Here's another big thanks to Stephen and everyone involved in the T-shirt. It was sitting in the post office for several days because I was extremely busy at work, so I didn't pick it up right away. And by the time I got back home from work, the post office was closed. I finally got it, and I really like it! A great piece of artwork in itself. Now I too wonder if I should wear it or save it. Hmmm...I think I'll save it for special occasions (Alloy meetings?). Anyway, The check's in the mail! Let us not neglect to send our accolades to the very patient and persevering Barbara Cohen who not only came up with the winning design, but calmly withstood the tantrums of her impatient perfectionist producer (me). There *were* a few iterations between the proposal and the wonderful final artwork. Thank you Barbara! And thank you, Phil, for acknowledging receipt of your shirt. As Slarvi might say, I'm "dead chuffed" you like it! I'll post you privately upon receipt of your check, Phil (and all). In reference to my subject line, I want to publicly announce that I've finally gotten past my petty prejudices and have come to love Aliens Ate My Buick. I listened to it again last night and realized it is *full* of those qualities I adore about TMDR's music, especially in My Brain Is Like A Sieve (that one has always been my favorite) and the Ability To Swing. And a couple of folks on the list have made me appreciate Pulp Culture in ways I never did when I first heard it. So now I do feel frustrated that it is hard to obtain, making it difficult for those who have only recently become fans to hear it. And while I'm on my "feeling bad because I've been critical of TMDR" tear, I also want to apologize for complaining about opening night of the Tap Room. Now that I've received two lovely e-Valentines (thank you, Robin and /\/\iles, my sweethearts!) I realize that Thomas' allowing us to be the first ones to have access to such a special service was Big News indeed. I've seen two copies of Aliens Ate My Buick here is San Francisco-- imports, of course, at $20.99. If there's anyone who hasn't secured a copy, and is not scared away by the sticker price + tax + shipping, let me know. :) BC - --- Brian Clayton | This block is | stemish@kumr.lns.com | not valid postage | ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Feb 1998 20:42:25 EST From: RThurF@aol.com Subject: Alloy: Neil is a GOD part II NEIL!!!!!! Thank you!! I got my Sherbet Fountains in the mail today; I'm even eating one of them now. The licorice is so fresh - at the import shop here in Cambridge, the licorice was usually quite brittle & hard to manage. They're even BETTER than I remember. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for being so dedicated to my cause :) Now, let's talk deal. What can I do for you now you've done this wonderful thing for me? You may be in need of... a handmade teddy bear in the fabric of your choice? or perhaps some of Robin's delectably fresh, sans-walnuts, homemade chocolate chip cookies? Let me know what you might like, bearing in mind that I'm fairly useful in the creativity department. love, Robin :) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Feb 1998 21:02:07 -0500 From: Melissa Jordan Subject: Alloy: In case you hadn't heard... Hi, folks; Melissa noted: > Very sadly, Falco died in a car accident in the Dominican Republic on > February 7. Indeed, a sad note. I always thought that Falco was a little under- appreciated. I particularly resented the fact that this group "After the Fire" took his song "Der Kommissar," contributed nothing other than roughly translating the lyrics into English and performing it in much the same way he did, and had a big hit with it. From what I can tell, Falco was part of a really vibrant period of German-language music in the 80's. There was all sorts of really original, unique stuff coming out of Germany and Austria at that time; you may also remember Nena ("Neunundneunzig Luftballons") and Peter Schilling. When I worked for Siemens one summer, a friend of mine had a great CD called "Neue Deutsche Welt" (I think that was it), with all sorts of great German-language music from the period. He complained that now, in Germany, all you hear are either American and British bands or bands trying to sound just like them. And that certainly seems to be the case from what I saw of Euro-MTV in Slovenia. So I think poor Falco deserves a bit more respect than he gets. Not too long ago, early on a Saturday morning, I heard a disc jockey saying something like this: "So, you know what that last artist has in common with Nena and Falco? That's right, they're all German!" At which point I yelled at the radio, "Falco is AUSTRIAN, you dipsnort!" (Unless he was lying in "Rock me Amadeus.") But then, maybe I should lay off the caffeine.... OK, sorry for the long off-topic digression. Here is a more Dolby- related note: when I was surfing some music news sites, looking for more details on what happened to Falco, I discovered that Riuchi Sakamoto has a new album out with contributions from lots of other distinguished musicians. You may recognize him as a former TMDR collaborator. As you all know, this Saturday is my 10th wedding anniversary, so I made a couple of T-shirts to honour the occaision. The first is a T-shirt I made for my wife: I've been married for 10 years and all I got was this lousy T-shirt... __________________ | | | recent family | | photo | | | ------------------ ... two beautiful children, and a husband who thinks I'm a goddess. The second one is one I made for myself. I have a gig that night and my wife can't attend it so I made a T-shirt to wear to the gig to let everyone know what a special night it is for me. It says on the top "Accordionists Marry Models" and then has a picture of my wife (taken from the days when she used to be a fashion model) surounded with stars and on the bottom it reads "10 years of wedded bliss. Feb. 14th 1998." I love having a colour printer! And in other news, I got a complete set of Sailor Moon figures from the Dollar Store to go with my Ame-chan doll.
