Our membership will now increase to 4 - Myself, JAMac, Beth, and lurker Erik Habbinga in Loveland (who was inadvertently left out in previous meetings, sorry Erik). We will definitely have to have an initiation meeting at the old Wynkoopee when you and Mark get here. If you need anything done on this end to help your move, let me know. Oh, and since you are moving to Boulder, might I suggest you pull out your best granola recipe. :p Keith - (Not even close to the sole inhabitant) Denver, CO Beth Meyer wrote: > > The answer is.... > Keith and JAMac in Denver! > Yep, Keith is becoming increasingly far from being the sole inhabitant. First of all, the Boulder job is the one I described as being more humble but allowing for a family life. Which does not at all mean that it should be boring -- they work on a lot of interesting projects there. It's just slightly less conducive to basic research as part of the job. But they are still pretty supportive of it, given the number of Ph.D.'s working there! >Well . . . we *were* a little disappointed too, ;-). /\/\iles uses a smiley face> No doubt Lord Stemish the Silent has a moue of >disappointment on his lips now too. Yay, /\/\iles! :-) Indeed, I would have loved to be nearer to you folks, but the Oracle job was not as interesting -- plus, Mark and I could actually afford a house in the Boulder area. This does mean that we'll be closer and can come visit more easily! > > > I should be starting work there on June 17, after graduating on > > June 13... > >What?!? No much deserved slack time, nervous breakdown, other episodic >behavior, or vacation? Just finish school - and MOVE? Well -- if all goes as planned (not that all has gone as planned very often in this process) it will work like this. I should defend on May 12, then turn in the dissertation (complete with changes suggested by the committee at the defense) by May 22. That finishes all my requirements for graduation. I then take a week's vacation with Mark, and spend the first couple of weeks in June preparing for the move and organizing all the stuff I'm leaving with the lab. If the object of our desire (Live Wireless, Gothic, Golden Age of Video, etc) is made unavailable to us at any price, then obviously the publishers aren't interested in our money, since THEY are unwilling to sell us the product. And it isn't a controlled substance.... though perhaps it should be in my case ;).... we have no alternative but to rely on copies, and trading with one another, if we are to ever see/hear our Mr Thomas Dolby's work. However if Thomas would like to be paid for my copy of his work I would be more than willing to send a check over, and a batch of cookies besides, because he's done so much good work he at least deserves some homemade cookies! (Hmmmm... I wonder... crunchy or chewy?) Speaking of video anarchy/anarchy in general... if I may ask, is there still a big political (or anti-political I guess I should say) movement of this kind in England? I had assumed things might be better now that Maggie's gone... but a friend tells me he thinks that many people are still revolting (politically!!!!) in England. btw I don't want to start a huge fistfight over the issue or anything, I don't think this would happen, but it seems you never know these days; just a simple yes or no would do my heart & curiosity a world of good. Nope, I haven't deleted it yet and there were definitely only two jobs in the frame on 24 April. More choice is nice, but can complicate the decision making process even further. So, what IS this job? Can you give us a little detail on your duties? Regardless, I'm pleased you've made a decision and are happy with it. I wish you every success in your new job and location. While checking my mail earlier, I could hear a debate between Labour, Conservative and Liberal democrat MPs on Newsnight. The Conservatives were, of course, attacking Labour in any way they could, while the Lib dems were mixed in their comments, some critical because the spin doctors seem to be getting more publicity in their own right than the policies and propaganda they're supposed to be pushing, but they were generally fairly positive about Labour's progress so far, bearing in mind they have a lot of work to do to undo some of the mess the Conservatives left in their wake. As to whether people are politically revolting, my feeling is they're not. They're certainly not happy that school class sizes have continued to rise in the last year, that waiting lists for operations under the National Health Service have increased rather than the opposite, and that crime is still of great concern and is apparently not yet decreasing. But today the first criminal was jailed for life in a 'two strikes and you're out' style conviction for repeated violent attacks. Some will applaud this, while others will criticise it as following in the US's footsteps. Labour's 'style' seems to be popular, and regardless of how critical some people are of the new government, most seem prefer it to the Conservative regime. I think most folk will be patient and allow Labour time to make inroads into these, and other areas, though they won't have an easy ride. Harold Wilson (a former Labour Prime Minister) is quoted as having said 'A week is a long time in politics.' but I'd say 'A year is NO time in politics.' We returned the Conservatives to power repeatedly to allow them sufficient time to make their policies work, and they failed us. The least we can do now is allow Labour ONE term to make some progress. And now, back to the studio. No, you're right, there were only two jobs shortlisted. I only included the others in the final announcement to give an idea of what the '97-98 Job Interview Tour has been like. But as it happens, the Lotus people seemed to like me but decided that that they didn't want another psychologist, the GE people hired someone local, and the Oracle people didn't want to talk about offers until I'd scheduled my defense, by which time I had found the more interesting job at US West. >So, what IS this job? Can you give us a little detail on your duties? Let's see -- I'll be working on a variety of projects, such as new phone services and Internet products and sites. I will be charged with making sure that they are usable and meet the needs of real people. This could involve going out and studying people in the field as they go about their daily business, planning and conducting lab tests where people try to figure out which button to press to get what they want, or even just given the design sketches a once over and saying "hey, feature A is wonderful, given a tweak or two, but feature B sucks" and explaining why. >Regardless, I'm pleased you've made a decision and are happy with it. It is as follows: bethmeyer@mindspring.com I don't check it all that often now, but will do so increasingly as the time left on my Georgia Tech account gets short. (Note to Paul/Jeff; Please feel free to start sending Alloy mail to the Mindspring account whenever it's convenient, sometime before June 10 or so. Thanks!)
