Has your photo appeared >yet in that publication you mentioned? Well, I'm still at my same old job so far (the writing gig, though paid, is really just pocket money on top of the fun at this stage - I could comfortably live off it if I were a diet-conscious budgie in a low rent cage...) No photo in the mag yet, I've not yet made it down to Adelaide to see my good buddy and co-conspirator so we can take the photo together. That said though, the first issue my words appear in is due out in the next day or two - I have six fingernails left and counting... > [this message powered by, wait for it, "Breathe" by Kylie Minogue] > >> > >odd that you should mention her...! Dave and I just bought Nick Cave's >"Murder Ballads" and Kylie Minogue is featured in many of the songs. Yeah, unusual combination innit? Much like one of my favourite unlikely combinations: Iggy Pop and Kate Pearson (B52's) with the track Candy. > Most of us in the US haven't heard from her musically since the > "Locomotion" thing in the '80's Yeah when all those trashy tracks came out I thought I'd be safe in saying I'd never ever be caught dead buying a CD by the woman, but when this one was released, people said it was very different and much more mature so I had a listen in a CD store and kinda liked it. The CD is called Impossible Princess. Some styles she sounds vaguely similar to here are Elastica, a combination of Smiths and Style Council (yes, at the same time!), Madonna in her Erotica phase, and even Portishead. Ob Dolby content: She'd probably even sound good doing a Dolby cover...but then who wouldn't? :-) > (though I used to see her on Neighbours > just about every day when I was in > England) It really makes me cringe that they export that. The impression it must give people of Australians... >And maybe Paul will answer a related (brief, non-TMDR question) Have you ever >been to the American west, Paul? Well I once spent a frantic 40mins at LAX getting from terminal 2 to 5 to make a connecting flight, does that count? No? Oh well, then no sorry. > Are parts of Australia anything like it? I >ask because Nick Cave's work has the feel of remote, lonely desert towns >containing people who've snapped (sounds like America to me!) but Nick is >Australian. I assume there must be similarities..? Well the closest we'd have to this is what we call the outback (central Australia.) The landscape is a little different, red earth, much flatter for the most part, but very very pretty in it's own way. I'd imagine the outback towns have a similar, um, charm as your country towns there do. Sorry I'm sounding vague here, I've lived in three states but have lived in the capital cities in each case: I've not travelled this country nearly enough. cheers, Paul. ________________________________________________________________________ Paul Baily paulb@thehub.com.au JustSomeGuy http://www.thehub.com.au/~paulb Brisbane tel: +61-7-3857-8048/+61-411-875-009 Australia Who is Lisa? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Feb 1998 14:06:58 From: leacy@it-excelsior.britax.co.uk (Neil Leacy) Subject: Alloy: A Fond Farewell Hi Folks, This is just too let every one know that as of the end of this week I'm unsubscribing from Alloy. Basically my job spec has changed to such an extent that I don't have the time to keep up with anything other than work related mail (and even that's a struggle)! For the last few months I've tended to only scan through Alloy and then get frustrated with not havin the time to write a decent reply to anything. So until I set up my home account which - with decorating and parenting - probably won't be for a while I'm going to say a fond farewell for a while. You can still send me personal mail which I will endevour to reply reasonably quickly . I will also keep up with the tape swap list as there's been some really good stuff coming through my letter box. I've really enjoyed my time with you all and you'll see me turn up again one day, I'm sure. Seriously though I wish you well - always sorry to see a familiar 'face' leave the list even though I spend most of my time lurking in the Alloy shadows (gee that sounds like a great title for a book or maybe an album hint hint - you out there TMDR). Farewell Neil and good luck for the future. I was subscribed to Alloy from two addresses; one at home, the other at the office. It's been so busy recently I've unsubscribed from the office address as I too wasn't finding enough time to read it all properly, particularly when there is a lot of activity. Fortunately `The Department' lets me have a PC at home so I can dial-in in case of emergency, so I can also pick up Alloy mail from here. If it weren't for this account I'd have had to give up on Alloy long ago. As it is I'm struggling to get into the Tap Room more than once a week. Anyroadup, hope to see you subscribing from home soon. The impression it must give people of Australians... > You think that's embarrassing...look at the popular internationally-released depictions of American life, and blush no more! One problem is (which I'm sure is true of Australia as well) the country is so huge, and there are so many different geographical settings, climates, cultures and income levels within the country, that it would really be impossible to peg it all with just one description. It's embarrassing to me that so many people around the world have thought even for one second that "Dallas" is what America is like, when it's really much more like "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" for the most part! I'm actually really happy that "X-Files" is popular in other countries now, since it shows so many different lifestyles in all the various cities and towns where the stories take place. It also shows a lot of shady governmental stuff, which I'm very proud other countries can see & think about, and possibly apply to their own situations (freedom of speech in action!) What can I see that will show me Australia as it is?
