The Flat Cake . . . our first title suggestion!, unless I missed one earlier. (Judging from what Keith did on his website with Cracker's J-card from the last tape, this sounds promising!) To obtain the scan you require I will need to visit our local Kinko's @ $0.20 / minute. Perhaps I will accomplish this in a week or so. But first, perhaps someone else has access to a scanner (and Photoshop) at work or home, and could kindly provide Keith with what he requires. Since we're ultimately going to print this artwork I suggest the original be scanned at no less than 150dpi, and saved as a high-quality JPEG (Keith is a PC'er, I think). Thanks for urging the beast forward, Keith! Anyroadup, /\/\iles ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Jun 1998 04:50:13 -0400 From: "Stephen M. Last I heard she was going through a hard time because her close friend attempted suicide... if anyone knows her please tell her to drop us a line..? <> I actually think I know just what you mean, Mark. The ethereal 'disembodied' aspect of internet communication in general brings to mind somehow the concepts of time and space as fluid, occasionally intersecting dimensions (at least, it brings this to my mind!) I don't know an awful lot about the internet... other than it's a place which we must reach for electronically, and does not have a physical reality, but is quite 'real' in every other sense of the word. Similarly dreams, as put forth by psychologist Carl Jung, might very well exist in a different dimension from the one we know day-to-day - since he believed people were inherently 'spiritual' beings, our dreams being a link to the purely spritual - and might well provide some link between our present earthly life and that 'life' which comes afterward... I'm not explaining this very well, Jung does a much better job of it than I do, as you can imagine! But my idea is this: if dreams can supposedly represent a threshold through which we may reach a different dimension of space/time, the internet may be no different! (yes, this is what goes on in my mind when I'm not working!) Now go to sleep, children... sweet dreams :) Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Jun 1998 07:47:34 EDT From: RThurF@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: Questions about MusiCode In a message dated 6/11/98 5:55:20 AM Eastern Daylight Time, Stephen_Tilson@compuserve.com writes: << I wonder if MusiCode "audio watermarking" is in fact a ten dollar euphemism for copy protection. The honor was bestowed upon ARIS this past Saturday evening at an Awards Gala held at the EPCOT Center in Orlando, Florida. In recognition of this honor, MusiCode is featured in the July 1998 Awards Issue of DISCOVER Magazine. MusiCode embeds indelible information within music while preserving flawless audiophile sound quality. Since MusiCode becomes an integral part of the music itself, it travels with the music through any transmission media, including radio, television, cable, satellite, and the Internet, as well as physical media such as CD, DVD and cassette tape. With MusiCode, record companies, music publishers, music rights societies, recording artists, songwriters and music distributors have the means to better identify, monitor and control the use of their music. Celebrities, top scientists, and hundreds of technology lovers attended the Awards Gala. Interactive musician Thomas Dolby presented the Award to Dr. Joseph M. Winograd, ARIS Chief Technology Officer, whom accepted the honor on behalf of his company. "We are very honored for MusiCode to have been chosen for this Award," says Dr. Winograd. "There is a growing understanding that the development of new technologies for securing and maintaining the rights of the creators and producers of multimedia content is of critical importance for the success of the information economy. We are gratified that DISCOVER Magazine and the Awards judges have demonstrated that they share in this belief through their recognition of MusiCode." The annual DISCOVER Awards for Technological Innovation were started nine years ago to recognize and honor talented scientists and engineers. More than 4,000 corporate, academic, and government research centers were invited this year to nominate innovative technologies and identify the men and women behind them. Judges in the Sound Category included musicians and recording artists Ray Charles and Todd Rundgren, National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences President/CEO Mike Greene, and Billboard Magazine Editor-in-Chief Timothy White. ARIS Technologies has several groundbreaking relationships aimed at bringing the benefits of its audio watermarking systems to the music and media communities. With ARIS Technologies' watermarking systems, broadcasters and advertisers have an automated means to track the usage of their material. To this end, ARIS is deploying a national television and radio monitoring system and has joined forces with Lucent Technologies to cooperatively market ARIS's MusiCode and MediaCode(TM) audio watermarking and Lucent's MediaTrax(TM) video watermarking systems. These systems enable content owners, their rights societies, broadcasters and advertisers to verify program usage and for proof of performance. Earlier this year SESAC became the first music licensing society in the world to adopt MusiCode to accurately track the myriad of broadcast usage of their affiliates' works. And Larry Fast's SYNERGY recordings being re-released on the Chronicles label are the first publicly available recordings to employ MusiCode. MusiCode also helps convert of the Internet into a legitimate cyber- marketplace. For example, Nordic Entertainment, a pioneer in electronic music distribution via direct digital downloads, will use MusiCode watermarks to embed recipient and transaction information in songs sold via it's Downloadable Music Site, serving as a powerful deterrent to unlawful distribution and incriminating those who engage in this practice. MusiCode also gives licensed Internet monitoring organizations the means to quickly and accurately identify MusiCode encoded music being used on the web. Cambridge, Mass. based ARIS Technologies is an industry leader in watermarking technologies focusing on the varied copyright protection, royalty distribution, marketing, market research and product distribution needs of the music and media industries. Led by veterans of the music, media, and technology industries, ARIS serves these industries' needs across the entire content usage and delivery spectrum, from physical media and broadcast systems to the Internet. So while I was there I decided to pop into the "Speaker's Corner" booth and play a song. I did it a few years ago and won. "Speaker's Corner" is a video booth that's open to the public. You pop in, plunk in a loonie (canadian $1 coin) and go for 2 minutes of fame. At the end of the week they gather up 1/2 hours worth of the best bits and show them on TV (4:30 on saturdays, 7:30 on sundays). This will be the third time I've been on Speaker's Corner... I wonder if I'll win again. It's also the second time that my appearance on SC has been used in a commercial. Man... I've totally pissed away my 15 minutes of fame.
