Hi everyone - I'm concerned that I'm not getting my Alloy mail. I haven't received any messages since Tuesday. Is there something wrong with my mail, or has everyone gone into lurk mode? The only Dolby content that I can think of is that I will be doing my best to hash out Wreck of the Fairchild this weekend on my computer. What's those lyrics again? Something about poison? Oh, and Doc Meyer - when is your scheduled arrival date? - -Keith Stansell This message powered by KUVO and a Duracraft "Commercial Grade" high velocity fan. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 May 1998 08:22:11 +0000 From: Tim_Dunn@jba.co.uk Subject: Re: Alloy: Testing testing phhhhoooo thump thump squeeel - is this thing on? Hi Keith - I think I was thinking the same thing!! I guess everyone's busy right now, or perhaps (gasp) there's NO MORE Dolby-relevant for us to write!! We've exhausted it!! Now we'll have to find something else to justify our existence - knitting, camel racing, maybe?? the_copse ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 May 1998 05:41:40 -0400 From: "Stephen M. Here is the essence of our exchange . . . /\/\ ************************************************************* Greetings Michael! Nice to hear from you. You asked a further question regarding Leipzig thusly: > Dear Stephen, > > may I ask you one more question, concerning the song "Leipzig"? > What do you think: Has the number (or year?) "thirty-nine" in the > first verse anything to do with the beginning of World War II? > > Thank you very much for your help. All the best > Michael Rauhut With the caveat that this is my opinion only, I think not. I believe the verse excerpt, "Dinner's in the microwave, sweetie.", puts the song in a solidly modern kitchen, I mean context. Good luck in your quest! But I still like Lord Stemish's interpretation best: He renames it "The Wreck of the Fairlight", and verses it as follows. We've been having lots of fun, especially when visiting some dear friends in nightmarish Tonawanda, NY. Dave and I got to walk to Canada to see the Niagara Falls while we were there, which was great... I'd never seen the falls OR been to Canada before in my life! When we have more time to spare someday I want to go back & visit the Daredevil Museum (which I assume has facts about all those guys who went over in their barrels/capsules) I did just get my bike, and I have one more question for the cyclists of Alloy. I suppose it will take a little time for me to get used to the seat which came with the bike... I hate to be a wimp about it, but it's a really hard seat - at least it feels that way to my unaccustomed nether regions - & I can see some serious bruising potential in that particular area. Which would you prefer if you were me, padded bike shorts or a squishier seat? Has anyone attended anything like this before? I'm wondering what the whole thing would be like to a computer novice. Still can't get the Beatnik plug-in to work even with Netscape. Guess I'll just have to wait for Beatnik on CD! But that's just not the same, it isn't-is it? You've raised over $3500 at this point, and I really appreciate your support!!! Earlier this week I ordered the new hardware for smoe.org, which cost $4600 (drop me a note if you're interested in the technical specs on the new gear). It arrived today, and I'm taking a few days off work to get it set up and in production. At some point between Saturday and Tuesday, smoe.org will be shut down to install the new hardware. The downtime will probably be 4-6 hours. During the time we're off-line, mail will be queued up at my ISP so no mail will be lost. I'll send out another announcement once the new gear is online. Thanks again for your help! - -Jeff P.S. If you've been meaning to send in a check, Mike Connell is still accepting donations. Contact him at ducksoup@spectra.net for more info. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 May 1998 15:43:24 -0700 From: Turquoise Dolphin Subject: Re: Alloy: is this thing on? / more bike advice? There are some nice padded seats (my favorite one has -springs-, so it works like a shock-absorber), for not too much dough. Another option is to get one of the gel-filled seat-covers from Wal-Mart, they cushion decently, but it feels a bit too much like sitting on jello for my personal tastes. ;) - - Turq. - - This message powered by Dr. Pepper ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 May 1998 17:22:55 -0400 From: "Stephen M. A number of us attended a similarly focused lecture by TMDR during October of last year in San Francisco. It was a lot of fun, *and* we got to meet with the man afterwards. Go, if you can. Who knows, maybe you'll learn a thing or two that will elevate your computer user status from novice to burgeoning acolyte! Email me privately and I'll try to walk you through the Beatnik installation process. Hell, I can't even work out where it unzips itself to, never mind make it run and I don't seem to have time to fiddle with it. It isn't helped by our multi-media PC being on it's last legs. I persuaded my boss that we need a new one, so things should improve in a few weeks. I haven't bothered to try it at home, my 'loaned' PC having no sound card, and it's internal speaker seems to have given up the ghost as well. And I was going to reciprocate with a pic of my contour hugging Lycra (TM) racing shorts, which are not for the faint hearted wearer OR observer. I'd go for a well padded but not too wide seat every time. When I have even just a couple of weeks without riding at all, I find the nethers get a little tender until I'm back in the swing, even WITH a lightly padded saddle. Anyroadup, tell us about the bike. Has it got Disraeli or Quattro Stagioni Gears? Cow horn, straight, drop (racing) or what handelbars? Are you only riding it at night until you feel confident enought to be seen on it in daylight? Have you bought a hard shell or soft helmet? Please do show off your bike threads (and those contours) Don't be shy! <> Let's see (having a look)... the bike is a GT 'Outpost Trail' all-terrain bike, with straight handlebars... extremely sturdy frame, since I was going for strength & not lightweight racing equipment, you should see the huge treads it has!... the gears are SR Powerflo with Shimano Acera X derailers. I'm just noticing that the seat says 'supersoft' on it (ha!) My helmet is a Giro Torero hard shell, white with a black & silver flame job... how safe are soft helmets exactly? I've never seen any here that I know of. And last but not least, my Trek padded leather fingerless gloves with net back. I'm going to practice riding my bike around the cemetery paths til I feel comfortable with these TekTro brakes it has, which stop on a dime & are a little startling. You can e-mail me privately with that photo of you in your cycling get-up, I PROMISE nobody else will ever see ;) Robin ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V3 #134 ***************************
