So nice to hear a new voice emerge from the wilderness. Regarding your wish to send Thomas a birthday greeting: What we are producing is a sound recording comprised of Dolby covers by the more ambitious among us and verbal birthday good wishes from other listies less foolish than I (I am covering The Flat Earth, god help me). This will all end up on a CD that will be delivered to Thomas in time for his 40th anniversary, with copies to be made available to the rest of us who participated. So if you are able, grab a microphone, record your greeting on a cassette, and send it to me via Airmail. I'll see to it you are included, but you must act quickly. Last year's Birthday Tribute recording (the first) is a real hoot. We called it "Aliens Ate My Birthday Cake." This year promises to be even better! Again, welcome! Stephen aka /\/\iles P.S. Dear all, (including Josephine) Thank you for those heart felt welcomes! Nobody else but YOU, could possibly understand my anxieties, pain and trauma at not being able to discuss the latest on Uncle Thomas! Having someone there to talk to when, in the middle of the night one awakens in order to creep down the stairs to mince through one's rare record collection to locate a lyric from a verse in Therapy/growth is truly medicinal. I cannot sleep when something as major as this is playing on my mind's eye! A bit of background.... I first spotted Thomas on "Top Of The Pops" (The leading English music programme of it's day) broadcast by the BBC in 1982 when I was only 12yrs old. I was completely overwhelmed by this new style of what could only be described then as "electro pop". Yes, you've guessed it, he was performing that timeless classic 'WINDPOWER'. Within a few moments my chums and I had gathered our pennies together and taken a trip to the local branch of Woolworths and purchased the single between the 3 of us! We took it in turns to have the copy until it eventually shrivelled through over usage. My favourite Album though has and probably always will be "Aliens" This work of art will always be special to me! O.K. alright, yes I admit it, this is whereI became a REAL man under the moonlight to 'Budapest By Blimp'. Favourite song? Well, I would have to go for two here;"I Love You Goodbye" & "The Flat Earth". Both have been expertly produced with Thomas showing off all his skills as a musician by playing and arranging so many instruments (including those violin things) and juxtaposing them in his unique sublime style! Talking of violins, did you spot thim on the cover of the original release of Hyperactive on his head playing one of those stringy things? I wonder if he was ACTUALLY playing it? This for the brits amongst us,..(sorry, but I couldn't help posting this,..it's so awful) forgive me,... Lissu :o) Gervase was a chef in a French Bistro. One night he received a laate order for seafood. All that was left in the tank was a small squid. He took the squid out and put it on the chopping board, lifted the cleaver then looked down at the squid and stopped. This ugly little green squid looked up at him with terror and tears in its eyes. It had a little moustache which was quivering with his lip. Gervase simply couldn't do it. Hans the German dishwasher said " you French you are all soft - I'll do it" so he lifted the cleaver but then glanced down and saw the little green squid, trembling lips, tearful eyes and couldn't kill it. I, too, have learned recently that you can't trust people just because they seem trustworthy; and/or being family doesn't necessarily equal trustworthy in the first place. I just wanted to let you know that we've all been there! And those of us that haven't, will, sometime our lives. Try not to hold it personally, as in "what did I do wrong.." but more, some people exist to cause trouble. That, or they don't think about the implications (or don't care about how their actions make other people feel). Or, as in my case, the person has been through all this psychotherapy and instead of it helping whatever problem they have, they use it as an excuse to feel justified all the time. Like, "whatever miscommunication is going on here can't POSSIBLY be my fault. I've been TRAINED how to communicate - -- must be YOU." Grr. It's a comfort to know that others have been in similar situations and have come away from them with increased clarity of mind. For those of you who have just tuned in, this is in reference to something I mentioned a few weeks back... a very good friend of mine (or so I thought) whom I had hired to work with me in my department several months ago because I knew he needed the job. Though he started off extremely well, he quite suddenly changed into someone who needed constant supervision once summer rolled around. I discussed this with him every day, trying to help him out, and he led me to believe he was having marital problems. Then one day I overheard him telling a friend on the phone - when he thought I wasn't there - that he was certain to get fired soon & could then collect unemployment! To be honest, I was very afraid he'd started up with some drug habit... the behavior seemed to point to it... but I was so pissed off that he would take advantage of my friendship to the point where he was flagrantly risking my professional reputation (my boss had hired him on my recommendation because she trusts me, and the unemployment payments would have come out of her own pocket!) that I swore to myself he would collect unemployment payments over my dead body. I later told him I knew what he was doing, and he was so embarrassed, he eventually quit. I still don't know if it was because of a drug problem or not... I've kept in touch, and he seems okay still... but I still have trouble thinking about it. I don't know if it was his fault or the fault of some addiction. I still have to go on trusting my friends of course - I know there isn't any fault in that - just as long as I don't ever let myself get taken advantage of (I've had to establish these rules with myself so that I don't become bitter in my old age!!) But being as unconfrontational as I am by nature, having to deal with such situations to any degree makes me feel like a basket case.
