Subject: Alloy:1992 Keyboard/A&H

A certain *wonderful* fellow member of Alloy :) has just very graciously sent
me an issue of Keyboard magazine from January 1992, in which Thomas is
interviewed. I haven't finished reading the article yet but I am so happy to
be learning about all of the work that went into Astronauts & Heretics, that I
just had to write. Thomas sounds so excited and completely absorbed & focused
on everything that went into this album! How thrilling it is to think he is
planning to start work on another one & become reabsorbed into this realm. The
interview captures him at some peak of energy I think.

It's fascinating for me to read about this process - how the musical work came
together as a completed piece through both his planning & his intuition. To
hear this sort of creative act put in terms of DATs, MIDIetc rather than
things I'm used to like paintbrushes or fabric is really fun for me. Hearing
it explained in such terms is like hearing another language finally
translated. Rather, the end result broken down into pieces that i can
understand & correlate...

But the jargon is so bizarre. To quote Thomas: "..when it comes time to mix,
I'll push it up on a couple of faders, start messing with the sound on the
PPG, mess with the EQ on the board..." etc (I know it's not funny to those who
are recording musicians in this group but I just read it & it made my jaw
drop!) I guess it would be the same if I explained springing the bass bar or
something else violin-makerish :)

All of his expertise... and me a fan who knows nothing about any of the
technical aspects of what he's doing, and can only stand & gawk... it makes me
feel like such a pain in the ass! What am I doing on this list if I don't even
know what a SMPTE is? I hide my face in shame!

Now, for my bio:

My name is Keith Stansell, I am no longer the sole Denver inhabitant as Beth
pointed out before.

I grew up in Louisiana in a small town.  Our Sheriff had a hairlip (I
swear).  My first TMDR experience was by recording The Golden Age of
Wireless from KNOE FM out of Monroe on the Thursday night album hour.  They
played the whole album and I got it on tape.

I listened to that tape for a couple of years and when I was in college I
decided it was time to buy the real thing.

Jump ahead a few years.  1986 - I heard about  a new TMDR album coming out
called "Aliens Ate My Buick".  I finally found it on tape - for some strange
reason, I totally missed The Flat Earth which I later bought on CD, as all
the other albums.

As for what I do - I graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Technology in August of 1990.

I started working for a company out of Houston doing corrosion engineering
for pipeline companies.  I was transferred to Salt Lake City UT where I
lived until June of 1997.  In June 1997 I changed my career to computer
programming and moved to Denver CO where I started working for The Polk
Company creating programs that produced reports based on consumer surveys.

Last month I left Polk and started working for modis thanks to another Alloy
member Dennis Alexander who referred me to the company.  I'm doing contract
work for USA Global Link which is setting up an international long distance
company here in Denver.

I came across the Flat Earth Society pages on the Internet while trying to
find some information about The Wreck of the Fairchild which was on the
original GAW tape that I bought.  I was the 100th person to join Alloy very
near it's inception (Paul, I'm still waiting for those steak knives :).

Welcome to the new people, you are definitely among the friendliest group on
the Internet.
