Ahhh, yeah. I was just hoping for that $1,000 bonus that Jamac will get if I get hired by the company he works for. There is a lot to be said for the ability to ride your bike to work. I do that often with my current job. I talked to someone recently with Volt for a 3 month position with HP in Fort Collins. It was for a GUI tester. I backed out during the interview because I didn't really have the skills they were looking for and I didn't want to commute to Fort Collins. - -Keith - -----Original Message----- From: Erik Habbinga To: alloy@smoe.org Date: Monday, July 20, 1998 7:47 PM Subject: Re: Re: Alloy: nary a spirit can be broken @ alloy! > >> ------------------------------ >> >> Date: Sun, 19 Jul 1998 21:01:11 -0600 >> From: "Keith Stansell" >> Subject: Re: Alloy: nary a spirit can be broken @ alloy! >> >> ..and the interview went well I think, Erin is submitting me for a position >> with USWest. I was recently reading Stephen Carter's recent book on "Civility," and at one point, he argues that Internet communities tend to be uncivil places by nature. Apparently, there is a tendency for people to make up fictional personae for themselves just for the fun of it (robbing others of any ability to count on anything genuine) and to resort quickly to very hurtful and damaging words, also just for the fun of it. I was struck by how different Alloy is from that description. I feel privileged to be surrounded by genuine people who genuinely care about each other. Umm... Brown" Subject: Alloy: The classics never die, mon Hello everyone, I finally feel like I'm back among the living at least for another week or so after starting a new job and I'm still battling with a sinus infection. For those who are interested, I'm working temporarily as a lab tech at a local winery and it's been great - the folks are all young, easy-going, and it's a *job* as opposed to a career so no weekends or evenings (until crush starts, that is). And best of all, no animal sacrifice! A few things of note for fans of '80s music - an hour or so ago a live broadcast ended on www.liveconcerts.com of Neil Finn which was absolutely wonderful. I know there are some Crowded House/Split Enz fans out there (Paul? Melissa?) and even for those who aren't, I highly recommend getting a copy of "Try Whistling This" by the younger of the Finn Brothers. Hey, it's gotta be good if /\/\iles, who prefers "compositions" a la King Crimson, Pat Metheny, etc. rather than a catchy tune like yours truly, insisted on buying a copy himself so that we could have one for the house and one for the car. And he's even looking forward to accompanying me to the much-anticipated concert in 3 weeks (not that I'm counting or anything :-). Or at least he's pretending to be! If Neil isn't your cuppa, then perhaps you might be interested in the video online chat with Howard Jones tomorrow at 3 pm PST (I'm just going to have to check out the archives on that one, I'm afraid). I tuned into a local radio station today that's supposed to be playing Neil Finn's single and while they didn't come through on that front, what did I hear but "Science"! Certainly perked me right up! This weekend is a Dolby-related artist one in the Bay Area since both Beausoleil and Dan Hicks are playing. Alas, /\/\iles and I will be enjoying Ray Charles instead. But I can't help but wonder if The Man himself might be in the audience for at least one of the shows... You folks have certainly worked yourselves into my subconscious since recently I've had separate dreams with Slarvi, Robin, Brian, and two with TMDR (one of which I'm convinced was actually supposed to be Robin's!). I've been meaning to mention that before I moved out here to CA, I had this incredibly pleasant and comforting dream about the women of Alloy which I interpreted as sign for me not to worry about where I end up because I will always have a group of supportive friends even if they aren't physically with me. I agree it's great that Robin is taking over the helm of Alloy. I truly can't think of a better choice. Sometimes my cynicism gets the best of me but when I read the enthusiasm in Robin's posts, I always come away renewed. Paul has done a fantastic job (and I'm not the slightest bit biased ;-) and I appreciate his unselfish ability to recognize his limitations and pass the mantle on. And I echo Beth's sentiments about the wonderful community we have here. I guess I've been very lucky. I only subscribe to 3 lists and I haven't experienced anything except a few mild flamings, none of which were directed at me. I think a lot of how the interactions are conducted depends on two things. One is the topic of the list. I've made some dear friends on the Crowded House list (I've even been invited to a wedding in New Zealand!) and the women and men on the endometriosis list are amazingly caring and open (we've all been through so much pain, fear, and mistreatment by doctors, significant others, and acquaintances that we want to give as much comfort to each other as we can). The other determining factor as I see it is the moderator for the list. That person really sets the tone and I think folks who post tend to follow his/her example. So I'll say it again, Paul, much of the success and good feelings that Alloy generates is because of you. And I know that will continue with Robin. One last thing: Chuck, I've been administering self-flagellation about forgetting your birthday. I figured I ought to remember it since it's the same day as my dad's but I guess my low-grade fever addled my brain. Please forgive me! And I have a question for you since you're a more knowledgable Depeche Mode fan than I - does the video for "101" have any brief glimpses of TMDR since, if I remember correctly (and that's a big if), it was recorded at the Pasadena concert where he was on the bill. Ooh, didn't mean to be so windy but I have absolute faith that you all will indulge me... I haven't been around much lately, due to offline commitments and one of my periodic bouts of severe depression. Stuff - A pair of my friends are getting married...nothing like helping coordinate a pagan wedding...speaking parts for at least a dozen or so people. Brigid had an ear infection a couple weeks back, but she's better now. Someone canvassed our apartment complex and nicked whatever they could manage and we lost a set of windchimes that had a great deal of sentimental value for me. It's not all bad, though. I'm starting to feel better...a friend of ours from Nevada is going to visit next month, which is nice. I've been doing a little beadwork to relax, and that should turn out reasonably well. I also got my second T-shirt from the SciFi channel today for winning their twice-weekly trivia contest. (You can only win one shirt a month, so I'm doing pretty good. ;)) I think I just need to take a mental health day or something. :) Happy belated birthdays to John, Paul and Charles :) Slarv, you (and anyone else who wants 'em) can have raspberry hugs anytime. Dan, thanks for the link to Dave's...we've been getting into MAME lately, and it's a great resource. Melissa, sorry to hear about things...hope they're getting better. Have an extra ::hug:: just on principle. :) Oh, and Death Race 2000 is one of my favourite tacky movies. Belated happy anniversary to Miles and Mary...feel free to be lovey-dovey all you want. It's nice to see. :) Michelle and Russell, thanks for the parody...I used to do cabaret for Rocky Horror, so it's particularly funny :) Beth, glad to hear the new job is going well, and that you've gotten a house. :) Sprinkle a few more 'good luck's and other assorted well wishes in there for anyone I missed. Paul - Has it really been 2 1/2 years since you sent that mail saying you were starting a list since the Kaleidoscope one was closing? It seems like only yesterday. You've been a -wonderful- host, and I'm glad to hear you won't be leaving us entirely. Robin - I can't think of a better person to take care of things here. I'm sure you'll do an absolutely smashing job. ::hugs:: I'm sure I've missed something or another in all that. It's probably just a case of life overflowing into the unconscious. As far as I can remember, I've never dreamt about anyone on the Alloy list, or Thomas himself. The only famous musician-type dream I can remember was about Rob Townsend, who was the drummer with Family years ago, who for some reason was playing in our school hall. That's about all I can remember about it, which is not very interesting at all, I'm afraid. Apart from that, the only other dreams I could easily relate to anything in my 'real' life, were ones about karate, in the years when I was having lessons. I used to dream about doing the kata (set piece exercises) which is apparently not unusual among karate students. We practices them so regularly as 'to be able to do them in our sleep' which turned out to be almost literally true. I suppose I must have had other real event-related dreams, but I can't remember any right now.
