Hi y'all, I hit upon a bit of a crazy idea Friday night/Saturday morning after reading an email from a very good friend of mine half a world away. Would that physical distance could become irrelevant. In a way it /is/ irrelevant. We on this list have gotten to know each other well over the years and talk with each other every day, yet thousands of miles divide us. Physically, but not in the mind, not in heart. Okay, okay, I'll get to the point! Imagine the feeling you'd get listening to a song, knowing that good friends of yours spread throughout the world were listening to that same song at the very same moment. I think it'd be something special! I've run this by our intrepid KeeperOfAllThingsAlloy(tm), Robin, so now I'd like to run it by you. I think we're pretty much in agreement that I Love You Goodbye rates very highly if not at the top of everyone's favourite Dolby song list. IMHO, it also expresses the spirit of Alloy so well with the line "There is a spirit here that won't be broken." What I propose is this: at an agreed time (taking into account the time differences) we all stop what we're doing and listen to I Love You Goodbye while thinking of the tens of others throughout the world doing exactly the same thing, be it in the sultry sub-tropics of Queensland Australia, the autumnal bluster of Washington State, US, or the wrap-up-warm-and-huddle-close cold of Finland. I know it probably sounds silly, but have a think and let me know... even if it's a "you've been doing that AppleScript stuff on that Mac critter for too long again haven't you, Paul..." cheers, Paul. However, I believe it is appropriate to restrict this choice to the musical contributors due to the immense effort such contributions require, so I have taken this issue up with the Dibbsers privately. Your suggestions will be happily considered, but let's leave the voting to the people who are going to spend every free moment for the next month and beyond on their recording projects. Hopefully we'll decide on something most of us will appreciate. da_tape_nazi ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Jul 1998 10:58:03 -0700 (PDT) From: Elaine Linstruth Subject: Re: Alloy: Tribute Project --- time is growing short! Damn, can't remember it now. Just tried to get to his Blissworks site via the FES, but it just kept telling me it was transferring me and stopped. Anyway, he had a similar idea, except that it didn't involve listening to any particular music, it was just that participants would take a minute or two to spend in quiet contemplation of something or other ... maybe it was just quiet contemplation. If anyone can remember more about this, you have a better memory than I do. The inventor of 'the 12:30 moment' was none other than Dr Bliss, alias Clif Brigden ( currently drbliss@globalmusic.com though he used to be drbliss@netcom.com ) who played drums on The Flat Earth and who WAS subscribed to this list. Robin, as list owner can you tell us if he's still on the list? If we ask him nicely I'm sure he'll tell us all about it, not that this will affect our participation in Paul's global music project. As we were walking down our road toward Beacon Street we saw this very strange thing meandering across the sky from northeast to southwest. Some people here may remember my description of it since it impressed me so much - I don't want to bore anyone so I won't get into it again, though I'll e-mail anyone privately if they want details. At the time, copse convinced me it could have been a stealth bomber cruising over Boston doing stunts, and flashing its lights in configuration! This is the only thing that even came close to resembling what this thing looked like or how it behaved. Dave & I couldn't believe it, and we have always studied stars, clouds, sunrises & sunsets, etc. and have never seen anything even remotely like this. Whether it was a stealth bomber or some other thing, regardless... it was very impressive! OK, OK here's the concept: Similar to last years project, the cover will at first look like a TMDR cover. In this instance - The Flat Earth. Also similar to last years project, the picture will be altered slightly to include a birthday cake. The cake on this years cover would replace the pan that TMDR is holding in the photo. The cake could be slightly flat if we use that as the title. If you look at the expression on TMDR's face in the photo, he looks a bit upset or suprised. That's basically it. I thought it would be kind of neat to continue a theme for the cover art from last year. I'll make up an example and present it as soon as I get the scanned image from Dr. Beth. - -Keith - -----Original Message----- From: Elaine Linstruth To: alloy@smoe.org Date: Monday, July 27, 1998 11:22 AM Subject: Re: Alloy: Tribute Project --- time is growing short! > > >Not to try and be bossy or anything, but maybe if we all knew the concept >or idea or artwork planned, or whatever it is, then a consensus could be >reached based on that.
