Brown" Subject: Alloy: Birthday projects and Tap Room Hi gang, Well, since I've been strongly encouraged by /\/\iles to make my feelings known about the title of the tribute tape, here's my two cents worth. At the risk of offending Keith, I don't like "The Flat Cake" either. It conjures up disappointment in my mind, like after you've worked so hard to bake something, then a large truck drives by just as you're taking it out of the oven and it falls. Also, we used the cake idea last year. I know we've got imaginative people on this list so I'd like to encourage folks to be creative. You all know my feelings about recycling ideas over and over again... Beth wrote: > In trying to think of something that will go with Keith's > absolutely wonderful idea for the J-card design (which I won't > give away here), the only other thing I could think of was > something like "Older than Dirt." Probably needs work. But > actually, anything based on a song title from "The Flat Earth" > would work great too, like "Dissonance" (but is that also a bit > disrespectful to the musical selections contained therein?) I take the blame for that particular idea. Stephen and I were just brainstorming to try and inspire people to come up with something. I'm not wedded to anything that we wrote and know that as we did with the t-shirt idea, we'll decide on a consensus. In order to use Keith's idea, I'd prefer that we use some title referring to one of the songs on the CD. I'm imagining something as whimsical as the wonderful "Aliens Ate My Birthday Cake" j-card so I'm suggesting that some idea based on "Hyperactive" might be in keeping with the spirit. I confess to having very strong attachments to "The Flat Earth" CD and am a bit disconcerted about it becoming a parody. But I really ought to just lighten up, eh? I'd also like to remind those folks who are more comfortable with the written word or graphic arts to work on their submissions. I spoke to our darling Robin the other night and was flabbergasted at the amount of work she's put into the book. I'm thrilled to be able to contribute something that will have the honor of residing in its pages though I'm not sure it will be worthy! And lastly, I'd like to say how unhappy I am about the lack of interest in the Tap Room. Curtis, Elaine and Chris, Russell, Paul, and I'm sure others I'm not aware of put so much time and effort into the project, consulting us about our preferences, etc. I know they must be frustrated, disappointed, and think we're ungrateful. I certainly appreciate what they've done and hope we can somehow restore it to its former glory. After all, if it weren't for the Tap Room, I'd be alone and miserable instead of happy with Stephen! I now cede the floor to someone else . Hi everyone, In defense of my suggestion "The Flat Cake" for tribute title, remember the word "Earth" is the word that is being changed. "Flat" was there to begin with. The "Flat' in the compilation title is a bit of a tie in to last years title. In both situations, poor TMDR just can't quite get to eat his birthday cake. - -Keith /\/\iles wrote: >Nothing personal, Keith, but >I'm somewhat lukewarm on that one. What an incredible cad. C'mon over here and let me remind you how wonderful you are. ::hugs:: >> Thank you so much for your sympathy Robyn :) ! ::hugs:: in return!! As I've been finding out over the course of the last 30 years, there are some people who would take extreme advantage of any situation in which someone tries to help them out. It may take me, personally, a little while to identify them because I do tend to be quite gullible, though I don't mean to be (Lord knows!) Because of this, it takes me ages to really get to know & trust someone, thanks to a certain amount of reserve I've had to build up over the years, because I've been taken in badly on those few occasions & really felt like a stooge. Well, it's happened to me again... this time by a friend whom I really trusted. I put my professional reputation & good name on the line to have him hired at my place of employment, to find out recently he's begun leeching heavily off everyone's sympathies at work by lying about various personal problems & physical disability, in order to fuck the company over for money (a long story, but that's the gist of it) My boss & everyone else at work has never been anything but kind to him & I'm so disgusted that he would try to take advantage of the situation. Anyway, I still think it's definitely possible to be caring toward others & still not be labeled a doormat as long as you stay clear-headed, and can stand up for yourself when you need to. I had such a 'discussion' with my friend that I think I really unnerved him. I can't fix the thing that's caused him to begin acting this way but at least I do know I've done everything I could. Robyn, again, thank you for your kind words. I really appreciate it :) Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Jul 1998 16:56:02 EDT From: RThurF@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: Birthday projects and Tap Room In a message dated 7/25/98 4:18:14 PM Eastern Daylight Time, Mary_A_Brown@compuserve.com writes: << I'd also like to remind those folks who are more comfortable with the written word or graphic arts to work on their submissions. This could be the solution to our confusion, but I wouldn't want you to have to do a lot of (unpaid) work if members are still going to be unhappy with the result. You just can't please all of the people all of the time. I know we were asked how we'd like the new Tap Room to work, and I'm sure some folks made suggestions before it went live. I can't remember whether I said anything at the time, but I think I was probably happy to see anything that would be a reasonable replacement for the original and decided to just wait and see how it turned out. Having used the new one a few times, I did find it somewhat confusing, i.e. the order of postings and which posting belonged to which contributor. If I'm honest I have to say that I'd have liked it to be as near to the original as possible. The one thing I REALLY liked about the new one was the ability to edit a posting AFTER I'd posted it, as it allowed me to correct typos and grammatical errors that I'd missed when preparing a message. Having said all of that, the one thing you can't do is give me more time in the Tap Room. When I originally started popping in there, I had a lot more spare time during working hours, and did manage to get a decent lunch break. Since moving sites and a change of responsiblities it's much more difficult for me to find the time to visit. With Alloy, I don't need much time on-line, and find it much easier to deal with from home. The Tap Room took a lot more time on-line, and I can't afford to do that from home. I know that one or two others had similar problems, AlgieArch and Maurice for example, who even ended up unsubscribing from Alloy, because they just don't have the time to participate any more. I'm still in touch with them individually, but not nearly as often as we used to be. It would certainly help if the hot link in the FES to the Tap Room DID point to the new one, then casual visitors would find it and could be made aware of Alloy as well. As it is now, you have to know its URL already in order to go to it. I don't know if it's possible to get that link updated, but it's worth investigating, if anyone knows of someone at Netrex who'd oblige. This might be the first test for Robin in her new role, to see if she can find anything out about this from Thomas or anyone else at Headspace. NB Chris van Rensberg (chris@headspace.com) was originally looking at the question of a whole new FES site last year. (See message from him appended to this message, below.) Nothing came of this, and I'm sure there were very good reasons for it. I wonder if Thomas would want a whole new site setting up now that he's concentrating his efforts at Headspace, even if it were an identical copy of the original with a different ISP. If the FES site is now static, I suppose we should be glad it hasn't closed down altogether. And finally, I just wonder whether we've now got so used to communicating through Alloy that the necessity to use the Tap Room is not so great. Originally I did most of my chatting with Dolbyites in the Tap Room, though rarely in real time, as when I was logged in only the two or three other European members were in at the same time. By the time the US members were arriving, I was heading home after a hard day slaving over a hot keyboard. When The Tap Room finally closed down, and even the back door wasn't available to us, I just got used to using Alloy instead. It wasn't the same, in many ways, but I acclimatized. I'd certainly like to use the Tap Room more often, and if we can get it nice and friendly I think I'd be encouraged to find the time. On behalf of the Alloy mailing list, which boasts several of the old Tap Room's finest members, I wonder if you might be able to provide me with some information pertaining to the status of the FES site as well as the new Tap Room. The point has been raised that there is still no active link from the FES to the new Tap Room. I am curious as to whether the search for a new provider for the FES - to which you had alluded last year - has forced a postponement of any adjustment to the site, or if perhaps more changes are planned for the new Tap Room before it will be considered ready for a direct hyperlink from the FES.
