A *lot* of people asked for their money back, and I can hardly say that he came across as a Pro,.... more like a man with one hell of an Ego,...or maybe that was the drink doing the talking? This was a cover appearance as well as a feature article and I will delve back into the attic to find the issue(I think I remember where it is!). Are you familiar with ICQ online? It's a free internet messaging service that allows you to directly contact anyone in the network that is online also. It's very useful and my wife uses it all the time for elephant chats(believe it or not she's an elephant trainer here at the Norfolk,VA. zoo!). As for an exchange for the poster you don't owe me a thing-maybe you can take a picture of how you decide to display it and send it to me. Though I still will insist that everyone call me Beth, I suppose that "Dr. Beth" would not be inappropriate. At least, this means that Mark is going to stop bellowing "Hey, you! Almost a doctor!" at random intervals. Of course, as has been the case for most of this process, there were some funny little bumps in the road. One of my committee members is in Switzerland, and could not make it back for the defense. So, last Monday, I sent him the forms to sign, via FedEx overnight mail. I was hoping that he could sign them and get them back to me before the defense. Well, first of all, the package made it to his building on Wednesday but did not make it to his desk until Friday, when he was out of the office. Then, after he signed them, they somehow got into the hands of a Kenyan colleague and were on their way to Nairobi yesterday. So basically, he just authorized my advisor to sign for him, so we're fine on that count. Then, today, another one of my committee members simply failed to show up. I sent someone out to look for him and to try to call him, but he was not in his office. We still don't know what happened to him -- he was on campus earlier in the day. And he had told me earlier that the date and time were fine with him. As best we can tell, he may have just forgotten about it and gone home. In any case, if he refuses to sign the forms for some reason, he will have to argue with my advisor, who is the 800-pound gorilla of the department, so I don't expect much resistance there. Other than that, the defense went quite smoothly. It was funny -- after the requisite grilling from the committee members (those who were there, anyway), this whole long sequence of questions came from one of my friends in the lab. After about the third one, I started thinking, "Gee, Dave, do you think we might discuss these issues LATER?!?" Coming home from my hols, I've got almost a month of your musings. Like Slarv, whom I've known for almost three years now, I find a peculiar comfort in our virtual community. Like the other lurkers, the demands on my time dictate that I read more than write, that I observe more than participate. The recent testimonies about what this list offers its readers and contributors are remarkable. That we are a real global community is fantastic, and I am reminded of this when I explain the shirt ^^iles made for me to my friends in the non-virtual world. I try to imagine our parents having this opportunity to meet such a diverse cross section and I realize how fantastic the whole project is. It's wonderful to have you all.
