Agree, in fact this thread has prompted me to dig the vid out and watch it for the nth time, my eyes are drifting over to the screen as I type. Oh and let's not forget that the main character is the namesake for this lil' ol' list. Since I figured Alloy would be just a transition from the old kaleidospace dolby-list to the new fes-list, I thought the name quite apt at the time (if not obvious - hey it was all I could come up with at the time!) BTW, someone was talking about when Alloy first started, well for the record, it was 2:22am 2/2/96 (AEST) that just some (terrified!) guy hit the send button on a message to some 100 or so ex-dolby-list people proposing the list. As you'd have gathered by now, I no longer look after the list, that's in the tender, capable care of Robin Thurlow these days (I feel so redundant! ;-). stay well, Paul. Hello everyone, On Saturday Jeff informed me that the computer which handles Alloy (among many, many other lists) was being shut down for a short period of time in order to physically relocate it. The mailer delivery subsystem informed me the same day that there was trouble getting through to several addresses (which I'm almost certain may have to do with the shutdown..?) Among them Tim, Michael Luckey, Paul, John in Tazmania, Monya D, and JAMac - also 'ericbr' and 'mbj1' on two different servers, whom I don't immediately recognise by their addresses. If you're one of the people listed here & you are still having trouble receiving Alloy posts, please let me know. I can forward each of you copies of Alloy-Digest, or you can check out the archives to see if there's anything you missed. Thanks! The 1996 Birthday Project was a tape put together by Alloy members as a birthday gift to Mr. TMDR, and also as a showcase of the very talented people on this list for the people on the list. I hope you can listen to the song on the web page using your Compuserv program. It uses RealAudio streaming audio so you don't have to wait for the songs to download to hear them. If you have trouble listening, just e-mail me directly ( Keith@Stansell.com ) and I'll try to help you out. I haven't checked the links recently to see if all still work. Some are on my server, and some on Paul Baily's (thanks again Paul). As far as Cracker's question on this years project. I would like to again post the music for on-line listening, but it won't be until after the CD's have gone out, and permissions granted by the contributors (and copyright holder). The posting of the new project will require the removal of the old one from my server, so take notice all: You may want to download the files to your hard drive before they go away. - -Keith - -----Original Message----- From: Chris Cracknell To: alloy@smoe.org Date: Saturday, October 24, 1998 3:48 PM Subject: Alloy: Project B-Day I Listening Room > >Somebody should post the URL for Project B-Day I's (Aliens Ate My Birthday >Cake) URL to the list for Rochelle (and the other newcomers) to hear what >sort of Dolby inspired madness goes on with this group. As many of you know, I'm an IT administrator of eight years standing, so this might have seemed a strange request, but working for a government department we never have to consider in detail the factors involved in buying a computer for home use. We only buy PCs and I don't know anyone who uses a Mac at work OR home. Your views are valued and confirmed what I suspected, i.e. that all is not completely rosy in the Apple orchard. Anyway, I've managed to get the 560 going again now, so I'll leave it a while before buyng one of my own, especially as I'll be having to fork out for my new bike soon. AND the content reads a bit like Days of our Lives. I hope we did not lose both John AND Melissa - all I can say is us Earthlings can be strange folk. Life goes on. Big welcome to Matt and the eloquent Rochelle - nice to see new smiling faces. Judging by the mail so far Rochelle is going to be a valueable addition to Alloy. As an aside, 'Field Work' can also be found on 'Illustrated Musical Encyclopedia' (I thinks thats the correct title - I'll check tonight) by Ryuichi Sakamoto. I immediatly thought of a teacher at role call saying to her students "All absent students please raise their hands". Thanks Robin, I don't think I've missed anything. And then I thought Slavi was going to inadvertantly start a Mac/PC war - but I was pleasantly suprised by the objective non-flame type responses. And then all that talk of cemetaries and the like - did you know that if you play 'Leipzig' backwards it actually sounds like a recording of 'Leipzig' being played backwards ! A quick bio for Rochelle: Born Lancashire, England - childhood to age ten in Dawlish, Devon - emigrated to Tasmania, Australia - joined Police force - got married (lovely wife - Dianne) - had child (lovely daughter - Amelia aged 8) - had accident on Police motor cycle and have been in I.T. area of the force for the past 12 years - now do business/system analysis & programmming (can never remember whether you have 1 'm' or 2 so i'll make it 3) - live on 25 acres just outside of Hobart - have 12 Ostriches (which we farm as a hobbie), 8 sheep, a cat, a dog (dalmation cross brick) - love all things Dolby - and will be same age as TMDR in January. The end. Anybody heard from Mary (Europa) lately?
