habbinga Subject: Alloy: intro > >I think only five of us did new intros last week. is anyone else > interested? > >Don't be shy! > > I guess I missed the call for intros yet again. I don't read Alloy as closely as I could. Anyway... I'm Erik, and I first got into TMDR in the GAOW/TFE timeframe. I saw TMDR on the TFE tour, and I believe I had a copy of TFE before seeing the show. I later got the first three albums on cassette. Through some sad state of affairs, I've paid import prices (> $20) for the A&H, AAMB, and TFE CDs, all of which I've seen later for bargain prices. I also live in Colorado, along with Keith and Beth and Dennis. I've met Keith and Beth, but haven't met Dennis yet. I'm in Loveland, CO, and work for Hewlett Packard. In case you are curious, my town of Loveland is not the same as the ski area Loveland. I've been in Colorado for 22 years, starting in Colorado Springs and slowly moving north thru Boulder and Longmont before landing in Loveland. I haven't a clue how I came across alloy or the Flat Earth Society pages. I've been reading the messages for a long time, but I don't post much at all. I spent 3 years managing an email digest for bass players (The Bottom Line), and I'm still trying to recover from all that online time! It was quite a chore. I play bass, as well as a bit of guitar, keyboards, and drums. Currently I play with a jazz/swing band in Ft. Collins, and will play my first orchestra concert next weekend with the Longmont Symphony. Robin, I also have the Jan '92 keyboard issue. In fact, I also have the 85 (?) issue discussing AAMB. Here's a definition of some of the terms: PPG - one of Thomas' synthesizers. No longer in production, I believe. German origin, strange operating system/programming architecture (as I recall from a TMDR interview). Also used by Geddy Lee of Rush during the 80s. SMPTE - Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers. In TMDR's context, it's an audio signal put onto tape that allows musical and video equipment (computers, other tape decks, VCRs) to play in synch with the tape deck. If you've ever seen footage on TV w/ advancing time in a black box, you're seeing SMPTE timecode. Erik ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V3 #298 ***************************
