With The Flat Earl we find him more soulful and less robotic, relying mainly on a fretless bass rather than a drum machine. An unexpected variety of instruments and influences are put to use, including Eastern sounds and jazz. Dolby compensates for lack of vocal chops by always creating anurgent atmosphere, and his most intense vocal performances are here. The crowning achievement is "Hyperactive," a devastatingly infectious ear-piercer. The Fiat Earl is truly big and round, and ready for the universe as Dolby remains one of music's most precious craftsmen. I have one last ghost story. This one happened not to me but to my cousin. When Terrie was little he started talking about where he used to live. This was odd because he had only lived in one place. He described his 'other' house in great detail, but no one really put much thought into his story. One summer his parents took him on a trip in another state. While they were driving in their car Terrie passed the time looking out the window. At one point Terrie said that the house he used to live in was just down the street. This caught his parents attention. They turned towards where Terrie was pointing and pulled up in front of a house exactly like the one he had described. They knocked on the door and the owners were kind enough to let them tour the house. They didn't learn much other than the house was owned by a family who had lived there for generations. His mom theorized that Terrie had lived there and died as a child. Terrie is all grown up now and doesn't remember any of this. Well, I guess that wasn't so much a ghost story as a reincarnation story, but it still fits the theme. Message text written by INTERNET:alloy@smoe.org >These ghost stories are great! Keep them coming!< Here's another. I'm not sure if it qualifies as a ghost story but it was most frightening when it happened. It was a dark and stormy night (I know, that's the worst opening to a story but it's true in this case) in Albuquerque, New Mexico, about 10 pm and quite dark. Albuquerque is situated at the base of the Sandia Mountains and a friend and I wanted to drive up to the top of the mountain to watch the lightening and storm rage over the city. We were both new to the area and didn't really know how to get to the top of the mountain but knew there was a way up. We tried road after road (not realizing that to get to the top you had to drive up the other side opposite of where we were) and kept dead ending in picnic areas. Finally we ended up on a road that was different from the others: it was a one-lane dirt road that led into the forest (the other roads were two-lane, paved roads leading to open areas). Everything was ok till we rounded a turn. All of a sudden I had this horrible feeling come over me. It was the most evil, awful feeling I've ever experienced. I was suddenly sure that if we continued on this road we would see something we didn't want to see, like a murder being committed. Every instinct in me said to get out of this area. I didn't say anything to my friend about this feeling but simply asked if she minded if we turned around and ditched this quest. She agreed. We turned around and I didn't feel better till we got past that turn in the road. At that moment Sheila told me that she had felt the exact same thing that I had felt. I drove as quickly as I dared back to the dorms. At one point while driving back I had the feeling that whatever was on that road was following us. I had the image of a dark, evil mass holding onto my car. Not a word was spoken between Sheila and myself as we drove back. We finally got to the dorms and ran to the safety of inside. I was so freaked out that I didn't want to sleep in my room (my roommate also stayed over at her boyfriends and I didn't want to be alone). Sheila agreed to let me sleep with her and her roommate. We were standing in hallway, in front of her room, telling her roommate what had happened. As we were talking the door to the hallway, a very heavy firedoor, swung open and there was no one there. That was all we could take. The three of us ran into their room, locked the door, and didn't say another word about it till morning. I'll never know what we would have seen if we had kept going. I combed the newspapers looking for any stories about a body being found in the mountains (there were none). I even tried to find that road again (in daylight!) but never found it. A few months later I was chatting with another friend in the dorms, who knew nothing of my experience, and she told me that she was driving up the mountain at night and found a dirt road. She said she felt an awful feeling as she drove on the road and left immediatly. You have no idea how much I enjoyed your messages. I hate the typical response I get when mentioning the name Thomas Dolby. Typical scenario: "Who?" "The guy who wrote 'She Blinded Me With Science." "Oh yeah! I remember that song." I don't even like that song but it's the only one most people remember him by. But you people not only know who he is but are so moved by his work that you have created this wonderful place in Cyberspace. Someone mentioned that it was odd that a non-Alloyer had written such a letter as the one I wrote. Truth be told, had I known about Alloy I probably would have been content to talk my love of his music with you and would have never written him at all. I think I missed something.< Norns are vitual pets for computers, found in 'Creatures' by Mindscape Entertainmen. Sorta like a Tomegachi but a million times more advanced. They look like a cross between deers and cats. They hatch from eggs and from that point on its up to you to teach them (they are able to see the mouse, which is you). They have a limited vocabulary, have feelings, get sick, and eventually die. As stupid as it sounds, I was sad the first time one of my Norns died. They really are fun because you get to interact with them. They play with toys, eat food, and can even drink an alcoholic beverage that gets them drunk. I highly recommend investing in this 'computer toy'. Rochelle ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Oct 1998 20:46:42 EST From: RThurF@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: Ghost stories for Halloween? Rochelle, your story about the evil dirt road just TOTALLLY horrified the crap out of me! I'm now scarred for life. And your story about your cousin, who knew that other house in such great detail.. reminds me so much of something that happened to me when I was about 17. My dad was an avid researcher into our family's history, and we located the home of one of our predecessors, one James Willard Shultz who was an author at the turn of the century (the last one of course :) and whose home has been made into a national landmark. My dad called ahead & made arrangements to visit, happy that the home had been preserved in pretty much its original state, and our cousin's bedroom had been left as it was when he had lived there. Well... the night before we were to go on our road trip, I had a very strange, extremely vivid dream that I saw a house, very specific in detail. As I walked into the dream-house, I saw a big wooden spiral staircase, which I ascended. At the top of this staircase I entered a bedroom, which had yellow floral bedsheets on the canopy and plain white walls.. the details of the bedroom were also quite specific, including the view from the window, and a small door in the corner of the room leading into a storage area. I told this dream to my dad & sister as we were having breakfast... then we went off on our trip. Everyone fell dead silent when we finally arrived at the house, because it was just like the one in the dream. A curator met us at the door, whereupon he led us inside to a big wooden spiral staircase, also exactly like the one in the dream... and up the stairs to the bedroom. This was exactly like the dream as well, except for one detail... the bedspread was plain, and the wallpaper had yellow flower pattern (for some reason it had been reversed in my dream (?) It was very strange, but I kept thinking how glad I was that I'd told them all my dream before we had gotten there, otherwise they would never have believed me! :) Through this and other strange personal experiences, and from hearing similar stories from friends, I have been developing a theory that sounds really strange when i type it out... but that the dream state may somehow be in some sort of tenuous connection with some other - non-physical - place or dimension, through which people might communicate (I take heart in knowing that nobody really understands what the dreamstate is FOR, exactly.. so this theory might well be viable as far as I know. At least I know Jung supported it :) Perhaps my cousin, wherever he is now, was communicating the images of his house to me? Perhaps as a welcome? Perhaps I sound totally bonkers? :) Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Oct 1998 22:09:22 -0500 From: Rochelle Kirby <104040.2055@compuserve.com> Subject: Re: Alloy: Ghost stories for Halloween? I totally agree with you about dreams. I've never had anything happen like you did with the house, but I think a friend and I connected through our dreams. Right after high school my best friend joined the Army and was transferred somewhere in Germany. We stopped writing to each other and soon several years went by. One night I had a horrible dream about her. I know longer remember the details of the dream, but the jist of it was that she going through something pretty bad. When I awoke I felt an overwhelming need to contact her. I had no idea where she was or how to contact her but I spent the entire day contacting the military and finally succeeded in getting her #. When we finally connected she told me a very long story that almost ended with her being discharged from the Army and that things were worse for her than they had ever been. She said she had been thinking about me and couldn't believe that I had found her # in Germany and called her. (I'm glad to say that she's in a much better place, and I just spoke to her not ten minutes ago.) This kinda fits your theory. As a side note to this, dreams play a major role in the story I am trying to write right now, in a way that I think you would like (I'll tell you about it only after it's written...I don't mean to sound secretive about it but I'm not sure how it will end up) BTW, what part of the Bay Area are you in?
