There's this guy who's in the market for a used motorcycle. Always wanted a nice big hog. So he's shopping around, answering ads in the newspaper, and not having much luck. One day he comes across a beautiful classic Harley with a "for sale" sign on it. Upon inspection, he is amazed to find the bike in mint condition. He inquires about it with the owner: "This bike is beautiful! I'll take it. But you gotta tell me how you keep it in such good shape. "Well," says the seller, "it's pretty simple. Just make sure that if the bike is outside and it's going to rain, rub Vaseline on the chrome. It protects it from the rain. In fact, since you're buying the bike I won't need my tube of Vaseline anymore. Here, you can have it" and he hands the buyer a tube of Vaseline. So the guy buys the bike and off he goes, a happy biker. He takes the bike over to show his girlfriend. She's ecstatic (being a Harley fan). That night, he decides to ride the bike over to his girlfriend's parents' house. It's the first time he's going to meet them and figures it will make a big impression. When the couple gets to the house, the girlfriend grabs her boyfriend's arm. "Honey," she says, "I gotta tell you something about my parents before we go in. When we eat dinner, we don't talk. In fact, the person who says anything during dinner has to do the dishes." "No problem," he says. And in they go. The boyfriend is astounded. Right smack in the middle of the living room is a huge stack of dirty dishes. In the family room, another huge stack of dishes. Piled up the stairs, dirty dishes. In fact, everywhere he looks, dirty dishes.they sit down to dinner and, sure enough, no one says a word. As dinner progresses, the boyfriend decides to take advantage of the situation. So he leans over and kisses his girlfriend. No one says a word. So he decides to reach over and fondle her breasts. He looks at her parents, but still they keep quiet. So he stands up, grabs his girlfriend, strips her naked, and they make love right on the dinner table. Still, no one says a word. "Her Mom's kinda cute", he thinks. He grabs his girlfriend's Mom and has his way with her right there on the dinner table. Again, total silence. Then, a few raindrops hit the window and the boyfriend realizes it's starting to rain. He figures he'd better take care of the motorcycle, so he pulls the Vaseline from his pocket. Suddenly the father stands up and shouts: "All right, all right! I'll do the damn dishes." - --part3_896862471_boundary-- - --part2_896862471_boundary-- - --part1_896862471_boundary-- - --part0_896862471_boundary-- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Jun 1998 08:37:24 +0000 From: Tim_Dunn@jba.co.uk Subject: Re: Alloy: Eco! Well Dave, I think if you were looking for depth and guts in Good Omens you were looking in the wrong book - it's supposed to be absurdist comedy after all. But I wholeheartedly agree that Gaiman's other work bears examination. My personal fave is the graphic-novelish Black Orchid series that he wrote for DC comics. The originality there is breathtaking, from the very first scene. I also like the fact that one of the characters in that story has the surname Sylvian, which suggests that Gaiman is a Japan or David Sylvian fan (just like me...). I noticed that Gaiman also wrote an episode of the cult TV thingamy Babylon Five that was well above average. It had a typical Gaiman theme - about the dead coming back to life for a day. I for one would have loved to see Dolby's name on the billboard alongside Culture Club, Human League, and Howard Jones as I have much respect for these artists compared to some of the music composing the Top 100 nowadays. Hopefully someday TMDR will tour again but life sometimes leads you down a different path (Whitman?) and I think Dolby's concerns now rest elsewhere. I believe it's the same artist and Neil Gaiman writes it. It's a graphic novel that's a little bit autobiographical. It has its humorouse points but its a bit of a downer over all. Still good work though. __Dave Literary critic/ will travel ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Jun 1998 18:01:50 EDT From: DThurkirk@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: Does Paul Eat Children? As much as I like HL and CC, The idea of them going on tour after all of this time seems almost like a cash grab for has beens. I know that's a bit harsh, but I'm a little bit skeptical of all of these bands that are re-uniting to perform their old hits and cash in on retro-mania. We, of course, know that Thomas has *far* more on the ball... in my mind, it would cheapen his work to associate himself in this manner. Early awaiting that tour, nonetheless, Dan. ............................................................................. It'll take me YONKS, if not longer, to build a collection of CD's to match that of my vinyl LPs, which must run to about 450. I certainly agree with you about covers. There have been some classics over the years. One of my favourites is Jethro Tull's 'Thick as a Brick' which was a 12 page spoof newspaper, 'The St Cleve Chronicle and Linwell Advertiser.' It was complete with articles about local characters, a strip cartoon, crossword, photos, sports page, etc. A hell of a lot of work went into it and it really wouldn't have worked on CD size. I also have 'The Flat Earth' and 'Aliens...' on vinyl and my chum, who introduced me to TMDR's music in the first place, has 'TGAOW' on LP as well. I've just been watching the Jo Whiley Show. She has three guests from the wonderful world of pop music each week (this week Bernard Sumner from New Order, Keith Flint from Prodigy and Jarvis Cocker from Pulp). A featurette each week is 'what was the first record you ever bought' or 'what was the first record to have made a real impression on you, the one that awoke your real interest in music.' Some of the answers can be quite surprising (Keith Flint's first purchase was 'A Message From You Rudy' by The Specials, Bernard's was 'Ride a White Swan' by T Rex). So, my little Alloy friends, what were yours? My first, and almost only single purchases were 'Marakesh Express' by Crosby, Stills and Nash, and 'Come With Me' by The Idle Race (who later became ELO). These were bought when I was about 14, as we didn't have a record player until then, my old feller swearing that he'd 'never have one in the house' until he relented and bought a second hand radiogram from a junk shop on his way home from the pub one Saturday afternoon in a mildly alcoholic stupor. I think my first LPs were second hand copies of Beatles albums. It was The Beatles who first got me really interested in music. I well remember their first live broadcasts on the BBC 'Light Programme.' I'm hard pressed to remember the first 'new' LP I bought, but it was probably 'In Search of The Lost Chord' by The Moody Blues. I imagine everyone thinks they got interested in music at just the right time, but for me the late sixties and early seventies, the era of 'Progressive Rock,' will always be the Golden Age of music for me. I'm just a sad old aging hippy, really, but I disguise it quite well.
