When all the pictures went up I explained the graveyard scenario, because some
people here thought it was a little unusual for me to be sitting there. Slarv
couldn't help thinking of it in context with one of Britain's Cadbury Flake
bar ad campaigns, somehow, though I can't *quite* remember how... 
BTW speaking of photos, I promise I'll still take that photo with the poster
you sent me... and with the album cover you're now so thoughtfully sending!
Michael, it was so INCREDIBLY nice of you to have gotten the albums signed for
your pals at Alloy :) !!!!! (And many thanks to Thomas also for doing the
signing)

Paul has mentioned to me that he means to update the page, but has been so
busy that there just hasn't been time (what with his new job & all) He hasn't
forgotten, and in fact there are a number of pictures he wants to post there
as soon as he can possibly get to it. I know I, for one, can't wait to see
your picture!

Greetings. I hear that after a splendid innings (Tap Room-type
term--something to do with the English version of Baseball :) the
valiant Paul Baily is passing on the Alloy mantle to Robin Thurlow.

I would personally like to thank Paul for the fantastic effort he's put
into keeping this list together.

I would also like to second Paul's choice of Robin to take over the
running of the list. He's been showing her the ropes, and he says she's
pretty much up to speed. She is technically very adept, and we all enjoy
her enthusiasm. Oh, and recently Headspace's lucky nerds have been
gorging themselves on her delicious homemade Chocolate Chip Cookies. I
know she will do a great job!

Actually, I'm not bothered by it, because I'm suddenly finding myself 
reaching the point in my life where birthdays are to be feared rather 
than savored.  :)

but other than that, on July 16, 1970 at 7:06 pm I was brought into this 
world by my mother with the help of a competent (at the time) doctor and 
some really good drugs.

watching the flames of the fire, or perhaps losing themselves in one of 
the austere paintings on the wall. I get up and clear my throat to

Ladies and gentlemen, a moment of your time if I may.

As you probably know, Alloy first started at 2:22am 2/2/96 - nearly 2 and 
a half years ago. Thanks to the support of people on it, from there it 
grew into the list you see here today. It's something I've felt a quiet 
pride in having had a small hand in nurturing.

People come here for many reasons, some for conversation about 
AllThingsDolby(tm) with like-minded souls, others to just enjoy the 
atmosphere as an island of relative sanity in a sometimes insane world. 
It's been really rewarding to see many friendships spanning this Flat 
Earth begin and grow as a result of Alloy.

There is a spirit here that won't be broken.

Over the past few weeks I've put a lot of thought into my role here as 
list owner. Due to growing time commitments and various other reasons, 
I've come to the conclusion that I can no longer put the time and energy 
into this role that I think it deserves. The last thing I'd want is for 
Alloy to suffer as a result, so I think it's time to pass the torch along.

I thought carefully about who could take over as list owner; who would 
best be able to give Alloy the support it's due. For many reasons, one 
person stood out as the obvious, and most fitting choice. I think you'll 
agree too.

I'd like to introduce Alloy's new list owner: Robin Thurlow.

Robin's been with Alloy since the early days, and as you'd know by now 
has always been a tremendous supporter of Alloy as well as every person 
on the list. With Robin watching over Alloy, I know it's in good hands.

I'll still be on the list myself, but only as a subscriber (probably a 
lurker for the most part ;), if you have any queries regarding the list, 
Robin's the person to contact. Having Robin looking after the list will 
give me time to finally revamp the Alloy web pages so I'll hopefully have 
some news for you on that over the coming weeks.

Finally I'd just like to say thanks for your phenomenal support over 
these past years. You've made it a lot of fun for me to be a part of. All 
I ask is that you give Robin the same great support you've given me.

<after a short pause, wanders back to a chair to sit and gaze at the

Happy Birthday!!! I'm sorry I missed it :( To make up for my lack of
attentiveness to this - I always try really hard to remember people's

I'm grateful for your kind words, Thomas. Thanks to Paul's excellent
instruction, I feel as prepared as I'll ever be to take on the
responsibilities of maintaining this list... but as always, hearing words of
encouragement and support will give me the confidence I need to not be a
complete clutz.

Yes, you have to have not only the date but time and place as well, if you
want to do an accurate one. I'm no expert but I have been doing horoscopes for
friends as a hobby whenever time permits, and it's quite easy to do a
rudimentary one if you have the proper charts (available at any bookstore) In
fact there's probably online information you could check out too.

Do you have ANY idea how that makes me feel? In 1970 I was sweet sixteen
(and never been kissed).  The only birthday that held any real dread was my
40th, and that was really only because OTHER people made a big fuss about
it.  Oh, and 42 was a BIT disappointing, as I was expecting to learn the
answer to Life, The Universe and Everything (qv The Hitch-Hiker's Quide To
The Galaxy), but nothing of that nature materialised.  Say Lavvie.

Blimey, I DIDN'T know that, actually.  I always assumed that Alloy had been
going for some time before I subscribed, but it seems I was in almost from
the start.  It makes me feel proud ....... and humble, somehow.  If anyone
had asked me how long I've been an Alloy subsciber, I don't think I could
have given an accurate answer. 

I WOULD say that it's been the one list I have stayed subscribed to since I
first got access to the net, and that's because of the friendly atmosphere
that's always been a feature of it.  I have been on other lists (Jethro
Tull, Fariport Convention and The Blue Nile) but this has been the only one
that hasn't resulted in a severe flaming if a subscriber has gone off topic,
swamped me with postings continually going over the same ground, or run out
of steam through lack of contributions.

Paul, you  HAVE done a first class job, particularly on the rare occasions
when someone has taken umbrage at another subscriber's postings, and I too
wish you all the best in the new job.

Robin, you have been a stalwart of the list, and I'm sure you'll carry on in
the same tradition.
