["Michael and Denise Luckey" Subject: Alloy: The Pirate Twins Hi Alloyed, I've been terribly touched by those of you inquiring after me. It's crush time here in the wine country and I think that refers to the crushing load of work more than the actual crushing of the grapes themselves. I was hoping to write on my one day off during my 60 hour or so working week but I spent the day dealing with my chronic health problem instead. But I'm relieved to announce that I'm doing much better today. And if anyone particularly likes wines from the Kendall-Jackson empire (i.e. KJ itself, La Crema [which is my employer], Stonestreet, Lakoya, Robert Pepi, Edmeades, and a few others), I can get them cheaply so contact me privately if you're interested. On to the subject line..._The Pirate Twins_ is a book that was somewhat of an inspiration for the song. It was written and illustrated by William Nicholson whom I suspect most of you know since he did the drawings for _The Velveteen Rabbit_. The following is the entire text though the pictures are what really make it charming so I've given a brief description of each page in parentheses. "One evening on the sands (a young girl wading reaches down for a clam shell) Mary [!] found (the shell opens and the girl kneeling on the sand looks delighted) the Pirate Twins...so... (the twins are in view, both black as coal and wearing earrings and pirate gear) she took them home (the three of them are walking down the beach hand in hand) and bathed them (one twin is draped across Mary's lap getting his behind powdered) and fed them (the twins are being spoonfed) on this (some sort of cake) that (various shellfish) and the other (a bottle of rum is on the table along with onions and some oval-shaped green things) she taught them how to dress (one twin is helping the other tie on his pantaloons) what "S" stands for (they read a book opened to a picture of a sailor) where to find Jamaica (they look at a giant globe) and the Milky Way (they have telescopes to look at the stars) how to dance (Mary has rejoined them as they dance by candlelight) and how to play (the twins are playing cymbals and bagpipes on the shore) but they didn't care (as evidenced by their tongues sticking out) they bit their nails and sucked their thumbs (they are holding hands as they do this) put things into the cat's milk (chili powder perhaps since it's red and pours from a shaker) - -and even- played dominoes in bed (from the pocket watch on the nightstand it appears to be about 2:30 am) - -until- one fine day they left a note (attached to a pincushion which reads: For Mary We have gone for ever Dont Wo rry Back soon Love Form B & A XXXX XXXX) and... stole a boat (they are pushing a sailboat to the water) and sailed away (they are busily maneuvering the craft) to sea (the small boat has the Jolly Roger at the top of the mast) but they never forgot their Home (they are sitting on a cliff looking pensively at the water, chins on hands) and always come back (Mary happily greets the twins coming to her doorstep and even the cat seems pleased) in time for Mary's birthday" (Mary cuts slices from the cake for each of them) Hope you enjoyed my rather crude description! Glad to hear things are going well for you there.. albiet busy. Hmm.. One day I will make the trek up to see you all there in the wine country.. And partake of a sip or two. And we can share a Dolby story or two as well... of course. I enjoyed the Pirate Twins book reading.. I have often had the same urge to steal that sail boat and wander off into the sunset... (And done it a few times.. too) Thanks! Ciao for now.. I do have another fan at the moment - my photographer who's doing some stuff for mee for the next album, bit I think that's only because she fancies me (I think.) Washing Up is still, along with Hawaii, my favourite off that album too. I still like the whole album alot, (except for The Line, which sounds very silly to me now) but I definitely regard it as The Early Stuff. The second album is well underway, as Stephen knows. There'll be a short extract from it as a b-side on the next TributeCD, so you'll hear it then. It's being really well recorded and I'm chucking lads of money at the studio to make it sound great. Also I have lots of lovely new gear including a top-spec Korg, my nice bass, and of course the Les Paul etc. I even splashed out on a big Boss delay pedal the other day. I'm actually in the studio all Saturday finishing off Songs to Ashes which'll be great, and has possibly my best tune ever. As regards the important bit though, the songs, it's coming on really well. I have finished writing Sunny Day, Binary, Desperate, Songs to Ashes, and God Incognito; and there will be two covers, Flying North, and the only good song my brother ever wrote, Perfect Circle. And there are more in the pipeline. As regards a name for it, take your pick from these Machine Remote* Arcadia The Bad Column Intermezzo Nobody Knows Rock'n'Reel* Live Fast* The Same* Auto-Immune* Single Figures Still Death In The Family* Black Heart* I'm not sure any of these are the final item, but the ones with stars are currently among the favourites. Any other suggestions are more than welcome. It won't be ready for ages though, as it does cost so much, and I have to go up to York each time to the studio, which is no picnic. Anyway, it's amazing to know that people have still got Zal!! On the 80's subject myself and 2 mates will be doing a little number for our Christmas Party!. In front of probably a crowd of 6 - 700 we will be performing a medley of 80's songs including; The reflex, Take On Me, Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This and I just Can't Get Enough. We will be dressing up as Morten Hakket, Annie Lennox and Simon Le Bon. (Guess who I will be?) I'm both nevous and excited at the same time...Nothing that a double Vodka won't cure.... Crackers, That story really freaks me out, it frightens me that you hear so much of this sort of thing. Just about everyone I know has their own story to tell...... Once upon a time...... I was a sceptical young lad. Always have been. That was until 4 years ago when I was living in Denmark, an accummulation of strange happenings forced me to re-think. I used to live in a sort of student collective, where the buildings themselves dated back many centuries. The town I lived in, Roskilde, is famous for it's Cathedral where EVERY Danish king or Queen has been buried since the 10th Century. As tradition the night before the burial the Dead Royal Victim and his family and their possey of guards would stay overnight at this collective known as Roskilde Ville. I won't bore you with the details of weird occurances, such as objects being moved in the night and furniture being upturned after returning home from a shopping trip etc....You get the picture! But one thing happened that freaked me out so much I will never forget it for as long as I live; I was having a nightmare....Dreaming of an horrific looking figure prowling at our bedroom window, eventually entering our flat, floating from room to room searching for something. I did not know what? Upon noticing me, this grotesque figure clad in a sort of green tunic, started to approach the bed. I screamed at the figure to leave me alone. The figment of my dream then moved unperturbed to the corner of the room where it stood angrily glaring at me in a way I cannot describe. It was so evil, so scary, & so real. At a moment, I woke out of this, sat up in bed, squinting at the corner of the room, still half asleep to see this halucination fade into the dark of the night. On catching my breath and conjouring up enough courage to turn on the light, my Girlfriend Tine did something that I will never forget....She suddenly sat up in bed, reached out an arm, and pointed at that very same corner of the room. She then began to scream uncontrolably. It took a while before I could calm her down and compose us both. It was actually the next morning when I dared even to ask her what her nightmare was all about. I was in a complete state of shock when she described exactly the same figure roaming in our flat as I did, residing to the corner of our bedroom....Right down to the green tunic!!! What was even more strange ws that we never had any strange happenings whatsoever after this. Sleep well, TJB. These ghost stories are great! Keep them coming! I've never believed in ghosts but my mom does. She has several ghost stories which she stands by to this day. One involved the family staying at their new house in Tennessee back in the '30's and her mother playfully pulling the covers off of her two daughters as they tried to sleep at night. I was only 10 months old when my grandmother Daisy died but one night when I was around 10 my mom watched as she put me to bed as the covers started to slowly creep off of the mattress. She said that was her mom letting me know she was watching over me. I could have sworn Mom was doing it yet she wasn't touching the bed. Oh well, I hope the covers stay on tonight! M.L.
