I saw Howard Jones about 4 years ago in Park City Utah. He did an acoustical set with a percussionist. It was at a big outdoor all-day festival X96 radio did there. He was on the bill with Bush, Everclear, Catherine Wheel, and a lot of local bands. He definitely held his own despite the number of Bush fans waiting for their band. Howard got second billing, Bush was the headliner. It was an incredible show. He and Dolby would make a good double bill. The first LP I bought was the first Squeeze album, in January 1978. I couldn't afford to buy many records when I was younger, so taping off the radio was the best option. Almost twenty years to the date I was in the UK, passed by Our Price in Meadowhall & saw on promo price the first few Squeeze albums on CD, which I duly bought. However, I remember quite well the first album I bought. It was "But Seriously, Folks" by Joe Walsh, when I was about 14. I played the heck out of that thing (vinyl, of course). By a fascinating coincidence, it turns out that this was also the first album that my husband Mark ever bought, at about the same time -- some seven years before we met. And indeed, life's been good to me so far! Hey John.. It was interesting to see your first single purchased.. since I used to play that song in one of my bands in Seattle.. wow.. does that make me old or what. I remember we used to play it as a bit of a lark.. I was actually much more into "new wave" than "punk" during that time..though. My first album.. hmmm.. brings back the memories... hold on to your time machines.. I went to see my first concert... it was late spring of 1969.. I was in 9th grade.. I bought tickets for myself and a girl.. my first date.. my dad drove us downtown to the Seattle Coloseum.. (The same place the Seattle Sonics play basketball.. its now called the Key Arena.. I guess) The tickets were $4.50 each.. an astronomical figure.. and the artist was Jimi Hendrix. The seats were in the nosebleed section.. but it was so exciting to see.. Of course the only song I recognized was "Purple Haze" and he saved that for near the end.. I remember at one point Hendrix started a song.. and the guy next to me said.."Cool.. Foxy Lady" I.. being the wanna be that I was.. nodded in agreement.. But the intro to "Foxy Lady" has stuck in my mind ever since.. Later in the show the people "rushed the stage" since at that time in history festival seating wasn't yet invented. They were all sitting properly in chairs on the floor in front of the stage.. but the folks in the back wanted a better view.. so they all surged up the aisles.. the rest of the concert had everyone on their feet.. watching as Hendrix created some of the most amazing sounds come from his white Strat before smashing it up in front of them. Anyhow.. I made it home okay.. without too much razzing from dad about my first date. Then.. the next day I immediately went out and bought the album. I was hooked. I spent weeks under the spell of headphones.. letting Jimi's music take me to wondrous places.. (and I didn't do drugs.. then or now) Whew.. sorry to be so lengthy.. here.. I'll move on.. Ciao for now.. Mark ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Jun 1998 22:52:17 EDT From: CJMark@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: heretics Regarding TMDR conversions.. I managed to convert my son with the help of "Aliens" His Italian birthright, an interest in Jazz and being 16 helped him appreciate the wild approach of "Ferrari" .. which soon led to the rest of the album. He is now the proud owner of his own copy, which a friend purchased in London and brought it back for me to give him. ( He couldn't talk me out of my own copy) I actually love AAMB for many reasons.. most of which I find difficult to describe. Sometimes I think its better to just let the music wash over me like a wave.. rather than dissect the meanings.. the values.. etc. I suppose my own stunted at adolescence mind is the cause of my enjoyment of AAMB anyhow.. All that sexy talk about a car.. hmmmm.. Ciao for now.. I'll wander into some dive and discover a wild keyboardist.. backflipping offstage or some such antic.. wearing a spectacle.. sigh...if only it could happen... In fact, it was my own conversion, from my then-boyfriend, now-husband. I think the first song I heard was Airheads, and I liked it. (I'd heard Science, Pirate Twins, Hyperactive before but hadn't clued in on those by themselves, for some reason.) Nothing wrong with someone not preferring AAMB though. It's quite different from all the others. - -- Elaine Linstruth Palmdale, CA (USA) On Thu, 4 Jun 1998 CJMark@aol.com wrote: > > Regarding TMDR conversions.. > > I managed to convert my son with the help of "Aliens" His Italian > birthright, an interest in Jazz and being 16 helped him appreciate the wild > approach of "Ferrari" .. which soon led to the rest of the album.
