Well, there was that shareware software that Keith used for the party at his web site. I don't recall every detail of the interface, but I know that you didn't have to keep reloading the page. You just typed in one blank and saw the whole conversation in another. HOWEVER, said software quite arbitrarily wouldn't let Robin into the conversation, so I don't know if I'd recommend it. (Aside from the fact that I CAN'T recommend it because I don't remember the name!) So does anyone know if that is how the Saturday night "chat" is going to work? Presumably Thomas will start a thread at 7:30, it will have a title that will indicate to us that it's from him, and then we can all start posting replies? Just curious -- I don't want to miss it because I'm off looking frantically in some wrong thread... So today I was driving south, listening to KFOG's "10 at 10" show, in which they play ten songs from one year, and heard that today's year was 1984. I thought "Hmmm, The Flat Earth came out in 1984....nah! They won't!" But just then, as I passed beneath 92, lo and behold, I heard the crash of percussion, and those famous words... It's a freebie Java program that you embed links to in your web page. The party room is still there if any one wants to check it out: http://www.concentric.net/~kasman/chat.shtml I got mail recently that said they upgraded the software, who knows, it may even work for Robin now. Hope most of the Alloyance can make it there Saturday! -- E(lipse ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Jan 98 14:26:00 +1000 From: Paul Baily Subject: Alloy: Tap Room clarifications Hi y'all, First off, apologies if this message sounds a little fuzzier than usual, I'm nursing the mother of all hangovers right now (hey gimme a break, it's been a rough week! :-) Okay, let me try to clear up a few things with the Tap Room. * The Beatnik plug-in is NOT required to use the Tap Room - you'll be fine going in there with pretty much any reasonably current Web Browser. The only reason I suggested having it loaded is that we'll be announcing a new product that uses Beatnik so if you felt so inclined you'd be able to scoot on over and try it out straight away. Here's a bit of a teaser for you, one of the new tracks you'll be able to hear is a snippet Thomas has done from Valley of The Minds Eye! * YES, Thomas will be there at 7:30pm and YES you'll be able to talk with him live. (Yay!:) Curtis has gone to great lengths to ensure that this Tap Room behaves very similarly to the original version which seemed to work well with usual day to day conversation as well as special events such as the Tommy Awards * The thread we'll use for the occasion is "Tap Room Official Opening Night" * The only thing you need to do to stay up with the conversations as they happen is to hit the reload button on your browser every 30 secs or so - however often you want depending on the speed of your link to the site. I know that sounds like a bit of a hassle but again, it means even the most basic browsers out there should be able to cope. * Apart from keeping it close to the original, the reason we went for the threaded message approach is that because we're all spread throughout different timezones, actual realtime chat could be difficult getting people together for on a frequent basis. With this layout you'll be able to see the transcript and add to it as often as you like without having to hang around for responses. * Although the official opening time is 7:30pm Saturday california time, the Tap Room is live right now so you're more than welcome to start using it immediately, in fact it may be an idea to have a look around before that time (geez I wish these keys would stop moving around!) so you're ready when TheMan arrives. Finally, if you're having trouble figuring out what the time will be in your local timezone, this web page may help (I don't know whether it's 100% accurate so check with another source too): Hope that helps clear up a few things, but if not, please do get in touch either by email or phone. cheers, Paul. Domestic orders= = were sent USPS "Priority Mail, insured", and foreign orders were sent USP= S = "International Parcel Post Air, insured." Each parcel contains your shirt(s), and an invoice. The invoice details = your shirt total (I lazily omitted information "per shirt" for those of y= ou = with multiple shirt orders), the shipping cost, and the Order Total. Shi= rt = cost is as per the projected prices found in the ALLOY T-Shirt Order = Form. Please pay your invoice in US dollars, or in the case of = international orders, pay in your currency of choice at the current excha= nge = rate --- adding the equivalent of $5.00 US to cover exchange fees on my e= nd. Shipping for US orders ranged from $3.75 to $5.75. The international orders were somewhat more expensive to ship. I selecte= d = what I believe is the least costly method which met the two following = criteria: Criterium one was to have the package insured against loss or = damage, and number two was to not make you wait 5 to 7 weeks for your shi= rt. = The downside, as I mentioned, is the cost which ranged from $7.75 (Canada= ) to = $18.56 (Montrose, Australia). Realizing that orders overseas may have duties imposed on them, I dealt w= ith = that issue in the following manner: Only the value of the shirt was = declared, and it was claimed as a gift. I hope this was the correct thin= g = to do. Herewith my permission to bitch me out as required. As an acknowledgement to the folks who were instrumental in the shirt's = creation; Thomas, Paul, Barbara, and myself have each been given one shir= t = whose costs have been covered by the group. I hope you each enjoy your shirts as much as I do mine. I wore it for th= e = first time today, and it already feels like home.
