As many of you know, David Bowie is introducing his own ISP next month... anyone think TMDR will come out with one in future? It occurs to me, though I love David Bowie, that I'd much rather go with Thomas were it possible... Thomas made me feel better! (true story) Last week I dragged myself in to work in spite of the migraine I woke up with that day - mostly because I despise being sick for any reason & hate migraines especially - grabbing my walkman on my way out of the house. Lucky for me, it was my Dolby tape... I turned it on & just concentrated on the movements of his voice through each song... my headache seemed to fade in the distance a bit while I listened to him, as I sat waiting for the train. It was so nice, I nearly nodded off & didn't notice the train which had pulled up, and was about to pull away again without me. I'm so grateful Thomas has such a beautiful voice, and knows how to use it (the ending... evil migraine faded for good by 2pm only after walloping it with Imitrex a couple of times... but I must say I think Thomas might have singlehandedly brought me through that morning by the strength of his voice alone :) Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Jul 1998 18:52:42 -0600 From: dalexander@juno.com (Dennis S. As a side note, I work as a contractor at US West where Beth has recently been hired so I know some of the ins and outs of this. Beth wrote, >Thanks! Actually, I don't think it's in any danger, or I wouldn't have come here. Though I don't know - I'm now having to go through this CBT course that is ominously called "Compliance Training" (seriously, that's the official name). You WILL comply with our DIVERSITY! Another proud trademark of US West. I mentioned to one of our Directors about an email saying something about having a month to celebrate our European heritage. I asked "Does this mean, I can wear my kilt to work this month?" She said; "You can wear your kilt any day you want." Yet I'm sure that if I wore the entire costume, weapons and all, I'd be out on my ear in no time! Not to mention all the attacks I'd receive from others of other nationalities who might take MY native dress as an offense to US Wests Compliance. The tricky part is understanding where the line is. Along the same line, a few months ago I was pulled aside and accused as being a racist (the first time ever in my entire life!) because I was getting extremely upset with a hispanic woman. It wasn't her genetics I was upset about, but rather the fact that she didn't know nor cared to know how to do her job even though she was screwing up my other clients (locking up a server good)! As a contractor, I didn't have to take the Compliance Training. Instead I was raked over the coals in a short speech given me by my US West Contractor Relations Specialist my first day there. >So far, I've had to learn that I'm not supposed to talk to a government investigator without checking with the Law Department first, that I'm not supposed to keep phone messages or drafts of reports for more than one year, blah blah blah blah blah... It may not crush your spirit, but it certainly numbs your brain. Maybe that's why they call it "compliance training" - when several hours of reading this stuff has put you in a trance, someone from headquarters slips into your cube and whispers in your ear, "You will NOT ask for a raise...You WANT to work long hours...You WANT to bear Sol Trujillo's love child..." Actually, I think that last one is one of those comments your not supposed to make. (Sol is the President of US West) >Of course, I haven't finished the training yet - for all I know, there's also a Policy Against Making Lightly Disparaging Remarks about the Company in Private E-mail to Friends. THAT'S IT! YOU'VE BEEN NAILED!! YOU'RE OUT!!! OUT!!!! >Oh, well - after three days there, I already have a reputation as a troublemaker, having insisted on changing my pre-assigned computer ID! That's nothing; we had a new guy in our department who labeled his new pager as a 'girlie' pager, due to it's size. That's months ago and everyone is still calling their pagers 'girly pagers' as they roll their eyes in laughter. ___________ JAMac (Dennis S.
