In my 8 years of servitude to my net.addiction, I've found Christmas greetings from a pop star in my mailbox, met someone who was going through the process of a sex change and got a step by step view of the events, as well as an understanding of the emotional side of things. I've come to know a former member of the Romanian national gymnastic team, an agent of the state department, Industrial strength geeks from every continent, and enough interesting people to keep my mind occupied for weeks without thinking of anything else. I know for certain I would not have been afforded this opportunity without this technology. And so to the few people on this list that I have gotten to know personally over the last couple of years, Thanks. :) One of the things that always bugged me in the past was the Baby Boomers always pestering people my age about not have a "voice of a generation" such as the Beatles. I've come to the conclusion that due to technology, that is no longer a thing that is possible. No longer can someone come along and introduce an idea that is slightly offbeat and hold a large segment of the population spellbound. Rather than following a John Lennon around like a bunch of sheep, people my age (and younger) are fragmented, gravitating toward people and ideas from a much wider pool of resources. No offense to the old farts like Slarv :) And yet as different as we become, we still found ourselves bound together with a bunch of people that we couldn't have imagined being with at an earlier point in our lives. Yes, without the internet I never would have discovered Thomas' work (Science never impressed me, and Indianapolis radio is the world's worst), or found myself in a gay bar, or drove from Washington D.C. to Boston during the February blizzard that crippled the East Coast in 96. I never would have met my two best friends, learned to two-step from a real live Texan, or fallen in lust with a canadian who was home from school in Oz for the holidays. Thanks Robin for reminding me how lucky I've been to be alive when I've been and to have happened across the people I have. :) ****** Charles E. It didn't exactly manifest that way, but it turned out well enough, eh? It was one year ago this month that I "g--g-g--g-got serious" about our sweet Europa! It was one year ago May 1st that I joined this fine group! Each of you have enriched my life in some way. Suddenly I have all these new and wonderful friends in a truly international community. Please accept my most sincere best wishes, gratitude, and feelings of friendship to each and every one. It's been great fun, let's do it again! And finally, for the TMDR tie-in (even if the focus is a bit soft), on this day in 1878 "Vaseline" was introduced to the world. Altogether, May is an auspicious month! Any help? Which one? If you're thinking of the one I'm thinking of, then it is Gary Numan from the album "Automatic," credited to "Sharpe+Numan". Used to be kinda rare, but now you can find it on a German repressing just about anywhere you care to look. As for the Chapman Stick, just go see Tony Levin and his web site. Yum! - --J - -- James E. Dave and I are hitting the road early tomorrow AM, and won't be back til late in the next week. One of the things we're off to do is attend Dave's friend's graduation party... he just got his PhD in Psychology. I'll be thinking of Beth the whole time of course (I'll find out what he thinks of the whole "Dr" issue) Oh boy... I hope the rental car has a tape deck! I MUST hear good music when we're on the road or I'll fall asleep instantly & Dave won't have anyone to talk to. The mountains we will be driving through are really spectacular. Best of all, I don't have to go to work again til the 26th, and man do I need this vacation!!! YAY!!! See you all later :) Robin ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 May 98 16:08:24 MST From: bcohen@LPL.Arizona.EDU (Barbara A Cohen) Subject: Alloy: Automatic *yes!* thanks everyone. I had said the Pointer Sisters and was beaten down. I can now reclaim my title as Lab 80's Queen! Unfortunately, now we've all got that song, and the even worse "I'm so Excited" running through our brains. Again, thanks SO much!! I have been a fan of Thomas' work for many years, and yet regardless of my given financial situation I've never been that much of a collector of anyone's stuff, so I'm sure there's lots I've never seen before. Over the years I've been attempting to develop something of a collection of Winsor McCay's artwork. I *would* collect Sir John Tenniel's work, if it were available anywhere (I have a tattoo of his 'sleeping gryphon' from Alice in Wonderland on my left shoulder) but I can't find it in any publications... Musically, I've been collecting the work of Eddie Nichols - the singer in Royal Crown Revue - his voice is absolutely incredible!! A hint... if you saw the film 'The Mask' w/Jim Carrey, they were the band which played during Mr Carrey and Cameron Diaz' insane dance number. Eddie's the big blond handsome lug with the microphone :P Michael, it's so cool that your wife is an elephant trainer! What does she train them to do? My husband says to tell her to be careful! :) I've never used ICQ, I'm not too 'computer savvy' on the whole, as you'll find out the longer you've been on this list!
